Remarkable! Tremendous rubbish colour, old fashioned came to my mind once I uncorked it, seriousness on the palate bordering to austereness, strict fruit selection! At a great point in its life. Very well made, a wine for the nerds allow me to say!

This was the last wine opened and I paid the least attention to it, regrettably. A bigger version of Magdelaine and with the cocoa dusted fruit and leather with a limestone tinged lift. Very silky. Next time, I'll open a bottle of this on it's own. Not a crime to revisit now, but will probbaly be a wine that improves for a long time. Back in 2015 this was the favorite in a blind tasting 1998 right bank horizontal with heavier hitters (not the heaviest, naturally) and this bottle did nothing to dissuade me from that.

6/12, vg cork, decanted 1/2 hour. Medium/deep garnet core, pale garnet rim. Nose shows pure red fruit - strawberry, touch of cranberry, soil, tea, florals. Quietly aromatic. Medium bodied, strawberry fruit again, lovely texture, quite velvety but with elegance and charm too, notes of tea and soil, fresh acids, long finish with a touch of firmnes still at tail end. Excellent though and certainly drinking (no hurry of course!)

French theme dinner at Highland. Tasted blind. Drank in Grassl 1855. From decanter over 2 hours. Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of menthol, polished oak veneer, blackberries, blackcurrant, earth, violets. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), structured high tannins, full body. Meidum+ flavour intensity, with flavours of spice, polished oak veneer, sweet blackberries, blackcurrant, menthol, violet juice, earth. Very long finish. Excellent quality. Still so much life. Very complex. Lots of freshness.

Bright acids balance black cherry fruit up front, with medium grippy tannins following like a background beat. 13.5% Alc. 90% Merlot, 10% Cab franc. A remarkably balanced and tasty food wine, this played well with a medium-rare steak and grilled mushrooms. As a bonus, a clear head the next day.

Right bank Bordeaux: My contribution, correctly identified in blind. Very opulent, fruit-forward nose but not jammy in a caricature sort of way. Muted palate at first but after a couple of hours this was textbook Magdelaine. Understated and restrained dark red fruit, seamless and elegant palate. Nobody else liked this I think, but by far my favourite of the night.

Ok, this is not ready, not for me. It’s not all closed up, but it is still too clenched and it’s charms are veiled. For now, this shows quite austere, with a ferric-graphite profile and lingering black-tea tannins. When first opened, the bouquet was lifted and minty with some faint ferric notes and a touch of candied fruits underneath. The attack was intense with bright, dry fruit, light bodied but not dilute, earthy, lingering, still firm, cool and minty, very old school, relies foremost on it’s acids. Hard to read, but wait at least 5 years.

From the same bottle as note below, 11 vintage vertical tasting, THANK YOU MARK!, my 2nd place choice after the stunning 1990. This is still 5-10 years before peak, I think, but is beautifully composed, and shows pastis, black licorice, floral talc, black currants, and mostly resolved tannins in its 50 second finish. Flavors not defined by limestone terroir, but balanced and framed by it. A magnum of this held for 15 years will delight and confound tasters with the seductive pleasures offered with time, an awkward beauty in her youth peaking at 50!

While the CT drinking windows scared me, Mark Golodetz strongly encouraged me to open this sooner than later, and I'm happy he did - this wine freakin' slaps!
As always, minutes after opening I had to taste the wine, as I enjoy experiencing the development of a wine over the course of hours. Often on a nearly 25-year old wine the dominant factor immediately upon opening is funk. Any kind of funk - bottle funk, mushroom, non-stop iodine, etc. Not this wine, no, no, no! Gorgeous blast of dark red and blue fruits immediately greet your palate - explosive fruit, vibrant and bright, but bearing a beautifully weighted silky palate as well. The 'expected' funk comes through a bit at the finish (though after only 30 minutes that slight funk is already gone), but it's still fresh and clean overall, delivering a stony salinity, sharp graphite, and a slight hint of leather with a red cherry core.
I was introduced to Chateau Magdelaine by none other than Robert.A.Jr., who, along with Mark, celebrate it for its elegant rusticity. Unquestionably this is built for the long haul, showing complexity even now, with medium plus acidity, I still marvel at the quality and purity of the bright fruit it delivers now. The finish is incredibly long and strong, and linear - most of the tannins seem large and rounded, typical of Merlot that makes up most of the blend, but carry with them more of that beautiful fruit. Seamless from one tasting component to the next, this wine is beautifully made.
If you have this wine, I highly encourage you to try it now. I had planned to write this note over the course of hours, but it delivers so much now that I had much to say, all glowing. This is why I have loved - and still love - Bordeaux. Such a well-executed wine.
Not sure how long this will last, but I'll try to update with 'later' notes on it as well.

From a magnum. A bit of secondary fermentation was apparent in the decanter. So much so that it must have been the source of the bottle leak that resulted in my decision to prematurely open this. Flawed from brett for sure, but not undrinkable. The brett/barnyard did not dissipate for a couple days. Underneath all of that this still had very traditional bell pepper, bitter cherry, and soil notes on a long, tannic finish. Smooth edges to this. Not the greatest exemplar of this wine, but this is still complex and interesting.

