Community Tasting Notes (65) Median Score: 92 points

  • Very bricked, maderiazed color. Cork was fine and oxidation is not the culprit here. This is the second bottle that has presented this way. I don't think it's flawed, I just think it is no good. Volatile, nutty, embers, slightly medicinal. Not enjoyable. Another drainpour for this wine.

  • Past prime. Heavy sediment, and raisin-ey quality. Surprised this was such high alcohol content.

  • Sweet cigar box nose; sweet plum and cedar; coarse and long.

  • Purtroppo vino in deciso declino.

  • Had coravined this about a year ago and had a few sips. Finally pulled the cork bc I kept tripping on it in the cellar. Has held up very nicely. Not quite the magic of the first bottle I had in 2014 but still very solid terroir driven masculine island red. Dried red fruits, wild herbs and mushrooms. Packs a wallop of EtOH so be careful. I have this in an updated vintage and I am really looking forward to breaking into them.

  • As others noted, this smelled and looked like paint thinner on opening. Did not have time to revisit - so will need to keep for a couple of days and see what comes out the other side.

  • Absolutely beautiful. Delicate rose petals. Brickish red. Just enough hint of funk to be interesting. Strawberries. Tobacco. Long finish. Decanted and continued to unfold over a couple hours. Got deeper and darker. Acidity stayed refreshing. Still good on night 2 but lost a fair bit to sediment.

  • Dont get this wine at all. Might have been better earlier in life, but nothing left but thin fruit and sour notes.

  • I am loving this. Last bottle

  • Pale, cloudy appearance--looks old. Musty notes on the nose; palate's all tertiary, with something that reminds me of 40-50 year old syrah. Not enjoyable.

  • Lots of sediment. Waited too long on this one. Acid, strawberries, agree with other some characters of a Pinot

  • Never tried this wine before. Opened and had a taste last night, but no note. Note after 24 hours of air.

This has the weight and fragrance of a pinot, but with a more tannic structure. Almost overripe on the nose, stewed plums and strawberry. Slightly bitter on the palate, but with nice sweet and full fruit (like a CA pinot), flavor leans more to strawberry and cherry but there is an edge of leather and tea. Can see where the paint thinner references come from, but that it just a hint. Overall an interesting and complex wine. Powerful but tasty.

  • On opening, this wine was thin, acrid, and vegetal. After a couple hours in the carafe, it was a pleasure to drink: Light and playful in style, yet also with some backbone. Worth the $59? Nope. But the $35 CA syrah I bought awhile ago probably ain't worth $35, either... If I had another I think I'd wait another 5-10 years just to see what happens. Didn't get the sweetness on this wine that some have mentioned, if I remember correctly.

  • Crazy VA on the nose early on, bordering on off-putting. The palate was much less controversial, though it showed solid natty funk for the first few hours. But the wine refined and focused itself, and by the next day showed rich dried cherry and balsam notes, with noticeable tannin and freshness. Big and dense stuff, though. This definitely needed time to show its best, which turned out to be pretty decent.

  • My first time with a wine from this producer and I like it. Light brick / orange color. Roasted strawberries with an initial hint of kerosene. Integrated with thirty minutes in the glass. The fuel smell settled into a tanned leather nuance. Intense flavor but not heavy. There is some tannin in the back end but I feel it is drinking well now. The brightness offsets the roasted fruit nicely. Pretty unique wine. (91)

  • Aromas of a bowl of "over-the-hill" prunes on opening ... damn near poured it out. Big change after about 45 minutes. As everyone has noted, this is an unusual wine. The prunes morphed into paint thinner and dried cranberry. The colors are an unusual combination of orange-tea and cranberry, and the flavors are mostly dried red fruits along with some leather-like notes . It has a lean (but not thin) body, a big bite of acidity, a lot of sharp edges, good balance and interesting complexity. Overall it has an almost "unkept" or rustic character that I found to be more interesting and unusual, than it was enjoyable.

