(Mostly) Barolo night (Frank's place in Matraville): From Coravin. Aromas of tomato and tomato leaf, savoury spice, pot pourri, leather, earthy, slight forest floor and meaty notes, with time and agitation some pretty black hued fruits (including plum and cherry) starts to show with a creamy backing and a hint of tobacco leaf. Medium plus intensity acidity, meaty and savoury, tannins encroach almost immediately, the fruit shouldered aside by this gritty bully backed by alcohol warmth.

Agree with others here - this is turning a corner toward the end of middle age... a bit of bricking in the glass, but a lot of power remains. Big nose, big palate. Austere and serious. A wine suited for a deliberate, paced evening. 50/4/13/16/8

2004 low/mid range Piedmont is like the avocado of the wine world - not ready, not ready, not ready, not ready…NOW!!! Well, this particular wine was ready, though perhaps slightly on the end of its secondary phase, starting to gain tertiary notes. The hue scared me a bit, as it is quite bricked overall, but it is quite lovely. Still some of that amazing 2004 floral and tar component on the nose, the palate is very dusty, but still has an energetic mouthfeel with good acidity. The fruit is where it shows its secondary/early tertiary characteristics, however, in starting to dry out and perhaps prune a bit. Wonderful with rich foods, I’d consume these in the near future. I have wanted to check in on my 2004s and this one definitely is ready.

Opened, but did not decant, 1 hour before dinner. Better with food than without. Preferred an '09 Chateau Poujeaux (Right Bank Bordeaux) to this. Medium red/brown color. Leather, dried/sweet cherry and touch of burnt wood. Medium body, medium+ acidity, integrated tannins - on palate, stewed fruit, sweet cherry and leather. At end of line for my palate. 91+/-

I bought this wine on my first ever trip to Barolo in 2011. I had just come from an amazing tasting at Roberto Voerzio and stumbled into a small shop in La Morra. Tonight this this wine, while not as stellar as I remember it on that night in La Morra, continues to bring all of the things that I love about traditional Nebbiolo....tar, red flowers, leather, spice, sweet cherry fruit and elegant purity.

Consistent with previous note about 5 years ago but a bit more developed than I expected. With that being said I would put it right between early maturity and estimated peak. Lovely sour fruit, dried roses, rosehip, old leather. A nice sweet tone to the fruit on the nose. Elegant and refined. Sandy, fine caliber tannins with some roundness to them. Good lively acidity. In a very good spot right now, just as some of recent notes suggest here at ct. Not highly complex or deep but a wonderful expression of elegant, traditional Barolo.

Last bottle from 2/2016. Opened, but did not decant, for 1.5 hours and paired with grilled lamb chops.
Brownish red color with a clear rim. On nose, beautiful - sour cherry, tart cherry, sweet tobacco, baking spice and red currants. On palate, full body, high acidity, integrated tannins and long finish. Impeccable balance - while at peak, hopefully will stay for a few more years. Best bottle of the 5 that I have.

Wonderful stuff that is just beginning to show the secondary aromas of a maturing wine. Acidity and astringency in great harmony with perhaps some further softening of tannins yet to come with further age. Classic smells and tastes with additional flavors of pine tree/Christmas tree that could be perceived as rosemary and sage. A wonderful food wine - wish I had more.

Just a perfectly typical mature Barolo. Strawberries tar anise on the nose. Still very dark with no bricking at all. Like velvet in the mouth and finishes very long and totally smooth. Tar cherries and hot rocks in the mouth. Really lovely.

The aromatics are lovely with florals, cherries, and anise. The palate is more subdued with cherries, florals, and tannins that clamp down, but leaves a lingering aftertaste.

Dinner at Ceres' Table (Ceres' Table, Chicago IL): Nose: The nose is nuanced and perfumed with red cherries, tar, roses, strawberries, earth tones, licorice, and roasted herbs. There is good depth with a hi-toned nature to the nose.
Taste: Medium bodied with high acidity and high tannins. The structure is still youthful with the tannins having a taught quality to them. The feel is feminine and nuanced with red cherries, tar, roses, strawberries, licorice, and roasted herbs.
Overall: This is a pretty and understated Barolo. It still feels a bit young as the tannins and acidity still have youth to them. It could still use another 3+ years to really show itself.

