Cork in good shape maybe a half inch run. Light red body no orange on rim. Tar. Damp earth, cigar box and dark fruit nose. On the palate sour cherry, lavender and a raspberry note on the finish after 4 hours open. Initial fruit was dark plums and a good match for veal marsala. The tannin is tart and somewhat drying with only a subtle tingly finish. Mature and enjoyable now. Next day update: apologies for description of wine as still red. Seen in daylight there is significant bricking.

Essence of black plums, lavender, violets, and cigar tobacco aging in a cedar humidor. The tannins are big and have a very lengthy and pleasant grip. Nebbiolo really shows its greatness when in the right hands, and this Barolo really shines a spotlight on high quality production. Nearing the end of its life; drink now or very soon.

Decanted for two hours. Attractive notes of black cherry, violets, tar come through. The wine is fully bodied, rounded and bursting with flavor but the tannins are mouth puckering and haven’t seemed to diminish over time. Will more time resolve this. Possibly but it’s also possible that the tannins overtake the fruit in the next several years making this undrinkable.

Fantastic after 1.5 hr decant. Paired with salmon and beef with chocolate dessert. Had an initial vegetal nose, graphite and wet dirt, but some background pepper and plums. Mouth feel was full and subdued with tannins still present but very muted. Needs to be paired with food to bring out the essences. Had smoke char, vegetal and blackberry notes with tobacco and chocolate lingering taste. Very enjoyable.

Decanted two hours. This nose is black cherry and cigar box. The palate shows prominent somewhat harsh tannins which are still unresolved. The palate is a bit rustic with flavors of black cherry, tar, cigar box and spice. Wait for five years and see if this improves but it’s possible it may not come around.

Bought on April 2010 so almost 10 years ago and kept in my cellar since then. Nose is highly aromatic with truffle, violets, tar and earth. On the palate it is quite grippy but not as brutal it must have been as 5 or 10 years ago. There is really nice tart red cherry with some licorice, raspberry and leather. Went really well with a steak. Can age another 10 years if you like your wine with more mature notes

Pop and pour, but that was a mistake. At 14, this is still a baby. Good blood orange and red raspberry on the nose. Excellent acidity, and good fruit on the palate, but the tannin is so structured...feels like it could clean your bumper. Will there still be fruit when this tannin softens?

Decanted for one hour. The nose is flowers with earthy notes. The palate is more structured than I would have expected with still a reasonable bit of tannin. There are nice flavors of cherry, blackberry, smoked meats and spices in a full bodied, structured frame. This is well made but its a bit chunky and a little rustic. Not sure it’s going to get better with time but let’s see.

Pale garnet color. Dried flowers on the nose. Medium-full body. Red fruit flavors with good acidity and balance. Mid-palate slightly lacking. Chewy tannins and a long finish. Decanted three hours, served with meat sauce spaghetti. I wouldn't drink this wine without food.

Tasted blind. Interesting non-fruit aromas. Tar and licorice. Roses and candied cherries. Big, concentrated, and serious. Tannins predominate. Tarry and bitter, but there’s also a pretty rose component and some sour cherry. Promising, but definitely could use more time to age. Rating: 92.
Guess the wine: Barolo. ~8 years old.

This is definitely a wine that needs food. It has some of the classic components of a good Barolo, but is very tannic and somewhat simplistic. Needed a 1-2 hour decant and was better on day two. I think it needs a few more years in the bottle to reach its potential.

Pretty mix of roses, tar, menthol, and licorice. Tannins are strong and uncomfortably dry in the throat, but overall the wine strikes me as soft and elegant (for Barolo/Barbaresco). In an ideal world, I would give it a few more years.

Nose is rich with candied cherries and a subcutaneous wet black earth, very notable old world structure underlie the attack. The palate is very Italian funk forward. Tannins and acidity are still quite chewy, definitely a food wine. Paired with olive and mozzy flatbreads really brings out the fruit. Lots of great depth to this wine. Probably capable of aging another 10 years, a great example of Barolo, Pio Cesare is always a great choice.

Sexy, ruby appearance. Deep, penetrating bouquet of cherries and raspberries over earthy notes of eucalyptus and leather. The palate has an insatiable feral quality about it, yet it's complex and expressive, cultured and pure, with fathomless breadth, depth, and balance. Exudes elegance, classic structure, and a beautiful sense of place. Vibrant red fruit and youthful grip lace the long finish. A wine worthy of its terroir and pedigree.

Good Barolo. Rather feminine side which I like and prefer. Nice cherry and uplifting freshness. The tannin is still here but feels like dry bones and I am not sure if this will integrate with the fruits which the latter is actually starting to give way to the secondary elements. This is very pretty and even better with nice juicy steak. Yes, satisfying and very elegant indeed. Cheers, ps; a couple of hours later this showed a lot more of good wet earth, dried rose, black pepperish, and had gained in depth. However the tannin was still persistent, nevertheless providing fresh energy. Very enjoyable throughout.

Surprisingly dark fruit. Licorice. Prunes. Cherries. Tannins settled down. Seems a tad extracted and full bodied and new world for my tastes. Not a bad wine by any means but I don't get the typicity that others speak of. For $45 it's a buy though.

1 Hour decant. Tannins have moderated a bit since my last tasting of this wine i.e. a good thing though they are still dominant. Black licorice and dark fruits on the nose and palate. Medium/long finish. Most enjoyable showing yet for this wine (in my ~8 bottle history).