  • Ap: a bit cloudy brownish ruby red (I've tried a few Dettories and this is the normal appearance)
Ar: Complex and funky nose with a mix of red berries. Great intensity.
Full bodied without being fat and overwhelming, lean without being narrow. Great balance. Good purity. Mindblowing intensity. However, compared to the top cuvee it has a small tad of salty harshness on the palate.
    Extremely good length

    50+3+15+18+9

I understand that this is not a wine that works for everyone, but I suggest to close your eyes and just smell and taste the wine before using to much time on the (always) muddy look.
Dettori is an extremist when it comes to winemaking and will easily fall in the category love or hate. For me it has always been love.

  • Lots of sediment. Good red fruits fades fast at peak or on downhill

  • Dettori's wines should come with a label reading, "Warning! Abundant fine sediment!" Even with a very careful decant, I had to decant again after letting the haze settle out. The sediment has an unpleasant bitter taste. Once it's gone, what remains is a pale red wine that starts out with an odd smell, a bit like paint thinner or gingko trees. This blows off after about an hour, and strawberry and white flowers appear on the nose. On the palate, the wine starts off with cranberries, cherry, and notes of white pepper and citrus, with no noticeable tannins and powerful acidity. A candied cherry note increased over a couple of hours, and contrast with the citrus and mouthwatering acidity on the medium finish made this interesting and tasty. Unusually, the high alcohol was completely undetectable to me. This is an interesting wine, but not a good value, and the amount of trouble it takes to make it drinkable is a nuisance. I'm glad I tried it once, because my curiosity is now permanently satisfied.

  • Very interesting and exotic wine. I totally get the favorable and unfavorable tasting notes. Yes, this wine is feral and a bit funky. Light cranberry color and a bit cloudy. A hint of sourness blows off with air time. A bit of volatility provides lift to the cement and floral aromas with a touch of mint. Intense cherry fruit. Good persistence and a silky finish. The fruit covers the 16 percent alcohol listed on the bottle. Really unusual wine and a bit rustic in style.

  • This is coming into its own. Color is weak but The ether nose is diminishing. Fruit is coming up in stature compared to earlier nice red cherry and a nice earthy balance with decent acid. Very enjoyable

  • Cloudy, rust colored. Some VA on the nose. A mix of funk and Welch's grape juice flavors. Very fruity/juicy. Drinkable, and better than my description makes it sound. A brown "Orange Wine" if that makes sense. Fun to try, very unique, put a one time buy for me.

  • Our bottle was a bit funky and perhaps a bit cloudy. I'm not sure if it was bottle variation or the norm for this wine. Decent mature tasting and I doubt there is much to be gained with further age (at least with that bottle).

  • For the price I was expecting great things. Kind of disappointed. The wine was unique for sure. Opened two bottles two hours ahead of dinner. One bottle had a leaky cork and was a bit lighter than the second bottle. The wine was a perfect match for the sautéed grouper with BBQ mango-habanero sauce. A conversation wine...must had never experience this grape.

  • Most disappointing bottle I've had in years. As close to sewer water as vinously possible. Hoping it's a bad bottle but I doubt it.

  • Another off bottle
    Slight cork protrusion
Wine brownish in color and too advanced for age
    Candied and sherries taste
    I'm done with this wine/producer

  • Opened at 11:30 am to drink at 7 pm. Smelled briny, like an over the hill Burgundy. Looked like red swamp water.

At 7pm beautiful wine. Clean rustic fruit. When I say clean, there was nothing inhibiting the fruit, such as oak. The fermenting process in cement makes this different from any wine I've ever tasted. The nose and taste I can only compare to an aged Burgundy but with a hard to explain cleaner and purer fruit. Others thought the nose was like an Amarone. By far the WOTN. My next action is to buy more!

Bel colore mattone brillante molto evoluto, opaco e fuorviante.
Erbe aromatiche, tinture officinali, mirto e balsamicità resinosa.

  • Wow! Not the typical Italian wine. Lighter, smooth, no grit your teeth tannins (although, they did not completely abandon their country).
You can enjoy this with most anything, or just sip it for a casual evening.

