  • Tasted with NMMNORI. Don’t entirely agree with his assessment. Relatively little fruit remaining, but drinks like it should at 40. Sous bois and tea (Nori is correct from time to time), with the ethereal, intense je ne sais quoi native to this wine and only a handful of others. An absolute delight - the last sip far better than the first.

  • Tasted in Brooklyn with DJCV; an ex-Jim bottle. The wine was mostly secondary with very little fruit in tact. Tea and sous bois. Not unenjoyable, but rather long in the tooth.

  • Magnum 000419/13158. Purple ruby with some orange color. Dusty, misty, smoky aroma with green stems, dries rose, purple fruits, purple flower, little bit leather, red bean like oak, mushroom. high acidity. integrated strong tannin.

Next day morning, it has lots of sediment, even darker color. more animal, leather, forest, little bit dried flower and purple. It's more sweeter than last night. Body became heavier.

It doesn't have much Hoisin and ocean flavor like other La tache I had before.

  • Magnum 000419/13158, served out of glass. Smoky, red fruit, hawthorn, high acidity, soil, very characteristic to the vintage. On the palate it became gradually sweeter, very resolved with good spiciness. 93-94

  • From magnum. From the second the first pour hit the glass it was obvious this was a home run bottle. Classic DRC Asian spices, red fruits, minerality and that sensual velvet that comes with DRC and especially La Tache. Still so much detail to this wine. On the palate the texture was soft, silky and very pleasing. This wine is well integrated at this point with no rough edges. Becoming more feminine yet retaining plenty of power. Awesome bottle.

  • This is drinking somewhere near its apogee. Complex aromatics of Hoisin, sous bois, compost and smoke. The palate was fine and lacy, with excellent detail and exquisite balance. There is perfect harmony between sweet and vinous flavours and the more savoury elements. It has power without weight and the finish is expansive and so persistent.

  • This wine served out of a double magnum was fully evolved and had a dizzying, captivating nose, but the palate was rather slow out of the blocks, initially lacking and giving the impression that this wine was a bit tired. Then as if by magic it pulled itself up and transmogrified into something quite beautiful, exotic and erotic: oriental spices and teas, exotic mushrooms and truffles. This is something in my limited experience that DRC often does. The last La Tache I tried was the 1996 which is at least five years away so it was thrilling to try a fully mature example out of a large format.

  • Later in the night and not a ton of notes. Good spice and red fruits. Not the best year but this nonetheless was very good. Surprised how much life this had left in it - this wine is in great shape. My notes say very good and this was probably helped by being one of the younger DRCs in the flight.

  • Great. Note the comparison to the ‘76 Riche. Smoky with gamey meat/duck. Both sweet and savoury. This has probably gained the most with air and towards the end of the night has a big projection of developed and earthy fruit, soil, and mushroom. On the palate the fruit here has great development and a pleasant sweetness that is still vibrant and sweet with some good meat savoury. Sweet red berries and tea.

  • Another superb, perfectly stored example of La Tache. Nose was heavenly and there was ample fruit... BUT...

Some carbonation in the palate. So I asked about Coravin, and sure enough it had been coravin'd.

Ugh. I always tell my friends I'd rather risk us drinking an off bottle than ruining the experience of a great wine with the side effects of this gas.

It feels like a crime against humanity was committed by pumping this masterpiece full of bubbles.

Still got a feel for this wine, and was immensely priveleged to drink it. But seriously, Coravin is maybe ok for big tannic wines, maybe -- but it's a major gamble with soft, old Burgundy.

  • Romanée-Conti v. La Tâche: Fresh, fleshy, highly expressive. Very pretty and showy. A touch of pine spice in here too. Exciting and lively on the palate with bright cherry and rhubarb. Different from the '83 RC.

  • Resolved and enjoyable. Classic La Tache profile.

  • Violets and spice roar from the glass on opening. Deep and rich. A firm tannic backbone remains. Dark fruit and sous bois on the palate. Color is noticeably brown. Tonight a great experience.

  • Consumed at Berns in Tampa, FL. Still going strong; plenty of life left in this.

  • Opened for 4 hours prior to drinking. Complex nose of spice, dried red fruits and some flowers. A nicely complex palate that matched the nose but with more emphasis on minerality. A medium finish that was somewhat tannic. A very interesting Burgundy, but certainly much better wines to drink for the price.

  • My first La Tache ever and all I can say is wow wow wow. The nose was simply out of this world for me, I won't even try to give descriptors for it because I'd need a real-time newsfeeed - the nose kept changing every time I put my nose in the glass. I called it the "chameleon" wine, it was simply impossible to nail. The palate and finish were not on par with the nose but still of superior quality. Needless to say I enjoyed this tremendously. It showed a lot of characteristics from an aged wine (guess it's not that much of a surprise after more than 25 years) and started to fade a bit in the glass after a few hours but that was still a completely amazing bottle of wine and I would hate to focus on the negative side of such an incredible bottle of wine, that's really not what it was about - just pure pleasure in a glass. Thanks so much to Alan for introducing me to this.

  • Light Lumber in the High Country; 4/30/2009-5/2/2009: Very disappointing bottle. Dirty, unpleasant, and went south. Shocking, considering it came out of the same owc as the spectacular 83 DRC Eche last night.

  • Beautiful nose of red and black fruits. Spicy, sweet and incredible pure Pinot extracts.

  • Farewell to a Friend: The nose on this is multi-layered, intoxicating and memorable with fennel, earth, leather, five spice, tea leaves and smoke aromas. The palate is a different story and is sadly looking a little bit tired and lacking in fruit. As a consequence the acid and tannins stand out a bit (although the tannins are clearly very fine), with a bit more fruit I'm sure that they wouldn't have been a problem. Still, it's not every day one gets a chance to drink La Tache, and I am thankful to Alex for the opportunity.

  • ERI Pre-Auction Tasting (The Adventurers Club - Chicago IL): Tasting, brief note. Lots of mature fruit and slightly more mushroom. Still firm and rugged. Good, but not LaTache good.

  • This was another aged beauty, perhaps not one of the great vintages of La Tâche, but a beauty nonetheless. This was a subtle and elegant wine that whispered rather than roared, opening up slowly and quietly to reveal a haunting mélange of truffles, black tea, soy sauce, burnt brown sugar, and earth tones. Not a showstopper, but it couldn't have been more harmonious or classy. I could get used to drinking this kind of stuff.

  • Wine tasting. Excellent Asian spice on the nose with lots of charm. Not much fruit on the nose or palate, instead quite a bit of leather and forest floor along with a more muted version of the spice from the nose. Tannins are still rather pronounced, leading to a weak caustic finish.
