Beautiful nose, with lots of ripe dark red berries and some soft smoky notes. On the palate ripe red and dark berries are dominant too. Quite concentrated but not overdone. Alcohol is integrated nicely. Medium (+) bodied with a medium acidity. Beautiful fruit depth and overall complexity. Fantastic overall balance! The finish is very long and quite dry. This is in an amazing drinking window now and just needs a quick decanting. Drink from now on until 2030. (IG)

Tasted alongside '09, '15, '16, '17 and '18 at a Ch. La Conseillante dinner at restaurant BOCA in Hickory NC with vineyard managing director & winemaker Marielle Cazaux in attendance - at this point of maturation rated #3 for me out of that group behind the '09 and '17. A master class in R bank merlot-based Bdx wines and La Conseillante in particular was had that night. This vintage is 86% merlot / 14% CF and the percentages vary slightly vintage to vintage with the merlot being roughly ~ 80-85% and CF making up the rest. Entering a mature drinking window and thus drink or hold. If drunk now would recommend at least 2-3 hours open in bottle or a 60-90 minute decant in decanter or glass. With proper cellaring this has at least 2+ decades left so leaning on the hold. A "classic" cooler year R bank Bdx wine. Paired beautifully with braised short ribs and mushrooms. Dark reddish purple with some peripheral bricking starting to develop, mature, balanced, softening mouth feel but very full bodied, fruit forward but not to the same level as the younger wines, tannins integrating with oak present but hardly noticeable (we found out this is on purpose, very much their style and intent) and a lovely long lingering aftertaste. Nose dark and soft with dark stone fruit, garrigue, vanilla and enough of a hint of white pepper on the tail to make your nose itch a bit. Flavor profile evolving into a classic R bank Bdx profile with dark stone fruit, crushed blue- and blackberries, coffee, leather, black pepper, truffle and a hint of smoke on the finish. Ridiculously good, highly recommend despite the price point - well worth the money if high end Bdx is your thing and I can't believe this was my #3 given how truly excellent it is.

Château La Conseillante dinner & Kabinett tasting (Groot-Ammers, Netherlands): Typical 2008 freshness, crushed red berries, hint of incense, still quite primary, slowly developing hints of undergrowth and truffle, finely grained tannins, clear and transparent, very good but not great length. Classic Pomerol.

Excellent shiney dark red color. Nose a bit silent, but cherry and a little prunes appear as well as leather. Taste is medium long, a bit dry at end. More elegant and polished, than giving wow effect. Expected more, but also taken early. No signs of decline.

Tasted, over dinner, alongside the 2001, this wine had the edge on the night, but I suspect they will jockey for position over the coming decade. The 2008 is beautifully fruit forward, with an amazing nose. Great length, mouth coating and easy to drink too fast.

Chateau La Conseillante Vertical with Marielle Cazaux (Au Petit Bouchon): Lightest of the flight. Did not make a big impression on me except on account of a musky cedar dominating the fruit. In a vertical like this there is always one vintage that's good for a sip and then it's time to move on, life's too short. Voila, la 2008...

Chateau La Conseillante Dinner with Marielle Cazaux (Le Cafe Descartes at the French Embassy): Expressive nose displaying the 08 red fruit, cherry, cherry pie, plum, a hint of stem, truffle, cedar and earth. Medium concentration, bright sweet red fruit, bright acidity, strong stemmy mineral, slightly coarse tannins and a medium to long bright red fruit and cedar driven finish. A very unique expression, different from the others. It will need another decade to reach the peak.

La Conseillante Vertical Tasting (French Embassy - Washington, DC): A good wine, it was just an outlier in a lineup of excellent ones. The director had tasted all wines before and deemed them correct, and while this was not flawed in any way, it was just muted and less expressive, by far, than the other vintages. Spicy, dark, peppery, earthy nose. Closed on the palate, shut down, the dusty tannins show themselves strongly, while the other elements hide underneath. Maybe another ten years will bring this one together.

From half bottle. Served after 30 min. decant. Exotic nose with macerated fruits and a hint of truffle. In the mouth the wine appears completely ready with excellent mouthfill where all elements have integrated well. Good length. A really enjoyable bottle I wouldn't store much longer in this format simply because it is so lovely right now.

Truffle infused red fruits with green leaf, plums and mint. The wine is a bit strict on the palate. The attack is soft and fruity, but there is some austerity in the finish, once the dark, red fruits have started to fade. Give it 3-5 years in the cellar to soften, and it should be a better experience..

Joanne Bordeaux Trip 2018 (Bordeaux): The nose was dark. rich. and spicy black fruits, plum, looming dark floral tones and crushed stone. Velvety textures on the palate, gave way to cream blackberry, currants, violets, brown sugar, and spice. It was long, dark and structured throughout the finish, yet already drinking well.