  • Ok, this is spectacular. Full stop. Absolutely stunning expression of island grenache. That this is over 15% EtOH is mind-boggling. This wine is clean, pure, light on its feet, and impeccably balanced. Really dangerous combo! Clearly unfined which really adds a lot to this one. One is transported to Sardinia before the stuff hits your lips. It is drinking beautifully at the moment but has the structure for another decade of impressive drinking. I am an idiot for only buying a couple btls.

Bel colore mattone brillante molto evoluto.
Veramente molto molto buono e sempre sorprendente.

  • Double decanted for two hours. Significant sediment. Like some other reviewers I found the first sip offsetting. But the 16% alcohol soon calmed and became an enjoyable, full bodied, dry wine.

  • Sweetness coupled with the heat was too overwhelming. Had with a Dettori Renosu and it's shocking how different the wines are as I think they are the same grape. Enjoyed the Renosu, didn't enjoy this. Brought to a dinner with fellow wine geeks, who love grenache, but they were not fans.

  • a strange nose, I don't think it VA or acetone as other say, but definitely an earthy nose, old world charm to this wine for sure, but perhaps too much alcohol to be truly balanced. high alcohol in a wine that is clearly not a fruit driven bomb doesn't seem to get this to its highest potential of elegance. Expensive on the quality to cost ratio...

  • I too found the nose a bit off-putting, but once past that, the wine was enjoyable. Definitely a different taste, but was balanced and nice with italian food. Unique. Did not find the acetone, biting nature that others have mentioned.

  • Terrible. Huge VA bomb on the nose. Thick, soupy texture. Murky, swampy flavors that finish on a sickeningly sweetish note. DTD.

  • interesting but odd nose, very earthy flavor, old world charm, can be a little sharp if you swig too large of a mouthful, but a nice balanced sipper. My wife liked it, she doesn't like most wine. Oddly, she only seems to like the expensive ones ;-)(without knowing they are expensive).

  • Opened yesterday and did not take notes, but once again a unique flavor profile. Color almost like a rose - very clear and somewhere between pink and red. Complex aromas of dried fruit, leather, dried wood (yes I know they are aged in cement) and a whiff of VA. Very complex on the palate, but lacking much in the way of fruit and out of balance with too much acidity. Light and bright on the palate with a long, dried red fruit finish. Not sure what to think of this wine - very interesting, but a bit sharp and with some flaws.

  • Never again. The last bottle was beautiful. This was undrinkable, and I like Musar, Puzelat, and the like. Way too expensive for the risk. This on top of the declassified red demi-sec is just too much. I liked the first bottle of that batch fine, but the rest were just not good.

  • Very rich, candied fruit, tempered by the sharpness of some VA (not that this is necessarily a good thing, the wine might be better without it), with a very thick sappy texture. There's stuff going on in the nose underneath the dominant menthol/VA smell but you have to filter that out to get to it. Rather similar to the other Dettori wines I've tried (Tuderi, Chimbanta). I'm already getting a bit tired of this style; I wonder what the wines might show were they not obscured by their flaws.

  • Wow, this stands apart from the other bottles I've had from Dettori. Perfectly clean, this one competes with Paolo Bea in the soul department, though, obviously, a very different expression. I think abv is around 16%, but no sense of heat. Beautiful, beautiful red fruits, mulling spices, and tremendous mineral depth. Very impressive.

  • This is an exceptional and unique wine. Amazing combo of menthol, cherry and earth. Cement curated (no wood/oak whatsoever) really and all natural (naturally occurring yeast) really shine through in this unrefined, unfiltered gem. Really something every wine lover (especially old world wine lover) should try.

  • This wine was vile....horrible funk on the nose and cloudy and very pale when first poured. With time, the wine became darker but stayed cloudy and the taste as equally unpleasant and I do think this wine was spoiled with some sort of bacterial action....with time the taste and finish became extremently and essentially acidic...I will open another soon and hopefully this was just a bad bottle and not characteristic...read comments below about unique, unusual, etc., but there was not way to find this pleasant or interesting and certainly not for $63 when you include shipping. UGH!!!