Dinner at Dibbs's: Should have known better, Magdelaine from such a good vintage needs more time. A floral and elegant nose but on the palate it was rather muted even though it showed glimpses of its power. Had a savoury quality that gave way to a slightly bitter finish. This wine is no fun at the moment.

Full maturity. Made in a more tradition style than we have seen in the Right Bank since 2000. Nice plummy merlot fruit, mushroom, black pepper. Wood and tannins very well integrated. This is not at all showy or effusive but a very well made and classy St Emilion from a particularly good vintage in the Right Bank. I have 4 btls left of this that probably ought to be drunk up fairly soon.

Dinner at Vinci-Dave Dryoff visits town (Vinci, Chicago IL): Nose: The nose is elegant and perfumed with a real savory side, filled with red cherries, raspberries, licorice, leather, herbs, tobacco, black tea, roses, and violets. There is a freshness to the red fruits with excellent balance and depth.
Taste: The feel is Medium bodied with medium acidity and silky, medium+ tannins. There are some last bits of youth to the tannins while the feel is poised with red cherries, raspberries, leather, tobacco, black tea, roses, and violets.
Overall: This is a beautiful Magdelaine. It's hard to compare this to the 82 but this is a beautiful wine in its own right. There is excellent poise and balance with lovely red fruits.

deep purple red color, monolithic and massive nose, totally primary and of grand scale by Magdelaine standards, intense cloves, on the palate this is deceptively approachable like the 2008, cassis, blueberries, light pepper notes, positively electric despite being so closed- the tension is remarkable, superb length that is generous and full throughout the lengthy fragrant aftertaste, a long way to go and in the same class as the 2008 though this will likely be on a grander scale.

5/12. Excellent cork. Decanted 1 hour. Medium/deep garnet core, pale garnet rim. Nose remains quite youthful with lightly creamy red-toned fruit, spice, earth, some chalky mineral. Medium bodied, elegant, pure red fruit, contrasting light savoury edge, fine tannin, vibrant acidity, good length finish. Excellent even if it didn’t really set the pulse racing.

PnP Aromatics wonderful upon opening. Pretty, red fruited (candied cherry, blackberry). On th palate this is super clean, focused, and absolutely delicious. Fruit dominates over earthy character, with just a hint of rocky soil. Acidity and tannin are well balanced and present. This has a long life ahead but damn it’s tasty at the moment.

purchased recently from K&L, presumed ex-chateau. intact cork. PnP. Opaque ruby burgundy. Nose lightly herbal, green pepper, hint of tobacco. Palate light honey, strongly fruity -- oh still so young. Some herbal/tobacco leaf flavor. Lightly tannic on finish. Still a baby; with good provenance, could see this going the distance. Very nice. 93 pts

Vinetasters: Brown Bag (Skokie, IL): A classically proportioned, if a little ornery, Bordeaux. There's a bit of greenness thanks to the cabernet franc here, but it's very light. The fruit here is a little clamped down, and shows more black than red. It's earthy and dusty, and, as much as I hate to admit as much, Salil was right in saying that this wine was not yet ready. Good, but certainly in need of more time.
Lovely... Yup just lovely. needs a couple of hours of air to get going, but once its on it just keeps getting better, shy nose of black doris plums with depth and palate length for miles, proper wine for proper wine lovers, isnt anywhere near its peak but its lovely...Yup just lovely

Rich dark fruit encouragingly displaying more fruit than sweetness. Nose displays some high notes (eucalyptus, dark rose hips) but has a core of earth and rocks that should emerge further with bottle age. Still much too young, but should be a great wine in a decade. Consumed with soppressata pizza. 92+

This was totally off and disjointed for the first hour. Dark ruby color. Really dark fruit, lots of truffle, sous bois, and sweet tobacco. Medium-bodied. Started out with some heat on the finish, which eventually resolved. Finish a bit short, a bit tart. Tannins almost fully resolved. I am somewhat shocked to see the CT drinking window to be 2025-2075; if anything, this wine is nearing the end of its drinking window.

Fragrant nose of dark plums and smoky minerals. Rather full and rich with flavors of black fruits and graphite minerals. Dense and complex with high-pitched acids. Still tannic on the finish and slightly harsh but this is still young and seems to have the weight and material to balance out the acids in the long run. A big-boned Magdelaine that holds some promise for the future. 91+

“Merlot from a Bordeaux-perspective”-Tasting in June 2014, Flight 7, Wine 3 (blind). The wine was dark garnet in colour and offered blackberry, prune, some chocolate, leather and tobacco on the meaty nose. On the palate the wine showed blackberry, plum, some leather and some chocolate, paired with medium-level acidity and tannin and good length. The medium-bodied, medium-complex wine seemed very young for its age and less balanced than most of the other wines in this tasting.
NB: Checking my earlier tasting notes I realised that I already blind-tasted this wine about a year ago and already had doubts about the wine’s potential at that time.

