Brought by Andrew to Vivat Bacchus. Dark fuited again, spice, some meat and balsam. Sweet plum, florals. This is lovely, melded tannins, rich yet with lovely contrasting acids, good length finish. Drinking beautifully - now and next 5 years or so.

Very dark colored for a 2004 especially compared to the barolo at sat next to. There's a cherry note, a little brett, liqueur finish. It shows like an Italian wine and that color led me to believe that there was some Cabernet blended in here or maybe Syrah. Nope, all sangiovese.

Brunello 2004 Horisontal (My House): Clean/Pure intense cherry fruit with, for me, a perfect mature balance. It has a lovely piercing young acidic cherry fruit combined with the aged flavors of leather, wet leaves and manure. A stunning performance and a wine in a very nice complex balance.

This is absolutely stunning right now! Sour cherry fruit and a touch of sewer and wet leaves but still maintaining a great balance between youth and age. It is amazingly lush and easy to drink and the tannins are very integrated. Stunning wine and it seems to be at its peak right now but it will stay here for a long time. 94-95p

Ein never ending Abgang.

Popped and poured. Nice nose of violets, tobacco and herbs. The palate is balanced, restrained and classic. Black currant, black cherry, tobacco and olives come through. This is a very correct brunello that doesn’t show much flash or sophistication but is in a good place right now.

Followed over several hours. The wine was decanted slowly and just kept cold in the decanter.
0h: Dark and sweet cherry fruit on the nose with a touch of dirt. Shows a lovely intensity and starting to show a bit of age. Still very young on the palate with dark cherry fruit with a touch of sweetness. The fruit is still protruding and it shows very little age on the palate. It is a wine with its own dark and brooding style but so far it is very impressive with the depth of flavor, intensity and balance. It has really gotten back on track and is really showing a lot of potential. It can still keep for a long time but it does taste really nice right now! 93p
5h: Similar to before but with even more intensity and freshness. The fruit is very primary on the nose. Lush and fresh dark cherry fruit on the palate that is creamy and intense. Even more fruit depth and it is even darker and leaning towards blackberries but without loosing its freshness. The additional air have given it more balance and intensity and overall I am quite impressed. The tannins are still young and rough and the wine could easily improve over the next few years. However, it is still very nice right now and offers a lovely drinking experience! 93-94p

Eher bald trinken. Jetzt aber mit Luft sehr schön!!

Eclectica at Table, Donkey and Stick (Chicago, IL): Fantastic Brunello, with a nose that is chock full of herbs, cherries, cough syrup, and earth. Large-scaled on the palate with a really plummy and generous richness, but also some floral tones that add delicacy to this huge wine. Good stuff -- pretty sure this will be remembered as one of my gateway wines into Brunello.

This bottle was clearly a bit less exciting than the previous one. This probably was the one that I didn’t buy on release but in a wineshop a few years later.
Still a very nice Brunello, but as if it is a bit past peak.

Medium ruby colour with some hints of amber at the rim. Beautiful aromas of ripe black fruit evolving with some cherry, cedar and leather. Full bodied with smooth, mouth coating, tannins that are much more integrated than my last tasting of this wine. Great balance with some sweetness of fruit and fresh acidity. The finish is verly long and remains fresh. It definitely deserves a notch up.
Considering the lively showing and that there is some solid structure left I estimate the drinking window to be significantly longer that I thought last time. This is some very classic Brunello of a great vintage, drink now - 2029.

Really drinking quite well right now; The nose is wide open, with savory tones of red fruits, herbs and earthy tones; While the palate is fairly concentrated, the tannins are fairly silky at this point, suggesting this is in a prime drinking window

Lush darker slightly sweet red fruit to start with deep rhubarb and some earth. Tannins/acidity on the finish are mostly lost in the fruit. More lean and traditional on day two and the tannins a bit more noticeable. Almost too big for the pasta until the meat arrived off the grill. Really good for this style.

At Sagardi with Andrew and Fletcher. Deep/oqaque ruby. Nose is aromatic, dark fruited, spice. Lovely purity, touch of smoke. Very complex. Medium/full bodied, mouth-filling, dark, savoury fruit, with a fine but firm tannic backbone, lovely vibrant acidity, expands nicely on the grippy, long finish. Lovely, drinking well but with plenty in hand.

Book Club - Grand Finale: Rustic nose with a little horse, let's say some pony since it wasn't distracting and was kind of cute. Classic red cherry, good acidity. Tannins were rounded out. Gentle and nimble Sangiovese at this stage.

Does not show much age. Classic brunello nose with a hint of cedar. Palate is smooth and full bodied with forrest floor and well integrated tannins. Medium bodied and medium length. Excellent brunello which drinks very well now, but will keep and develop for some years to come. For me to be more excited it would have needed a bit more of everything (body, intensity, length). I will drink mine over the coming five years. 3 = very good

A Casual Monday Night in Toronto (Fine Wine Reserve, Toronto, ON): (tasted blind) Pours quick inky dark in colour, no bricking at all.Quite a whiff of Brett off the bat on this one. The nose reveals animal stable, wet old leather, dark cherry, blackberry and black currant. The palate shows huge structure with a lot of acid and a massive wall of tannin. Still super young. The brett and mouthfeel give this a traditional feel, though the fruit is dark and ripe. My guess was that this was less than 5 years old so clearly it hasn't budged. If I owned some of these I would be waiting at least 10 more years .

