Dark red with a touch of black. Blackberry, pepper, grilled beef on the nose. Cola, black pepper, tea, oak, with a hint of leather and a dark fruit and oaken finish. Still young at heart. Hadn’t had this in a while, holding up really well. More savory than the Booker Tempranillo I tasted it against.

Late May 2023: deep purple color; intense bouquet of dark cherries and mulberries mingled with aromas of oak, espresso and herbs; smooth and round on the palate with a balancing juicy acidity; fleshy tannins in the cheeks; long finish. 93-94/100
Excellent Numanthia 2006 could eventually improve into an outstanding one.

100% Tinta de Toro from over 100 ungrafted, non-irrigated parcels aged between 50 and 100 yo located in the villages of Valdefinjas, Toro and El Pego. The fully destemmed fruit is cold-soaked with the skins for more than a week followed by fermentation and maceration over a period of 21 days. Aged in new French oak barrels for 18 months. 15% alcohol.
Quite opaque, rather evolved and slightly hazy blackish-red color. The nose feels sweetish and somewhat tertiary with aromas of dried figs and dates, some raisiny tones, a little bit of balsamic VA, light toasty notes of mocha oak, a hint of strawberry jam and an alcoholic touch of plum liqueur. The wine feels broad, ripe and somewhat fat on the palate with a very full body and intense, sweet-toned flavors of blackberry jam, some pruney tones, a little bit of woody oak spice, light oxidative notes of beef jerky, a hint of dried dates and a touch of balsamic VA. The acidity feels quite modest - especially when contrasted with such a big body - so the structure relies almost completely on the ample, quite tough and still rather grippy tannins. The finish is juicy, big and sweet-toned with moderately grippy tannins and a lush, medium-long aftertaste of raisiny and dried dates, some gamey notes of meat, a little bit of beef jerky, light mocha notes of toasted new oak, a hint of strawberry jam and a touch of strawberry jam. The wine ends on a quite grippy and rather warm note.
A huge blockbuster Toro that feels a bit too ripe for its own good and where the age is starting to show quite a bit. The wine isn't falling apart yet, but the wine isn't young anymore, obviously - there are some oxidative beef jerky tones showing up and it's hard to assess whether it's the age or the excessive ripeness that makes the wine taste so pruney and raisiny. With its quite pronounced alcohol heat, huge and chewy body and quite raisiny fruit flavors, this is starting to drink more like an Amarone than a Tempranillo. While still enjoyable, I must admit I'm not a fan.

Deep ruby color with black fruit on the nose and palate. Also has some spice and coffee. Cleary in it's drinking interval. Drank over 2 nights with softer tannins on the second night.

Masculine, still pretty tannic, acidity provides freshness. Dark fruyit, cocoapowder, coffee grounds, charred oak, bbq, ferrous minerality. Holding up very well, cruising through midlife.

Was pleasantly surprised with this. Several bottles of various vintages had been overly tannic and thought o drink no matter how long the decant. This was completely different. Soft tannins fully integrated with a lovely mouth feel and finish.lovely.

from a magnum... big, dark and concentrated. blackberries, spice, liquorice. on the palate, it's weighty, full and round, fruit forward but not jammy or cloying. rather, it's surprisingly lithe, well balanced and smooth. very very good.

Good wine, but not exciting (different). Blue fruit, well integrated tannins, this isn't going to get any better but has a few more years left. Easy to drink.

Decanted 2 hrs. Dense, youthful colour. Large bq w dark fruit (cherries, blackberries), exotic spices, coffee, well integrated oak. Almost full-bodied w fresh acidity, prominent tannins, sour cherries. Aftertaste long , w hints of orange peel. Some, but not much complexity. Nearing its peak, but will last maybe ten years.

Popped and poured and it continued to improve over dinner. Very good nose of black cherry, plum, violets and herbs. The palate is modern with soft tannins but reasonably balanced and sporting concentrated flavors of black currant, plums, tobacco and herbs rolling up into a long satisfying finish. This has taken on some early complex notes in the mid palate but I think it will continue to evolve nicely and develop more complexity in the next ten years.

Drank over 7 hours including a long decant. At its peak, drink now.
Big, powerful, dense wine. Some black fruit, oak, chocolate, and balsamic notes. A rugged production with coffee hints, cigar box, and black tea. Meaty undertones. Medium plus finish.
This came across for me as a gigantic wine that was putting its best foot forward. The tannins, alcohol, and oak are all integrated, so there was intense, beautiful fruit that dominated. Have no idea what 20 years will do for this wine.
This was better than the last bottle I had. Popped and poured. Pretty nose of violets and blackberries. The palate shows rich, concentrated black fruit, smoke and coffee wrapped in a medium to full bodied well made wine. This wine is much better balanced then the last yet retains lots of aging potential ahead.