Surprisingly developed on the nose with hints of cabbage, prunes and funk. Tobacco, dark chocolate, wood, barnyard and some stalky aromas follow suit.
Very astringent and lean on the palate with a high acidity, dry fruit, distinct tannins and a light to medium body. Very good length and good intensity. A Barolo in my style, but I wouldn't keep this around for too long if I had any bottles.

Decanted 3 hours. Crimson with brick red/brown rim. Spicy, very aromatic nose. Taut, elegant, tannins resolved. Strong savory elements, dark black cherry. Developing tertiary flavors of plum, pencil box. Drinking well but can go longer, balanced, long finish.

Popped and poured at Battersby. Initially a touch too new world and primary on the palate (and nose to a lesser extent). After 1-2 hours it became strongly tannic, then finally found its happy place at hour 2.5. The tannins were still notable but it became more well balanced with some acid and dark fruit (and eventually licorice). I'll wait another 3 years for the next one.

The wine was decanted for about 3 hrs. The nose wasn't overly intense- savoury with bright red fruits and hints of tar and roses. The palate was more concentrated with dark and red fruits, good length and some firm, but silky and well integrated, tannins. A nice wine that can last for a few years longer.

Popped and poured from split. Color is lighter red, pure through to the rim. On the nose, there are odors of rosehips, slight tar, and some hot alcohol on the backend. In the mouth, the wine is smooth, with a delicious flavor that should pair well with food. The finish is not particularly notable. Overall, this is enjoyable now and will likely benefit from further time. 92 points.

The nose at first has some complexity which then mystically disappears; leaving room for a clean and pure cherry driven flavour profile with some fresh figs, plum cake as well. tannins are plentiful and finegrained, in line with acidity. hold on to this if you don't have more than one...

Tasted along Vietti 05 - This wine has evolved beautifully and is drinking very well now. Amazing delicacy – has a cherry fruit nose with nutmeg and x-mass spices. Very feminine and supple and much less brooding than the Vietti. Layers of fruit, spice and earthy loam. Long finish.

I thought this was fantastic, black tea and flowers and dried cherry on the nose, a bright mouthful of red fruit, plum, cherry, and pomegranate, with some pleasant earthy notes, particularly on the finish, which lingered quite nicely. It grew more tannic with time, as we finished our meal, so it may be that it calls for some fat to balance those tannins. I didn't expect that much from the 2005, so this one overdelivered for me. Good value for Barolo.

A bit austere and tannic; the tannins softened over a few hours but the flavors did not develop. Lots of alcohol on the nose with some undertones of cedar. Taste seems to be somewhat thin with mild flavors of red fruit like pomegranate, pencil lead, cedar and vanilla. Maybe this will develop more with time, but we don't see it.

Medium garnet colour. Pronounced smokey vanilla on the nose together with pungent spice (liquorice) and some red fruit (plums). Still some time before being ready to drink.

Wines of Italy (Farpointe Cellar): The nose was wonderful. It started with a nice mint aroma that filled out with black cherry, spice, and licorice. The palate was way too tannic. It overpowered all the flavors it had. There was some cherry and spice, a bit of licorice, and a touch of mint on the finish.

Needed about two hours of decant time to soften up the tannins but once it was ready it was fabulous. The wine exhibited aromas of leather and licorice with flavors of dried berry and plum. Tannins are still very present so I suspect this has a very long life ahead of it. This will definitely be better within a few years.

When just opened I could barely find the nose. Needs time to open up. But when it does, smells like flowers after a summer rain, mixed with pine tree essence. Makes my tongue stand up on end right now, like I need to scrape the wine from my mouth before I need to drink again. This wine needs food.

Double decanted for almost two hours. The wine has bright and clear ruby colour. Quite fragrant nose initially when poured into decanter with plum, red fruit and spices flavours. On the palate, the wine has very strong tannins, probably because the wine has gone through a very long maceration period of 28 days. Having said so, tannins are quite fine and is perfectly acceptable to me. The wine also has very pronounced but nicely done bitterness which I like quite a lot. Despite the fact that 2005 is a difficult vintage for Barolo with lots of rain and quite cold, this is a well made and solid Barolo. The wine would certainly benefit for a few more years of bottle ageing.

An interesting bottle with some nice floral notes on the nose. A slight bit of earth mixed with red fruits and fairly tannic on the back end. The 04 vintage of this wine was out of this world. The 05, not so much. Pretty good but go for the 04 if you can.

very closed when first opened. the nose started to open after an hr of decanting. first taste was 1.5hrs after being opened and was very angular with flavours being very sharp as well as the finish. last glass was 3.5hrs after being opened and it was starting to mellow and the flavours were blending better, however this still needs more time. could be as high as a 93pt rating over time

92 points.

Decanted for two hours. The wine had brownish red outer edge and a muted nose. It had the taste of an older wine though the fruit remained and the finish was long.

Colour:very clear, ruby red, tinge of orange at edges
Nose: More jammy than most Barolos which is typical of this producer. Hints of dried pine needles and black currants
Taste: Tannins are tight but not overwhelming. More black fruits and leathery tones. Med to long finish.

The nose at first has some complexity which then mystically disappears; leaving room for a clean and pure cherry driven flavour profile with some fresh figs, plum cake as well. tannins are plentiful and finegrained, in line with acidity. hold on to this if you don't have more than one...

On the palate this is dry with high levels of tannin, high acidity, medium-full body, leathery flavours with some sourness and some red fruit. Looong finish.
