2018 Capanna Brunello di Montalcino

  • Capanna Brunello Masterclass, Gordon's, Waltham, Mass.: 14.5% alcohol. Aged for 42 months in large, neutral Slavonian oak barrels. This is a big step up from the Rosso (in price and quality). More extract, more intensity, more definition. It is also very tannic, but the tannin levels seem more balanced here. Should be good to drink in about 5 years.

  • Had the Capanna BdM as part of the myths and unicorn tasting at Vineria Aperta Montalcino in Castelnuovo dell’Abate. Don’t judge this wine bar by its cover! Staff are super knowledgeable, and their selection is amazing. This wine made in a traditional style was incredible and our pick of the tasting. It smells like dark cherries, blackberries, and plums, with a little bit of leather, tobacco, chocolate, oak, and spices. When you taste it, it's full-bodied with firm tannins and lively acidity that make a perfect mix for the complex flavors of fruit, herbs, and dark luscious undertones. The finish is long and satisfying, making you want more. I would highly recommend to anyone who is interested in trying a classic style of BdM. Perhaps this isn’t the most “myth” or “unicorn” of our tasting as it is neither difficult to purchase nor exceedingly unaffordable, but thankfully it was excellent. Quintessentially BdM and if I had to choose a word to describe it, it would be either mouthwatering or satisfying.

  • Tasted at Benvenuto Brunello NYC. Medium garnet color, Nose is fragrant with red florals and red berries and a hint of minerals. Palate is some spice in addition to the cherry and mineral elements. Medium(+) tannin and acidity. Nice texture and depth. Finish is long but has a slight bitter edge to it. Needs tine in the cellar and aeration. Should be long lived.