Decanted for two hours. Really enjoyable Brunello that was a great match with Osso Buco. I am a fan of the Lisini style which in my mind is a bit more elegant, old-world and feminine than some of the bigger, more modern producers.

this is a great wine - powerful but also elegant - you feel that the tannins and acidity are starting to soften and get to a nice balance - will still take some years - I will wait at least 2 years before drinking this - I think there still is a lot of potential lots of nice red fruits cherries. Good solid after taste - think this wine will end up around 94 points.

The robe on this one was reddish-brown with a nose and palate that was somewhat closed. Day 2, this showed its best with dried cherry, herbs, oak and a bit of cocoa. However, some grippy tannins and structure of the wine overwhelmed. May be in a transition stage, but once the tannins fully resolve, still hard to envision a compelling wine will emerge.

I decanted the wine for two hours, poured it back into the bottle and followed it over a period of three days. The wine was medium ruby in colour and threw some deposit in the bottle. It offered cherry, earth, tobacco, sandalwood, dust and anise on the nose. On the dense palate the medium-bodied wine showed red fruit, cherry, rhubarb, earthy notes, mushroom, mocha, anise and some vanilla, paired with high acidity, medium-plus to high fine tannin and very good length. A solid Brunello, but it did not have the precision and class of the 2001. I liked it best on day two.

very pure red cherry and black raspberry goes on thru the mid palate without being heavy; sweet/tart fruit, rhubarb, earth, mineral; still young and a bit primary but is one of my fave 2004s to date.

Nice and open on the nose right out of the bottle with the classic kirsch tones and some liquorish, a bit of earth and perfectly integrated oak! The palet was smooth and in total balance and had the same kirsch/liquorish tones as the nose so the red line was there all the way and also on the finish where the purity of the fruit really shows and here the earthy tones shows again mixing it up perfectly! It is a blast right now and it will evolve even more within the next 5-10 years!

The 2005 is good. 2004 was okay. Decanted for an hour which apparently was not enough time. Tart cherry, foresty notes on midpalate. Lack of defined structure or finish.

Balanced earthy (but not funky) and stewed red fruits. A vein of bright acidity makes this go wonderfully with food. Cinghiale would be an amazing pairing. Great representation of Brunello.

Weekly tasting group #014; Sangiovese (@ RvG): Garnet red. Beautiful and already a bit developed bouquet with ripe fruits and a touch of earthiness. On the palate red fruits, a lot of spiciness, some chocolate, firm acidity and bitterness and soft tannin. Beautiful and complex wine entering its maturity stage now. This will still be a beauty 5 years from now and probably will even improve a bit/show more complexity.

Removed from cellar, popped, breathed in bottle 90 minutes, consumed over next 90. Consistent with previous notes. Traditional Brunello, drinking wonderfully now, love the nose, will likely improve, but no need to wait.

Left to breathe in the bottle for 3 hours. Cherry and floral accents on the nose. Medium to medium plus body with cherry fruit, cedar and some minerality. The finish was a little clipped with soft tannins. This wine did not show well tonight. It came across as a bit thin and dry. Maybe it suffered by being drunk alongside some quite powerful wines. Will try this again in a few years and try it in isolation.

So, maybe they've planed the old bottis a bit at Lisinis. There's some grilled meat in there, some serious spice that's sending signals of wood. Still, this is a traditional, old school Brunello, that's just plain lovely. Licorice, violets, a fruit so fresh in the cherry mode with shades of black and red currant. Flowers sail over a gravelly road, the acidity - that has a touch of apple - keeps the taste phone ringing for ever. The tannins are ripe and round, but come with a grip. This is a style I love. I wish more producers went down this road in stead of trying to turn Sangiovese into a goody store where you mix sweet-sour cherries with dark chocolate. Not far from extraordinary. I think this is in the drinking widow, but there's no rush.

Wow this is a nice wine on a Thursday afternoon. Beautiful nose for such a young wine. 'Old World' all the way. Nose follows palate with complex tobacco, earth and damp leaves, cedar and flowers. Pretty ruby garnet color- no inky, black stuff here. Great structure to age. Lively acidity with tannic grip. Very good juice.
BdM seems to hit my Bordeaux buttons, but at a much earlier age. I don't get the peanut butter I usually get with sangio. Very very nice.

Medium dark red color. Red, rustic nuances on the nose with red currant, red cherry, tomato, herbs and dusty gravel road. The taste is more of the same, initially dominated by the primary fruit, currants, strawberries and red cherries, but on the finish more herbs and greenish notes. It was well in line with the vintage’s juicy, but acid-rich style, yet it appeared atypical compared to the Brunelli taste along with it by being redder in style.

Brunello 2004 Tasting (HSH): To me the nose was even more closed than Il Poggione. It did however have some dark cherry and the nose was very elegant and pure. It did open up with some air but the nose was never very good. The palate was on the other hand very nice. Great elegance with a beautiful and pure fruit. A little bit more restrained on the acidity and tannin compared to Il Poggione in the other glass but still a very nice balance. Perhaps lacked a little on intensity.

Excellent brunello which drinks very well now, but will keep and develop for some years to come. For me to be more excited it would have needed a bit more of everything (body, intensity, length). I will drink mine over the coming five years.

On the palate red fruits, a lot of spiciness, some chocolate, firm acidity and bitterness and soft tannin. Beautiful and complex wine entering its maturity stage now. This will still be a beauty 5 years from now and probably will even improve a bit/show more complexity.

Perhaps lacked a little on intensity.