Cherry with orange to slight tinges of brown. Fully mature. Black fruits with nice acidity. Short ( 15 second) finish. Will finish all I have this year
Dark purple, full bodied Faint nose, but hints of berries, mint, all spice, cigar box Big and bold, still retaining its structure, tastes like the nose, with a medium finish. It's nicely balanced with refreshing characteristics. Consumed over four hours, at cool temperature. Excellent wine.

Decanted 4-5 hours. Deeply coloured still. Sweet, fleshy black berry fruits mixed with chocolate and a hint of developed characters. There's freshness on the medium-full palate. Tannnins are fine grained and integrating nicely.

I was a bit disappointed by this. The wine is big, dense and still fairly youthful but it’s a bit of a monolithic modern monster. The oak is too dominating infusing the nose and palate with woody vanilla obscuring underlying flavors and details. I didn’t get the feeling this is going to get much better with time either.

Black fruit, not as rich as expected and losing spotlight to some secondary flavors, even subtle leather. Add some sweet and tamed tannins and this one 06 seems already drinkable.

Everything we've come to expect from this wine, with rich black cherry, smoke and a hint of anise. All nicely integrated and smooth. We paired with Indian cuisine and it worked perfectly. Saved a glass for second night and it was still delicious.

Still big and round and showing its strength and weight. Tannins are settled. Drink or hold, but I'd start tasting it if you have several. We had it with a black peppered pork loin... the wine needs something sturdy. One bottle left, will drink it in a year or two...

This is in a really good place. Big, rich and opulent. Black and red fruits. Smoky, anise, long finish. I am impressed with how this wine has matured. More mellow now than it used to be. Pretty darn refined at this point.

Still a very fresh and fruit driven wine. That said, there is plenty of exciting structural elements in the wine. It is soft yet round and focused with an evident acidic backbone providing support. The profile start red and ends dark and toasted. A really good wine.

This had the powerful character of VA/nail polish remover that I'm sensitive to, but otherwise appeared to have a good profile and body; a bit too much tannin still for the fruit, but it could yet turn into a leathery example of an old and complex red. - Unlikely I'll drink my others.

Powerful bouquet of jammy black cherries, boysenberries and their liqueurs; unsweetened chocolate, charcoal, leather. Spanish Sipping 'n Snacking Sunday. Fourth wine of the seven, second red.
Dark, brooding, purple-red daring you to sniff 'n sip. The colour effectively demands one's attention.
Ripe fruits, espresso and some spice on the nose. We can feel some earthiness in the bouquet. Yet again, the Siren Song is loud and clear...we are drifting.
Kapow, round, full-bodied, silky tannins, velvety yet broad-shouldered finish. She is a keeper!
Without question, this is the one to purchase when in an excellent restaurant where fear of 3x markups can easily be assuaged.

New World Spanish tasting. Tasted over five hours. More complex than the Termes, and more ready to drink than the Termanthia. Ripe cherries, some tobacco and leather, with cedar , some oak, great balance and a nicely done finish. Terrific with the food and cheese. These age well, lots of life left, but hitting on all cylinders now.

Dark purple. Huge wine with multiple layers of deep black fruit, noticed a little more oak in this bottle , and a lengthy finish. Consistent, reliable, New World styled wine. I think these are terrific wines. I do also enjoy the lighter more elegant Tempranillos depending on mood and food for dinner, but these are wines that many people really enjoy.

Rich, ripe and fleshy wine, which is not for the faint hearted. Plenty of black fruits and spice are coated in refined oak. The alcohol (15%) is not noticeable, but no doubt contributes to the wines richness. It can cause widely differing opinions around the table. Needs a hearty dish.

It has been quite a while since I opened one of these. Well, I should not have waited. This is a suburb Tempranillo from Toro. Dark, opaque garnet with a purple tint. Nose of black cherry, blackberry, vanilla, and spice. Full round palate of ripe black cherry, blackberry, hoisin, and black licorice on the long finish. Refreshing acidity. Mostly integrated oak (give it another 2-3 years for full integration). Sweet tannins. Outstanding wine.

A fascinating wine that still needs time. At first a very medicinal quality, that was eventually narrowed down to the leaves of a cedar tree (not as pungent as the cedar wood, itself) and/or pine-sol. Mixed in with some stewed raspberry jam. Smooth tannins, mod-long length.

Still too early and seems to be in a dormant phase right now. Amazing nose upon opening which closed up after 10 minutes and never came back over the next hour and a half with dinner. On the palate very velvety but one dimensional in flavor with a modest finish. I will wait another year or 2 before trying another.

