  • the color is hardly golden at all, there's still a bit of a green tint, this is acting like a 3 to 5 year old, not a 22 year old! The balance and youthfulness here is unreal, beautiful citrus and apples, fresh flowers, airy spice and honey. Long and elegant finish, just a touch sweet, this is a drinking Auslese through and through, so balanced and fresh. If tasting blind I really wonder if I'd say it was a 5 year old kabinett... such a memorable wine, thank you

  • With Zak and Megan in the Catskills. Everything I could want an classic Mosel Riesling to taste like with gentle citrus and apple fruit tinged with herbal, floral, and mineral accents, and some savoury development. It's remarkably light on its feet with restrained sweetness and bright acids - it feels lighter and more dry than most modern Kabinett (let alone Spätlese), but the balance and depth here are perfect.

  • Very gentle. Nose shows green apple, a bit of sweet lime, sugar, honeysuckle and a touch of minerality. Palate is similar - I keep waiting for the acid to come up and grip but it doesn't. This is very elegant aged Riesling that's lacking a bit of acid and intensity. No formal scores but I'd put this at 15/20.

  • Pat's note nails this. This is an outstanding wine, a combination of the restraint and delicate touch I expect from Merkelbach, and the intensity and finesse of the 2001 vintage. Just a fantastic bottle of Riesling, and I am glad to have a couple more in the cellar.

  • This is a really nice wine. White fruit and apples along with stones and honey. All too cold when it was opened but when it warmed up a bit, it was rocking.

  • Herbal aromas and lime, and this has aged into a lithe and focused bottle. An Auslese drinking lighter than many Kabinetts of recent vintages.

  • Delightful; closer to Spätlese than Auslese as Spencer said, but this is hard to turn away from. Understated and elegant, full of yellow fruits, apples and peaches accented with honey, slate, herbal elements and the start of developing smoky notes in a beautifully balanced package that slowly unravels flavour after flavour with time and patience.

  • water yellow. Very closed nose and mouth. Didn't really open up much throughout the evening. Richness came off as Spatlese. Don't touch for another 4-6 years.

  • Tasted at the "Around the World" tasting at my house. David nailed this wine blind as a Mosel, but he thought it was a spatlese rather than auslese. It's definitely on the light side for an auslese, but I found it to be complex and very nice. Bright straw color. Complex nose with hints of both apple and lime. Similar flavors, as well as honey and a bit of brown sugar on the palate. Long, lingering finish. I really liked this wine. It's not an ager, but for the next ten years, this should be beautiful.