Opened both bottles I have. Both taste quite tired. Not flawed, just over the hill which is unexpected for its age. Brick dust, dried cherry, tar, integrated tannins but nothing fresh & lacking the complexity an aged wine can bring. If I were to score it it would be mid-80s but I'm sure there are bottles out there showing better given the average scores here.

a little muted when first poured, but it soon sprang into life. very smooth, lovely depth, really wonderful colours. I think this wine will live a very long time indeed and can see this shining in 10-15 more years from now.

Garnet to red. Very little sediment. Really nice aromas of truffles, cherries, plums, summer flowers. Very nice subtle complexity. Flavors of cherry and red berries, tar, mild black tea, spices. Very smooth on entry , then it firms up as you hit the mid-palate. Medium length finish. Some spices and minerality on the mid to end.Tannins hit on the back end ... not bitter, more sweet. Still a bit grainy. Nice acidity. A pleasure to drink.

Decanted about 2 hours before dinner. Some apparent tannins, but they're more supple than gritty. Red and black cherries, lots of floral/rose notes, a little tar, a little olive. Good length, needs time but pretty good with steak now. B+/A-

Mature cherries, strawberries, rosehip, rose petals and undergrowth. Stunning nose with hints of early maturity. Powerful palate with a young and powerful tanninstructure. This is without a doubt a very traditional Barolo and very true to it’s origin, and vintage. Approachable, and brilliant with food, but won’t show at it’s best for another ten years or so. Potential.

Decanted for 1.5 hours before dinner (grilled NY Strips). Medium red color with some sediment. Some gradation in color from rim to center. Beautiful nose. Dark cherry, menthol, sour cherry, rose petal. On palate, high acidity, full body and long finish. Tart cherry / dark cherry / touch of dirt flavor profile. Very nice. 92+
Unlike my note from 8/2010 (not unsurprisingly), this wines nose was beautiful upon opening.

Gorgeous aromatics. The palate has red fruit, florals, dried fruit, and tar in spades - tannins also but this is young and fabulous. Doesn't hurt to have it with leftover carbonara pizza with white truffles. Damn...I only had 1 bottle.

The nose was slightly more mature than I would expect, but no complaints here. It showed classic Nebbiolo notes of tart cherry, mushroom and undergrowth, hints of cedar, floral rose and beautiful depth, which pulls you in. On the palate, it was still youthful with more acid and tannin than fruit, yet still brimming with notes of black cherry, tobacco, alpine herbs and inner floral notes that permeated the senses. The finish was structured with mouth puckering tannin that's just starting to recede. I can imagine that five more years will reveal a totally gorgeous wine.

Decanted for 3+ hours and enjoyed wtih Spaghetti. Similar flavor profile to my 8/2010 note (Tar / rose petals / dark cherry (but no rubbber) on the nose & sour cherry / tobacco on the palate. Surprisingly closed and tannic. Pretty soft red fruits and tar on the nose but just a wall of tannin and very drying on the palate. Compared to the 04 Brunate drunk 2-3 years ago, this has gone from effusive and wide open to hard as nails. Check back in 10+ years.
I knew this was probably going to be too young and I was right. This wine is fast asleep and not really ready for business. Tannins are firm but not completely dominant and you can see this has good structure. Medium bodied, nice bright strawberry / raspberry hue and on the feminine side of elegance. Not as good as a previous sample but it will improve if the fruit can shine.

Still a bit hot after 2 hours decanting. Cherries, licorice, vegetables, and earth on the nose. Nice balance with super grippy tannins on the finish. Not a lot of fruit, but what's here is cherry, and some licorice (yes, like the nose).... Maybe some chocolate/cocoa going on too. I'm thinking this needs more bottle time.

A beautiful wine - the nose shows the sweet anise, violets, rose petals, and sweet fruits that the '04's are happily known for. Bright and fresh overall. Sampling 2004 Barolo, Part 1: Complex nose of sweet red and black fruits, rose petal, light licorice, soft saddle leather. Ripe but lovely. Tastes of gorgeous soft, ripe red fruits, leather, rose petal, really broad and palate saturating. Great length with grippy, somewhat rustic tannins. Absolutely tops, but this bottle had brett levels that were over most present tasters' thresholds, which gives some cause for concern down the road.