Started at 93 and declined as the one dimensional profile of this wine emerged. Well made for this style, agreed on a prior review of being a crowd pleaser for those who sip a giacomo conterno barolo and wonder where the vanilla went. Not my style of wine and doubt it will go for the long haul. Amazing on how these type of wines dont do well the next day once opened.

Decanted and drank over 3 hours. Incredibly dense. Very dark fruit, coffee, licorice, chocolate, lots of wood and tannin. Deep, ripe, forward, monolithic. Very tannic. This needs a lot of time. It dwarfed the 08 quintessa we had next to it. Long tannic finish.

This one was singing on the pop! Fruit was outstanding, if a little over the top. Great earthy quality as well. However, by day 2 it had started getting porty and stewed. Unfortunate, although I did finish the bottle. Still a tasty wine, that I would buy again (and finish on day 1).

Final longo e gostoso. Um vinho para se repetir.

First time trying this wine. Have enjoyed the entry level Toro Termes from the 2006 vintage on several occasions. The Termes Numanthia was fantastic and well worth the step-up in price. Beautiful combination of fruit and oak with firm but smooth tannins and an extremely long finish. Extremely well made.

We enjoyed 4 bottles of this outstanding wine at Opazo in Madrid. The previous night we drank Vega Sicilia Valbueno - the Numanthia was much better! The wine was a little tight upon opening but opened up quickly in the decanter. The Numanthia had a super rich nose and lots and lots of big cherry fruit - I could smell the bouquet from this wine all night! I enjoyed this wine so much I've been searching the web trying to find some for my cellar. I highly recommend it!

Smoke, spices, blackberries and oak is present on the nose in this wine. On the palate, the wine is concentrated, but it still has a slightly cool and mineral profile. The wine is dominated by dark fruits and has a firm tannic backbone. Wonderful wine!

Could almost be confused with a California Syrah, but there's a welcome chalky darkness that pervades making the wine that bit more interesting. Needs at least a half hour to decant, not so much because it's too tannic, but rather that the fruit is too forward and overwhelms at first.

Big wine. Big nose, big flavors, big legs! Lot's of oak, blackberry and a little blueberry. I gather that most spanish wines are aiming to achieve what Numanthia does consistently as this is one of the high water marks for tempranillo. At $24 this is a tremendous value.

Decanted for 1 hour. Dark purple color. Oak / blackberrys (very new world in style) on the nose. Rich mouthfeel with licorice / black cherry / blackberry / some minerality. Medium+ body with medium + finish. Excellent with grilled skirt steak - the alchohol is carried nicely and enough acidity to handle the fruit. This is a big wine and the Burgundy drinkers I was with were not huge fans of this - if you like big wines and grilled food this is a very good wine (92-93).

Dinner at Jace's (Jace's House): Lacking presence or vitality in the palate, the wine felt deperssed and unwilling to come out of its room. It has a certain stylistic approach to its craft; heavy handed blueberry and ripe, opulent fruit, but it seems to be missing the mark to my palate (as an AFWE wine should, bien sur!).

Numanthia, 2006, about $50 on sale, from LaBodega in Anchroage Alaska. Deep red to purple color. thick, slow legs. Dense nose that is less like a common tempranillo and more like a big gordeaux or even barolo. Very nice aromas of fruit and earth - with something in the background that is masked yet. The french oak does not dominate. Noticieable alcohol on entry; thick mouthfeel, rich flavors of black and red fruits with good balance other than being hot. Plenty of tannin shows in the mouth but does not really overpower as I expected it to. Finish is medium long and fairly balanced for being so young. I really think this needs at least 4-5 years before drinking. With some age I think it will yield a well balanced, complex wine with more qualities of a good blended red than I ever expected from 100% temparanillo. I give it a 91 pts score now, but I think it could end up being even better, but I've never had this wine before so I can't swear to it.
Served with a slightly spicy vegetable soup and bread. The saffron and fennel in teh soup went welll with the wine.

Purchased on a whim. COLOR: Purplish-red. Opaque. Neither enticing nor off-putting. NOSE: Interesting. Tar, pencil lead, blueberries, leather. TASTE: Very smooth, pencil lead again. Some plum and blackberry. The tannins are a little strong on the finish and although the acid was very well balanced when sampled alone, it became rather overpowering when paired with a red sauce and pasta. OVERALL: Nice wine. Enjoyable. Probably pair well with red meat. Maybe even roast chicken. (3+12+16+7)

