Burnt reddish brown, sediment. Dried berry fruit, smokey, sandalwood, leather and tobacco. Definitely showing its age, but wonderful example of tertiary flavour development. Flavours follow aromas with some balsamic on the finish. Dusty tannins, start off sweet then turn bitter.

Meaty and large scaled with a lot of ripe concentrated fruit. Also evident oak. I think this will be more interresting after 10 more years in the cellar.

Mature and declining fruit, framed by a residual oak aroma. Traditional flavors of wild berries grilled over open fire and a texture of a medium to high acidity, followed by a slightly off-balanced hot finish. Drink now.

Dark. Young-looking, though this IS ready. Barely Spanish (which contradicts my previous note, I know). Fruity, ripe. Tasty. Average length, depth and things, and also dull and generic. Very poor showing. 88-89

A Spanish wine and tapas evening (Restaurante Meson Galicia, Hamburg): Two Magnums, same taste: still very tight, young, acid and mineralic driven, graphite, savoury concentrated blackberry, perfect with tapas, long nearly gentle aftertaste, can be enjoyed now but will benefit from some 5+ years in the cellar, ***(*), 91+ potential

Tasted alongside the 2001 and the 2003 Reserva Especial. More backward than both, cooler in terms of fruit profile, more structure and freshness. Lovely depth of dark fruit, slightly spicy. Less complex in comparison, but very good. 91-93

Closed wine in a period of hibernation. Muted nose; the body is long and linear; the fruit simply lacks complexity now and only hints at a potential complexity. Will leave it to put on the weight and structure for the next 3 years or so.

A big, oaky smokey wine. Huge fruit and oak. I used to like these kinds of wines more but now I find that I love them for the first few sips and then find them overblown. I also don't find it an easy wine to pair with food

Not impressed. Too heavy on oak and a bit overextracted for my taste. somehow the wine does not feel ready yet but I am not sure whether it will come around. It was more balanced on day 2, though. I found the 09 Pesquera Crianza the better wine with more character (for half the price).

Concentrated. Fruited. Good spice and texture. Firm finish. But the overriding impression is that this is at least 5 years too young at the moment. Rated for drinking now: 86-89, but don't do it

This has plateau-ed since last tasting in 2010. Still good acidity to go with exotic dark plum and berry flavors, more in the Pingus or Mauro ballpark, than in classic dry Ribera. This harks back to when Pesquera was Pesquera and the wine emphasized exotic fruit and stunning elegance and opulence, though it is not a massive wine. It IS a hedonistic wine, however.Along with 2004, best Pesquera since the the 1990s.

Wow, this was an outstanding wine interesting in that I rated the Crianza the same high-score but this was a completely different wine (as it should be) - Dark, well concentrated with a nose of extreme plum, black fruit, spice, tar, licorice and vanilla, amazing complexity and structure, very well balanced, smooth/dry on the palate with terrific length, must have more!
