Very VERY tightly wound up to start. Salinity coming to play at first, then white raisins, then after an hour, soy sauce. What a FUN wine that is blowing up mid palate with fruit and minerality. @ Gramercy Tavern

A surlier less exciting bottle than a few months ago. This was more angular, tart and showing a touch more alcohol. It wasn’t flawed and had impressive density but clearly not as good a bottle as the previous one.

Vatan Vertical (TDS): Forward and bright nose with orchard fruit and lemon-lime accents. Similar to the '05, this is heavier and richer in the mouth, though there is more acid here compared to the '05 but not as much as the '04. Good mineral and freshness in the finish.

Vatan-a-thon at TDS (Chicago, IL): Good stuff. I think I liked this better than Adrian and Rich (but didn't notice the slight oxidation Adrian noted). Pretty, bright citrus fruit with light minty and faintly honeyed accents, rounder on the palate and showing a touch of botrytis, but still has enough acidity to keep it nicely focused and balanced.

Vatan (2002 rouge, 2004-12) (Chicago, IL): A bit of a laggard tonight, though we weren't 100% certain that that wasn't due to the provenance of this bottle. That said, this didn't have any discernible flaws either. There's quite a bit of botrytis and a slight touch of oxidative character here. It's also a ripe wine, but pales in comparison to the 2005 in that respect. As well, it's lacking some of the drive that I want.

Incredibly youthful, like, is this really 9 years old? Can't be. Full-bodied, not crunchy at all but certainly snappy, with a serious core and serious length. Green apple, citrus flower, stones; really rather reticent and in need of time (?!).

Olea (New Haven, CT): Still very youthful, but a great showing. Intense stony, chalky, spearmint, and other herbal elements on the nose, and ripe herb-tinged grapefruit on the palate over a base of pure stone, all conveyed with the focus and lightness I usually expect from Vatan's wines. With more air the mineral and stony elements become even more prominent. Fantastic, but I imagine this will only get better with time.

Medium yellow. Very reticent-with vigorous swirling, finally some light herbs and faint citrus. In other words, not one of those intensely varietal Sauvignon noses where you could not mistake it for anything else. Similarly, surprising texture, almost oily with lots of earth. I could have sworn I was drinking a Savennieres rather than a Sancerre. Seemed rather low in acidity for the first hour or so before this too perked up, and some of the unique quinine I associate with Vatan also began to come through. I think I rudely awakened this wine from a deep sleep before it was ready to shake out the cobwebs. I have never encountered a Sancerre of this age in a similar state of being so closed, and I look forward to trying the recorked remnants tomorrow evening.
And on the second night, it turned into Sancerre-lighter, brighter orange peel, significant acidity. Quite amazing, actually. When the fog lifted, I could only conclude that the only flaw here was my judgment in opening too soon.

Clear with medium yellow lemon color, Nose medium intensity, dominated by lemony citrus, floral perfume, and minerals. Palate was dry, medium high acid, huge concentration with a medium body and very nice long finish. Required a good hour air time to open.. One of the best Sancerres I have ever tasted

First one we've opened in a few years, this is aging very nicely. Seems to have filled out on the palate but retains the weightless intensity that this wine usually displays. Mint, lime, mineral flavors are all present and the balance is impeccable. I've said it before, I used to compare this to F Cotat but I think I had it backwards. My discrete CT scale: 95-extraordinary; 90-very good; 85-good; 80-fair; 75-poor

I had this 17 months ago and it was a completely unimpressive bottle. This bottle, however, is completely impressive, a true beauty. Transports you to a fresh growing herb garden, especially with lovely mint leaf. Lime and lemon fruit are beneath, with slight touches of riper tree fruit. Flavors echo these and are on an intense substrate of minerals - not so much a big, round mineral effect as an infused spring water layer. Texturally it gives that great sense of having a lot of body and extract but being levitated across the tongue. Marvelous balance and length too.

Great stuff. Classic Vatan aromatics of mint, herbs and chalk leading into a palate full of incredibly fresh citrus and pear fruit over a mineral base. There's a sense of remarkable purity and finesse to the flavours, superb length and it's a wonderful combination with Crottin de Chavignol.

Light yellow. Lime and herbs. Densely packed, and the acidity and minerality really pick up with air. Wonderful feel with an unusual floral end note. My partner in crime said it reminded him of Loire Chenin rather than Sauvignon. I can see that but thought it was great if quite unique in the quality of its fruit.

Top-line: this was outstanding. But it was the tale of two wines. The wine tasted just after opening which was steely, almost austere, with stunning cut and chalky minerality. And the wine, an hour later, that was dense with sweet orchard fruit and fresh herbs. Amazing in both in both selves.

Extremely pale, just one shade darker than distilled water. Starts with wet stone on the nose and anise/lavender on the palate, then gives nothing more. Absurdly young and far too early to rate. Could be one that doesn't show its stuff until age 15-20-- not unusual for Vatan. Forget it in the cellar for a good while.

