amazing value, this is what every Bandol fanatic looks for, some barnyard and animal scents blow off quickly and reveal flowers, tree sap and ripe red berries, the palate is round and thorough, the acids back this up well, there is a mouthful of berries, clove, leather, earth and rhubarb, drinking very well now, was great with Italian sausage

In between stage, some fine mourvedre funk with old leather and cinnamon (brett?) with some darker red fruit. Nice enough, scratches that Bandol itch. Still some drying tannin. Could age some more.

(14.5%) Mostly (75%+) Mourvedre, Grenache and a little Cinsault – This one is made from very low yields and is inky in color but showing brick red on the edges. Floral and herbs on a meaty nose with thin dark fruit (black cherry) notes. Earthy & leathery on the palate with dry black currant flavors on a big, rocky mineral structure. This leads to a pleasant, short peppery finish that elicits coffee notes and while it doesn’t linger it lasts on the tongue for some time. Still good but I think I missed it by a year or two as I’d prefer just a bit more fruit. Drink’em if you got’em…

Wines with dinner (Prager, Dauvissat, Bandol) (Chicago): A nose of wild blackberry fruit supporting leathery, meaty notes. The palate is medium in weight, delightfully fresh and pure, with perfect integration of fruit and acid, but a huge wall of tannins hits on the back end. When they mellow, even if they impart a somewhat rustic character, this is going to be a very classy wine.

Served with a vegetarian "cassoulet." Decanted for 2hrs then poured back in the bottle and left open till served a couple of hours later. A fantastic aroma. Medium bodied with great depth on the palate. Of course, incredibly tannic. Worth waiting 5-10 more years.

Dark broody Mourvedra, that's what you're looking for. I prefer the 2001 to previous vintages because of my perception of balance in this wine. I've tasted it at least 7 times with a similar impression each time. Lush, sweet, young, exciting Bandol. Peppery, spicey and round. Tasted August, 2005.

Dirty nose of yeast, hay and red currant, red fruit and a overwhelming menthol followed by a medium body, a little diluted on the mid-palate, medium, spicy finish

Served with grilled doves wrapped in bacon and grilled venison tenderloin, this gutsy, meaty Bandol was a near perfect match. In line with previous impressions (see TNs), this $15.20 overachiever strikes again. Full bodied, with grilled meat, garrigue, brambly black fruit, and tar. Quite rustic / wild. What a value Bastide Blanche's basic cuvee is in 2001.

The nose was very closed when first opened. Ripe cherries were all that were apparent. However, within 10 minutes, hints of licorice and oak appeared. After hours in the decanter pepper and mineral notes came to the surface. In the mouth the wine is peppery, with bold fruit and plenty of oak. Hints of chocolate and coffee are secondary as it opens up over time. Good acidity and tannins linger in a very long, peppery finish.

$15.20 retail, after discount. No formal note (see previous TN). Again, this is the real deal and, IMO, over delivers at $15. Right now I prefer this over the slightly more expensive '01 Estagnol bottling from Bastide Blanche (see TN), though I can't say what might be the case in, say, ten years...

$15.20 retail, after discount. No formal note. This is a great value, IMO. Deep, dark fruit, with an underlying meatiness; moderately tannic, though the framework is filled in nicely by the fruit.

In a really good place right now - great balance, mouthfeel, depth...If I were to complain, I'd say it was too round.