Weekly tasting group RWP #290: Bordeaux Vertical and Horizontal (@ VD): Beautiful bouquet with cherries, red and dark berries, vanilla and some green impressions. On the palate chocolate, toast, a lot of acidity and sticky tannin and bitterness. This bottle seems to be more backward than the two I tasted in 2017. This bottle was still too young. No problem cellaring this for another 8 - 10+ years. For tonight 93+.

With just weeks to go before the wine hits 10 years of age, the earthy, cherry and floral notes are in full force. With effort, there are scattered truffles to be dug up as well. Med/full bodied, and on the fresher side, the ripe, red, earthy, silky fruits are starting open up in the finish. Another year or two should add more nuance and complexity here.

Conseillante Master Class (Sherry Lehmann NYC (59th & Park)): Another favorite of the night. Initial reaction was a bit harsh, but it seemed to settle down some. Maybe just a hint of the alcohol that I got on some of the others. Lots of cherry. Some pepper. Can see the mint that our MC pointed out. High acidity. This was just much much much too young to me. There's this haunting flavor to this that comes out with a bit of time. I think it might be the black truffle that the wine maker referenced (got a bit in the 2001 as well). Love it. It's a nice savoryness that is just very satisfying.

For an appellation that still produces some rural merlot-based moonshine (/sarc), La Conseillante really deserves a special award for the consistent refinement and exquisiteness of their wines over the last decade. Voluminous, streaming, aromatic fragrances of blackberry, plums, red and black cherry, melon, anise, mint, milk chocolate. Elegant silky palate of red and black cherry, liquorice, orange peels, maracuja, apple, red forest berries, sage, chalk unfold beautifully encompassed by a perfectly judged acidity. Very serene and effortless and exquisite. Not as big, and rich as the 2005/2009/2010, but it still shares the same tempting finesse of those vintages.

The 2008 La Conseillante is clearly an underrated vintage for this estate, and perhaps its relatively firm—but refined—tannic core and bright acids made it difficult to assess justly in its youth. The wine is still young and in need of a decade more in the cellar to blossom, but it is a very classic Conseillante with the signature gravelly soil tones and black raspberry fruit, with the lovely violet top notes that seem to be lost in more roasted vintages like 2009. On the palate wine is very classically structured and balanced, the tannins being firm but not drying or green, and the new oak nicely done.

perhaps this has been slightly overscored by the pros relative to 2005/09/10? licorice on the nose. there is a lack of fruit on the palate. pencil lead on the nose/palate. tannins are discreet but overall the wine appears a bit closed today.

One of the big and important names of the Right bank. Really amazing nose - fruity, minty, grassy all interplaying and flirting w your senses....V fresh and complex. Bodes well. The minty flavors continue onto the palate. Refinement and balance are the dominant themes. Smooth, carefully calibrated mouthfeel but some bitter tannins kicked in at the end, showing its youth. Long, satisfying finish that lingers on (9.0/10). http://sgbordeaux.blogspot.com/2011/09/la-conseillante-2008.html

Opened a bottle on the sly a few days after taking delivery to see what the 2008s are like. (I missed UGC). Gun powder, anise, motor oil and cotton candy on the nose. (Very intriguing). Wonderful watermelon juice freshness, ripe raspberry, tart boysenberry, limestone on the palate. Very long, fading tastes that do not metamorphose very much, with only a tingle of black licorice on the mid-tongue after about 30 seconds. Extremely refined and noble tannic structure, with velvety, even silky entry. Some rawness when compared to the 2005, which is a quite alot better, to be honest, which has a very different nose and flavor profile (many more berries, blue and red) and just much more complete and ready than this. I have always thought that Conseillante is best enjoyed young, but this 2008 might force me to wait a year or two for it to mellow. The tannins do make you pucker, and there is a rawness that really needs to tame down. But, overall, this is recognizable as a Conseillante, and a fascinating wine.

Purpler fruits than expected, rounded on the nose with the tiniest hint of greenness. Quite different from the 07 in style; the graphite/herbal character that I liked in the ’07 has apparently been thrown over for a more rounded, “international” style. The result is that a wine that was formerly distinctive is now just another one of the pack. 90.