  • popped another one of these and the experience wasn't quite as enjoyable as my last. this bottle was bursting with fruit, but the high ABV showed this time around. It settled down with about 30-40 minutes in the glass, but I will be holding my last bottle for a while.

  • I was anxious to try this based on an email I received from the Wine Connection (Max M.) and on subsequent reviews I read from RP and here on CT. No doubt different than any other wine I have ever had. Brickish, dark red, translucent color - looks like an older bordeaux or burgundy. Very striking, unique nose of (huge) spices, leather, pepper, nail polish, apricot, dried herbs and red fruits with a slightly funky component. Like a prior taster, I kept returning to the nose simply to savor and identify the amazingly complex aromas. Light and bright on the palate with intense flavors of dried cherry & strawberry, and with pepper, clove and cinnamon notes. Very bright acidity and a big waft of abv, but also nicely balanced and very smooth. Long, dried red fruit finish. Reminiscent of a northern rhone with a dash of sherry.

  • The nose was filled with dark red fruits, powdered coco, olive oil, acetone, and dusty potpourri. On the palate, this wine was vibrant, nearing on electric with a hint of volatile acidity, which provided lift to the rich, structured fruit. At first it was pour black cherry juice, but with time the cherry turned to dried and flavors of cinnamon, tobacco and a hint of citrus came forward. The finish was remarkably fresh as red fruits slowly faded away.

1 person found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comment

  • Cloudy, slightly murky in appearance with plenty of sediment throughout. Certainly interesting to taste in small amounts with ripe red berried fruit accented baking spices and funky earthy notes, but there's also noticeable VA and the 16% alcohol is obtrusive and makes this challenging to drink comfortably.

  • For three weeks this bottle sat up in my cellar, waiting for the day that I had the time to open it and let it breath for hours before tasting. The day had finally come. At 10am, the cork was popped and the bottle was left until 6pm before the first glass was poured. The color was red in the center, fading to amber and then orange at the rim. The aromas of this wine drew me in with ripe figs, confectioners sugar, leather, potpourri, rock dust and…green olive. I found myself returning to the glass repeatedly for nothing more than another smell. The first sip took me aback, as an intense wave of rich, almost sweet fruit that was suddenly balanced by griping acidity, flowed across my palate. Flavors of blackberry jam, cinnamon stick, red apples and tobacco followed, complementing this wine’s full body and near invisible 16% alcohol. The finish showed mulling spices, which lasted well over a minute. There were times that the Tenores could have been mistaken for an aged Barolo or Burgundy; it’s an absolutely compelling wine.

  • Had at an offline with several other large wines, so my note should be taken in that context. Enjoyed the sour cherry, strawberry, very fruity nose. Similiar notes on the palate which was refreshing considering the other wines I had consumed earlier - thought the 16% was integrated quite well. Glad I have another 2 of these, particularly at the $30 price point.

  • Very good. Sour cherry, slightly tart (and very acidic). Reminds me a lot of the Tenute della Terre Nere from Etna (which I believe is owned/run by importer Marc de Grazia), which makes wine from Nerello Malacese, which is what I would guess this is (if I didn't know from Garagiste that it was Grenache a/k/a Cananou from Grenache instead of Sicilian wine). I see the reference to Cornelissen (which I think is probably ALSO Nerello Malacase)...

Quite good, with lots of character, but ultimately probably not a wine for everyone due it its tartness (which in some respects is like a very lean, acidic Northern Rhone wine).

  • Started off easy, but as tine webt by it grew less attractive. Woody, almost sherry like flavor. Possibly slightly damaged bottle.

Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Comment

  • Wow. It really has that sharp, cloudy sour red candy element that reminds me of the two Cornelissen wines I've had. But there's also a bit of the dried fig/ nugat thing that the Ogu delivers by the truck-load. And I can even see some similarity to a couple of older, earthy/ mushroomy, understated Robert Michel wines I've had; a '99 St Joseph and an '89 Cornas. I'd love to see how this ages.

This isn't a subtle wine, but the pieces are well-integrated and balance out to make a genuinely funky, brilliant wine.

Yes. Mushroomy. If there was a cherry coated mushroom candy, it would taste like this