Yes! This is a very fine, classically styled St Emilion. That it is almost entirely merlot seems hard to believe; there is no soft jammy fruit, glycerine, cocoa, or round flabby edges to speak of. It took an hour in the decanter to really hit its stride, but when it did it was really singing with black currant, licorice, forest floor, iron, blood, etc. Impeccably balanced (like most Right Banks in 98). Long finish. This is a real Bordeaux drinker's wine and it would not be appreciated at all by those who like New World wines. In fact my dinner companion, who is from Bordeaux, remarked "I am home". I would think sampling one btl of the next five every 2-3 years would be just fine.

„One Wine - Three Vintages“-Blind Tasting. Flight 6: Château Magdelaine. We only had two wines in this flight, the 1998 and the 2010. The 1998 (as all wines poured straight from bottle, without decanting) was very limited on the nose and palate and did not show well tonight, except for the very well-integrated, round tannin and its good balance. The 2010 was a completely different animal: It was medium to dark purple in colour, a very opulent wine, with intense oak flavours, medium-plus tannin and a green component in a positive sense. I actually hated it at first for its opulence and oakiness, but slowly learned to love it with aeration. I am not quite clear on the future of the 1998. The 2010, however, showed good potential, but clearly needs time settle.

Good quality St-Emilion of medium garnet color, the aromas are reasonably intense and complex, showing blackberry and dark plum, liquorice, savory, farmyard, toast and earth. Good acidity, the tannin is ripe and silky in texture, the wine has a medium body and having a feminine and fairly intense palate showing blackberry and dark plum, toast, cinnamon and wet leaves. Finishing with a fairly long length, the wine is ready to drink now and not intend for further ageing.

Restrained and slightly aloof at first, this expanded well after a few hours into a very pleasant blend of redcurrant, red cherry and plum flavours. Streamlined, sleek and pure, light years away from the more opulent RB wines, this is like a Right Bank Leoville Barton, which will probably appeal to fans of LB, not necessarily those of Monbousquet. I liked it very much - how refreshing not to have fruit tastes marred by oak.

Pop and pour. Nose isn't great. A little muted and musty. However palate is very good. Beautiful red & dark fruit (more dark cherry than cassis), fresh, a touch tight still but broadening out, some tiny maturing notes. Quite a nice spiciness to this, so guessing quite a bit of new oak. But still surprisingly fresh and young for a 14 year old wine! Mouthfeel is very good. Medium to full bodied. Excellent concentration. Lovely finish, if a little short though. It opens up a little with some decanting but I think this will be much more interesting in a few more years.

1998 Chateau Magdelaine & 2007 Domaine Leflaive Combettes (Bistro du Vin): Alcohol :: 13.5% Perfume, complex nose of cigar box, leather, earth, liquorice and sweet dark fruits core that accompany with hint of truffle. This med-full bodied Magdelaine is powerful with palate staining intensity, very rich and concentrated fruits on the palate, intense and complex, the tannin is mellow down and resulted in smooth mouth feel but a little bit rough edge and low acidity that seems lack a little bit of transparency. Juicy. slight sweet finished that is long and powerful, with autumn leaves aftertaste. BUy - Maybe.

Eleven 1998 St Emilions and a Lone Pomerol. Maybe some Yquem too (Bethesda, MD): The most enigmatic wine of the tasting. It doesn't represent any right bank typiticy, dare I say, any Bordeaux typicity. It has a nose of confectionary and candied fruit, with bright punchy red fruit, akin to a Crozes-Hermitage filled with Granache and Syrah. It is light on its feet and vibrantly bright with refreshing acidity. Nobody could have pegged this as 98 Right Bank blind. Definitely tasted of Granache. Any thoughts? Potentially flawed bottle.

Medium/deep ruby core, narrow pale garnet rim. Initially restrained, opening out to show lovely pure cranberry and raspberry fruit, some plumminess, floral and vanilla notes and an attractive slightly bitter earthy edge. No more than medium bodied on the palate, pure creamy red fruit, vanilla, firm but very fine tannins, decent depth and exceptional length on the mid-palate, good acidity carries a very good length complex finish with some herbally notes. Light and elegant in the mouth, but also with the depth and structure to improve. Lovely.

Medium/deep ruby core, pale ruby rim. A little reticent on the nose, sweet plum and strawberry fruit, understated with vanilla and a few earthy notes. No more than medium bodied on the palate with ripe strawberry fruit, vanilla, elegant and seamless but not hugely intense on the mid-palate, some savouriness starting to develop on the good length, fresh finish. Tannins are fine and seem fully integrated and this is certainly drinking, however previous experience suggests it will develop and open out further with more time.

Underneath all of that this still had very traditional bell pepper, bitter cherry, and soil notes on a long, tannic finish. Smooth edges to this. Not the greatest exemplar of this wine, but this is still complex and interesting.

Aromatics wonderful upon opening.
