Probably the pinnacle of what village wine could be. While I’m still not sold on 2005 being the best vintage of the last 50 years, this was certainly a strong showing. Chambolle strawberries, no tannins but still a nice mid weight length, this was a very solid wine.

Sometimes you open the right wine at the right moment. Tonight I opened my last bottle of this Chambolle, and was blown away. Gentle red fruit, clean, loamy earth, subtle herbs, worn leather - all the things I look for in a bottle of Burgundy with some age. It still shows a notable structure, but that just keeps it together, framing a beautiful picture of a well tended garden in the fading summer light. Sigh.

Interesting to check in in a Fourrier; a lovely village wine for its release price, a poor wine for it’s perceived value these days. Exactly as it says on the label Chambolle Villages. Beautiful nose though....

This is a high class village , it’s all there to get above 90 except for a certain dilution that is the life of a village, the velvet is there but diluted , all the tempting characteristics of Fourrier tempting u to upgrade , very good.

Continuing with my 2005 Burgundy check in, this is beautiful right now. It still shows bright cherry fruit, and has a captivating spicy overtone of cinnamon and nutmeg. Smooth on the palate, it adds a mid-palate richness that belies a relatively lightweight entry. It's a touch short on the finish, but the level of deliciousness makes that a small complaint. Drink now if you want to, but no fear in holding for a few more years.

Medium-red color; no bricking. Great Chambolle nose -- very expressive and multi-dimensional. Excellent balance on the palate, though finish hits a bit of a rough patch. Mouthfeel a bit lacking too -- on the thin side; otherwise a very pleasing village Chambolle showing the Fourrier house style. Now - many years (10+?) for this....

Mixed Bag... (Roberts House, Philadelphia PA): Clear medium ruby color with legs on glass. Developing nose shows reductive quality with raspberry syrup, pine, earth, and clove -- nose feels overy advanced. Dry palate is a fresh surprise, with med acid, med - tannin, medium - body, and medium intensity flavors of raspberry juice, boysenberry, cinnamon, and pine. Medium finish is fresh, but also brings back pine character. Good quality. Ready to drink, advancement on nose is a concern, but should hold for 5-10 years.

Medium ruby-purple. Slight stench on the nose. Notes of raspberry, grass, red cherry. Very high acidity here, and tannic, but it all comes together rather nicely. Starting its drinking window now.

Nice bright colour and an immediately appealing nose of fresh berry fruit, something creamy and something spicy; undertones of liqourice. Clean attack, fills the mouth with lovely sweet fruit; very more-ish. More complexity with a bit or aeration, but a little lacking in definition and short on the finish. Still very nice though, and really beginning to sing at present.

Pinot Noir: Burgundy vs. New World (Our House (2033 Brandywine St., Philadelphia)): This is nice but not exceptional. Mint, menthol, tree bark and tobacco on nose. Some raspberry and minerals. Shade bitter on the palate with the raspberry and forward minerality. A nice finish, maybe a shade watery. Fine offering but nothing to write home about.

Not until a few hours of air is this a noticeable upgrade over the 2004. It's got a pretty, sweet scent (molasses on the note below sums it up very well - thanks) but this is quite simply not a wine of finesse. With its coarse, abrupt tannin, it doesn't have either the silk or the sap to make this a seductive wine. The fruit does build in intensity over time, helping to overcome the roughness of the tannin, but instead of becoming more elegant it just becomes juicy and Beaujolais-like. Another one of those reminders that no matter how cultified a producer gets, a village wine is still a village wine.

Blind Pinot Noir Tasting (Roberts House): menthol, mint, tobacco. lacking in fruit, despite having nice secondary qualities. surprised by this.