Numanthia Seminar (Binny's South Loop, chicago IL): nose: more forward on the nose then the 05 was with tart tones of black fruits, dark tones of raspberries, dark red cherries, sweet cassis, dark berries, and liqueur tones. A nice array of fruit on the nose, but lacking a bit in depth and elegance that was a hallmark of the 05
taste: a massive attack with a real good finish, this is lacking a bit on the mid palate with tones of black fruits, dark raspberries, sweet cassis, and some dark chocolate tones with a bit of heat on the back end form on the palate. Good medium/full feel with medium+ acidity
overall: a bit of a slut wine in a way. It doesn't have the elegance of the 05 and is more forward then the 05 was. A bit of time sideways should hopefully flesh out the mid-palate and have this become a much better wine

Bodega Numanthia Seminar (Binny's South Loop - Chicago, IL): Deep royal purple color. Opaque only at the center. Less berry driven than the Termes with masculine force. Charred wood, gravel and tar accompany black spices mostly pepper. Bitter chocolate roll off the back end of the nose. Palate is very lush and approachable now though showing great potential for 5-10 year ageing. Lush and round on the nose, though showing much more oak the the 2005. A little thinner and lighter stylistically than the '05 as well. This was probably a sign of the vintage as a whole rather than vinifaction considering I found to be the same when comparing the '05 and '06 Termanthia. High acidity, moderate high alcohol and tannins lead way to solid vanilla with a toasty component. Rose petals show during the last sip. Stylistically the '05 performs better for me, though this is very nice.

Well, actually not 100 in the way you care about. What I mean is that many of these new, upcoming Spanish wines have hit a near perfect rate of absolute reproduction. I've tried about a dozen over the last month and they all pretty much look, smell and taste the same. About the best thing that can be said is that this wine has a long, long finish. That's no wonder though given the amount of fruit and alcohol swirling in your mouth. Parker scored this wine 90+ but as I have learned my palette is calibrated more softly, along less precisely defined dimensions. I don't really know how to score this wine other than to say that I wouldn't buy it again. (Editor's note: 100 point score removed since the note admits he doesn't know how to score this wine. Then don't...)

Masculine, still pretty tannic, acidity provides freshness.
Dark fruyit, cocoapowder, coffee grounds, charred oak, bbq, ferrous minerality.
Holding up very well, cruising through midlife.

from a magnum... big, dark and concentrated. blackberries, spice, liquorice. on the palate, it's weighty, full and round, fruit forward but not jammy or cloying. rather, it's surprisingly lithe, well balanced and smooth. very very good.

My last bottle. Alas....
Fantastic wine at a great price.

It's drinking better than it ever has.
Dark purple, full bodied
Faint nose, but hints of berries, mint, all spice, cigar box
Big and bold, still retaining its structure, tastes like the nose, with a medium finish. It's nicely balanced with refreshing characteristics. Consumed over four hours, at cool temperature. Excellent wine.

Quite the blockbuster. Otherworldly in many ways. Such backbone, yet such subtelty at the same time - the markings of a very fine wine indeed. One of my favorites. Striking, bold and yet velvety and almost subtle.

Consistent with prior notes, really like this wine and can't keep my hands off it, despite its the fact it will benifit from a few more years aging.

Big wine, full of blueberry, blackberry and spice. Loads of juicy acidity to balance out and the tannins were mild...Could use a year or 2 but very nice now.

[Cork, 15%AV] Decanted 1 hr. Lots of blackberries and spice on the nose. Beautifully full and long, yet quite balanced. Chocolate, spice, ripe tannins and black fruits abound. The alcohol is carried seamlessly.

Very nice, balanced wine. A nose with a faint whiff of melon, dominated by cherry and spice. Medium bodied with a soft but determined finish. Silky but present tannins, good acid, tastes of dark berry, wood, hint of licorice, coriander. Enjoyable depth and balance.

The saffron and fennel in teh soup went welll with the wine.

beautiful dark Ruby red. The nose was dark cherries, cream soda, and herbs. The structure was round with still young tannins covering the mouth. Big and well balanced, the cherry fruit was expressive and the acidity a perfect compliment. Give it an hour after decanting.

N- much darker than the 05. Lots of blueberry and blackberry and some purple florals.
T- nearly nonexistent on the front end and then finishes like a long freight train with dark chocolate,
raspberries,leather, and dark- dark fruits.
Interesting now but not fully together.Could be a stunner in 5+

Nice nose of ripe blueberries and new wood. The mouthfeel was medium to full bodied with rich bright fruit dominated by blueberry and fresh blackberry, with hints of ceder and brown spice. The finish was moderate, and there was a sweetness and silkiness of this which belied the price. Great buy!

Mid Dec 2008: decanted; deep purple ink; intense red and dark berries, vanilla and cigar box aromas/flavors; medium/full body; juicy and smooth, however a slightly slight restrained texture.
Still very young, needs another 4-5 years of aging.
