2020 Sine Qua Non Distenta White II

  • Lovely. Young and delicious. Like a young Montrachet. The blend adds enormous complexity and hints of lemon, honeysuckle, peach without any of the graphite or weight of a big Chardonnay. Light greenish tint adds to the mystery. Wonderful wine. Will hold remaining two bottles.

  • Aromas of honeysuckle, flowers, citrus, apricot and sea spray. Flavors of quince, orange marmalade, mineral, hint of vanilla and apricot. Ends with a long finish of 40+ seconds.

  • Courtesy of Allred on Friendsgiving, opened alongside the 2021 Andremily White Cuvee to compare the two newest whites of these wineries. If tasting blind I would have sworn this was a NZ Sauvignon Blanc. The cut grass and cat pee receded somewhat during the course of the evening, but never entirely went away for me. Yes, it is painfully young, but we've been doing this with the SQN for a few years now and the tradition continues. I'll hold my bottles for a few years yet, and there is no hurry after that.

  • A friendsgiving tradition, we always open our first bottle of the newest SQN white. Popped and poured. Deep color. Starts out very grassy, quite reminiscent of a sauv blanc actually, along with citrus fruit. Flavors of spice, citrus and melon are nearly overwhelmed by oak and toasted wood tones. Improved a bit with air, developing a lovely white peach note, but at this stage the oak is a bit much. New oak accounted for only 45% of the barrels used when making this wine, but it really stands out. This will need plenty of time for the wood to integrate. I much preferred the Andremily white opened alongside.

  • Still SO young. Approachable but would do better to age a few more years in the bottle. But stellar stuff.

  • Unique and likely served just a touch too cold. Really fascinating how the weight of fruit is able to balance out the level alcohol on this wine. I understand the criticism of the weight, but call it a guilty pleasure wine of opulence for me.

  • I popped the first of my 9 bottle allocation, and will refrain from touching any more for a few years! These whites are hard to come by firstly, secondly, I find that all his whites really first show their true characteristics after a good 5+ .... but was it an amazing sip ..... don't be shy if you have enough bottles for sticking away.

  • The opening bottle of our Fathers Day dinner. It is a really excellent wine, very reminiscent of a great chardonnay, but I honestly do not see the 97's and 98's that are being given.

  • Wow - Intense, drinkable, not as thick as expected. Some tropical fruit. A "disappearing bottle"

  • This is a snappy wine. Has a bit of spritz. Lots of flavors and layers. Pineapple, mango and melon. Loved it. I love SQN's white wines even better I think than some of SQN's red ones. This wine was delicious. Enjoyed with great friends at Edison House.

  • In typical Sine Qua Non fashion, the white in this vintage is a fetching Frankenstein concoction of 32% Roussanne, 26% Viognier, 25% Chardonnay, 12% Gelber Muskateller (so… basically Muscat), and 5% Petit Manseng. If a slightly unripe pineapple had a honey love child with the 2020 employee-of-the-year worker bee, it would be the Distenta II. It’s not so tropical that you feel like a saccharine succubus scuba diving in the Seychelles, but there is indeed a touch of the exotic that sets off the attack of honeyed lemon, pineapple, nectarine skin, lemon verbena, grass, and white travertine notes. The balance is better than Simone Biles on a balance beam bender, sauntering across the palate with swag and confidence, but with seamless stability and poise. The uniformity is rock-solid, especially for such a young and vibrant wine. The attack is not reckless or wild, instead, it presents as a more modulated unfolding of flavors. The finish is slightly oily, but less so than its younger siblings from the 2018 and 2019 vintages; there is a backend dryness that keeps the core in complete control. Perhaps this is the most poised SQN white of recent memory?

This is drinking incredibly well now, but I suspect will be even more integrated and complex with a handful of years under its belt. Not to worry, it shan't take long. Hold bottles until 2025 for best results.

For those SQN technicians who can’t get enough Excel data-spatter, the vineyard composition includes 52% Eleven Confessions, 22% The Third Twin, 13% Cumulus, and 13% from the estate-outsider Bien Nacido. 45% new wood was used. Two years in barrel.

Food pairings: Sonoma duck breast with leaks and scallions, Halibut tacos (cuz you’ll look like a straight baller walking up to the taco truck with a bottle of SQN in your hand), Plantain arepas, Hawaiian pizza (but use crispy prosciutto instead of ham so you look more like a fancy foodie – and top with fresh thyme – again, so your friends can call you “artisanal”), 7-11 nachos with whatever that rubbery liquid “cheese” sauce is, Brioche French toast.

  • One of the best white wines I have ever had! Some similarities to a really good Chardonnay, but more interesting and more complex. Rich golden color, melon, pear and other flavors.

  • Yeah I know it just arrived and is way to early/young but just had to. No regrets as this was killer and a few steps above past years. It actually reminds me of Marcassin Chardonnay but with more acid/structure. Melon and dried herbs up front and nothing but crème brûlée on the finish. It needs time to fatten up but really good now.