Opens fresh and young, with a typical Sauvignon Blanc profile, but not much Vatan. Opened up quite a bit after an hour in the decanter. I don't think this is the best time to be checking in, but, still, wow, lovely stuff with gorgeous minerality.

Notes on this sound like this could be a play on Capital One: "What's in Your bottle?" In mine, very light bodied spring water, feels like there ought to be a water lily floating in there. It's refreshing, but it would be more so if it were lightly carbonated and cost about $40 less.
We shall see eventually. I have four more, but right now that honestly just makes me feel pretty foolish.

One of the best expressions of Sauvignon Blanc I can recall. Threshed grass and river stones, and pure, precise fruit that, with a little bottle age, has developed some density. Even if it weren't for the apparently large number of off bottles, I'd drink now.

WineFanatic Loire Offline (Vancouver, BC): Tasted blind – pale lemon in colour. Light notes of citrus fruits on the nose with oxidative aromas as well. There was also a distinct chemical note on the nose that didn’t seem to blow off. Decent acidity with a lighter body. Interesting more so than delicious. Not sure whether this was representative (in which case my score is far too generous) or a flawed bottle (in which case I shouldn't be rating the wine based on this bottle). Very delicate and almost interesting finish, but lacks anything approaching concentration or fruit. More like a mineral water with some interesting complexity, but marred by obvious alcohol flavors (a hint of heat, but also an alcohol-ey flavor)....

I must be one lucky son of a gun -- all comments on this wine are talking about corked bottles and underperforming behavior -- YET, I had a lovely bottle: Nose was stony with citrus and a honeysuckle element I think. The palate is bright, with an early buttery aspect then transitions into a minerally, fruity mode with soft acid and the balance was excellent across the entire taste. Very pleasurable with some fresh striped bass caught neaby.

This time It was a bad experince. The wine was inficiated by ethilc alcol sensation both in the nose than on the palate. It was very hard to drink more than one drop. I hope I bumped into a underperforming bottle. If I have to assign a rating I'd give less then 70....

well, this is a very confounding wine. this case has had its share of corkers and this bottle was oxidized. had lots of honey and honeysuckle, but there was no edge, which I know ought to exist. just a lot of flabby parameters with quickly aging flavors. pity and disappointing.

Light color, straw yellow rim. The nose is less aromatically intense than your typical SB... strongly mineral driven with stony chalk, some light citrus notes, minimal methoxypyrazines/thiols, no new oak influence, no botrytis/diacetyls. On the palate dry with medium acidity (lacks the typical cat's claw acidity of SB), quite a bit of flesh and weight on the midpalate, minimal phenolics, no creaminess, low alcohol. Balanced wine... low to moderate length, average intensity, low complexity. Finesseful wine, fine texture, certainly not screaming either SB or Loire to me. Wine didn't do anything overnight and really wasn't that impressive... you can almost hear the overranted chant coming from the glass! Average wine, poor qpr... I can hear the terroir-ists..."but the purity of the wine's terroir is shining through," the presence of terroir is but one element of quality IMO.

Somewhere between a Sancerre and a Chablis. After ~4 hours in the decanter, the sea shells really come through intermingled with the grassy notes of Sancerre. Feels like tons of extract on the palate which makes the finish almost painful. Should be superb in a decade.

Interesting wine, mainly in the good sense of the word. It's soft and full, and the fruit impression to me is the fully ripe, white part of a honeydew melon. Not a lot of acidity, but the balance seems right, and there is no heat, even with the roundness. It finishes long and dry, with a taste of lees or malt that lingers. Better with a slight chill. Not sure how long I would hold this, but I guess it depends what you want from your bottle of Chavignol.

Somewhere there is an alternative universe where streams and rivers flow with wine, and in that universe the streamwater probably tastes a lot like this. Almost Savoyarde in its purity and welterweight impact, the alcohol is utterly invisible and the fruit only mildly more assertive than mineral water but twice as cleansing, finishing with a long but subtle evocation of fresh spring greenery.

Stunningly good. Full, but not too big, Grand Cru white Burgundy mouthfeel but, obviously, a very different fruit profile -- what stayed with me is the (fully ripe) green finish with mint and some grass-i-ness.

Drinkable but tired and too advanced. I would suspect heat damage but one bottle out of three drunk so far was fastastic. Is premox arriving in the Loire? I hope not.

Some way off the previous bottle. Still lovely, but under expectation.

this is such a spectacular wine. not in the literal sense, since it is lacy though sharply defined but nothing over the top or boisterous. the finish where the action is - all flowers and honey. pretty darn good stuff.

Brilliant. Fantastic crisp green apple fruit with great acidity and a long, long, evolving finish. More giving than the 05 Cotats at this stage but will obviously age really well.

Stunningly good. Full, but not too big, Grand Cru white Burgundy mouthfeel but, obviously, a very different fruit profile -- what stayed with me is the (fully ripe) green finish with mint and some grass-i-ness.