UGC 2008 Bordeaux (The Drake, Chicago IL): nose: extremely deep and well layered nose already with waves of asian spices, spice box tones, perfumes, violets, red fruits, red cherries, and a good amount of hi-toned berries
taste: absolutely gorgeous medium feel with medium acidity and silky tannins. Well layered and deep tones of asian spices, perfumes, incense, violets, red fruits and hi-toned berries all balance very well together
overall: this was an absolute stunner for me. Extremely balanced on both the nose and palate with great depth on both as well. This can turn into a real knee buckler with time and is sublime already

This suave wine opens with floral, black raspberry, oak, dark cherry and spice box aromas. With textures of silk and velvet, this supple wine feels great as it graces your palate. I would have liked a little more concentration. But this is a very pretty wine. It's in the style of their 1998 and 2001.

Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux 2008 Tasting (The Barker Hangar – Santa Monica, CA): Tremendous complexity and purity on the nose with menacing aromas of currant leaf, flowers, plum, and boysenberry. Firm but approachable on the palate with dense complex fruit that exhibits black and purple tones. Although quite gripping initially the texture turns wonderful juicy and that quality really creates a fitting foil to the dark floral fruit. This again leans more towards the structured end of the Pomerol spectrum but there is a lot of potential here. 93+

Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux 2008 Vintage Tasting (Santa Monica Airport Barker Hangar, Santa Monica, California): Deep ruby. Restrained nose, putting forth subtle aromas of raspberries and mint. Medium-bodied on the palate, with medium acidity, medium sweet tannins and red fruit on the palate. The middle palate thins and the finish is short. I cannot be sure that the bottle from which my taste was poured was not "off". Based upon the nose, it is quite possible that the bottle was popped immediately prior to my pour and it simply needed more breathing time. The middle palate is, however, more problematic in my mind. Several other tasters (including a Master Sommelier) independently voiced similar impressions. Drink now-12/17.

Attended the UGC tasting at the palace. Room too dark to gauge the color of the wines, except to say that they all seemed reasonably dark at this stage.
To generalize, I found many of the Saint Emilions acidic on the palate, which I thought a bit surprising given the high concentration of Merlot. Conversely, the Pomerols – also dominated by Merlot – seemed to fair much better. Not sure why there was this difference for me other than to surmise that terrior and date of harvest must have been key in 2008. Seemed to concentrate on the right bank wines this evening, thought I did find the Margaux region a notch above other left bank wines. I would cellar these 2008 wines tasted tonight for up to 10 years.
(1) Chateau Clinet – 92 points. WON. Very nice nose with round berry flavors and lovely finish. No astringency here. 85% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. Oak flavors were nicely integrated in the wine. The chateau employed 60% new (some with medium toast) and 40% one-year barrels. Nicely balanced. (PS 4/11 Decanter: 4-stars 17.3 pts.) (2) Chateau Beauregard – 91 points. Never had this wine before. The nose was really lovely, revealing rich qualities of berries, chocolate and caramel. 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc. (PS 4/11 Decanter: 4-stars, 16.9 pts.) (3) Chateau La Cosiellante - 91 points. Nice nose, but not as expressive as the Beauregard; however, the Conseillante was quite well balanced. Good berry flavors. A pleasure to drink. It may outlive the Beauregard, but who knows.(PS 4/11 Decanter: 4-stars 17.3 pts.) (4) Domaine de Chevalier Rouge – 91 points. Lovely nose with hints of chocolate. Very good balance both on the nose and palate. Fairly high percentage of Petite Verdot (10%), though I don’t know if this historically an anomaly. Expected a little more rusticity in this wine, based on tasting older vintages in the past. Instead it t possessed more sophistication than I anticipated. (5) Chateau Kirwan – 90 points. Both the nose and palate were very nice and offered black currant and other berry flavors. Wine was well balanced and can best be described as a traditional Bordeaux styled quality. Best for current to seven year’s out consumption.

Bordeaux 2008 (Bordeaux): A very fresh nose with floral notes, white pepper and some hints of fine milk chocolate. The palate is juicy, even sumptuous, with good sap and concentration, also giving off a Cabernet Franc-driven mint freshness (86% Merlot and 14% Cabernet Franc). The 90% new oak is well integrated û a very fine effort from this remarkable estate, but, again, I do not get the same depth as in 2006, nor the peerless balance and sheer poetry of the 2005! 92-95

(PS 4/11 Decanter: 4-stars 17.3 pts.)
(2) Chateau Beauregard – 91 points. Never had this wine before. The nose was really lovely, revealing rich qualities of berries, chocolate and caramel. 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc. (PS 4/11 Decanter: 4-stars, 16.9 pts.)
(3) Chateau La Cosiellante - 91 points. Nice nose, but not as expressive as the Beauregard; however, the Conseillante was quite well balanced. Good berry flavors. A pleasure to drink. It may outlive the Beauregard, but who knows.(PS 4/11 Decanter: 4-stars 17.3 pts.)
(4) Domaine de Chevalier Rouge – 91 points.
