This is a sound bottle! Thank goodness. A wonderful Chevalier. The color is warm gold with floral notes. Started to fade in the glass after half hour. Drink now.

Decanted about 30 min. Compared to several years ago, these do appear to be waking up again. This was the best one yet. Nose was wonderful and palate complexity was outstanding for a couple hours until gone. Happy to have waited it out.

Based on this bottle, I don't believe these have a ton of time left... But this bottle is juuuust right. It's in that place where white Burgundy where the change has begun, but all needles are still in the green, If you will! The color is darkening, but still has a keen look to it. There is so much flinty mineral, chalky mineral, soft yellow fruit, and perky acid freshness left, along with some cool green mint and dried spices remaining, that it is in a sweet spot right now. Also it still possesses a freshness, and brightness that makes it easy to drink. Love it and drink up!

Blind, unmistakably white burgundy but I was in Meursault. The weight of fruit and nutty oak character was what led me there I think. The fruit really swallows up the oak though, everything is in harmony here. Has a nice touch of smoky reduction at the start, leading to more stonefruit and then slightly into the tropical fruit spectrum. The power on the palate is pitch perfect; the structure is totally grand cru, balancing texture and acidity with great finesse.
If I had to fault it, it feels a bit “worked”; the leesy texture feels maybe just a bit over the top, and the oak component so precisely dialed in. That’s getting quite analytical though. This was a pleasure to drink.

2nd Annual Jadot with Frederic Barnier (RPM Steak): A real step up here as I think we've caught this in a peak window. Riper fruit but plenty of fresh, energetic acids throughout. Good mineral, floral and spice accents. Very good.

Had two examples a month apart. There seem to be some variation between the bottles. The first one was rather tame and unspectacular. Today the wine is firing on all cylinders. Intense minerality and cutting freshness leads to a high wire act of balancing. Thoroughly enjoyable. Serve this one a bit warmer (55-60F) to enjoy its full portfolio of flavors. ++

Popped and poured. Not sure what to make of it, seemed a bit tired. No premox, just weak nose and bland palate. Didn't really change over 2 hours. Will wait to rate until next time in case this was an odd bottle.

A private tasting (Jan-Dirk Taams' residence, Groot-Ammers, Netherlands): Very evolved nose, good depth, closed, hint of nuttiness, baked apple, fennel, clears up with some air; nice weight and concentration but really too developed, separating acidity; good length with some bitters. Directly from the Dutch importer's cellars, so no storage issues. Disappointing.

Wine Dinner Extravaganza (Capella Hotel Dining Room - Washington DC): Ripe and dense orchard fruit that is highlighted by very good spice and floral notes. I definitely like the concentration here but didn't find the finish particularly long or nuanced. I am averse to thinking it needs more time in cellar, given overall problematic experience with 2005s, including a Jadot Montrachet later this same evening.

Flint an lime on the nose. Some hiding yellow fruit. The palate has some interesing yellow fruit all coated by matchstick. Maybe a bit too flinty for me.

Some oxidation. Big structure and substantial fruit. White flower and high tone fruit battling nutty premox. Brown sugar struggles to come out. Less affected on the backend with pretty floral, peach, pear, and spice.

Color is a light gold; relatively sound in that regard. But there is a sherried edge to the bouquet, just that slight accent that tells you things are not 100% right. I'm glad I opened this now, but it is still irksome to drink a wine of this caliber/price and not have it be all that it should be.
Okay, enough from the soapbox - so what do I have in front of me. There is also a very light petrol accent that is attractive, but that sherried note continues to be present as well.
Taut & dry on the palate; drinkable, but clearly flawed. Bumski!

Brilliant! From magnum, still quite young, but opened for fear of premox. With a little time, this wine took on weight and complexity. Structured, smoky, with great fruit and minerality. A brilliant white Burgundy. Drink in 5 years. White Burgundy doesn't get much better than this.

Casual Dinner with Friends (goosefoot - Chicago IL): Lush and powerful with lots of Ripe stone fruit, toasted nuts and some oak spice hints. Very intense fruit flavors to start with a slightly sweet edge, intense structural elements in the middle and finish. Needs more time.

A birthday dinner for Suzanne at Christine's. (Christine's.): Muscular and intense with rich yellow fruit, melon and mineral, but completely overrun by butterscotch oak on the nose and palate. A shame as there are good materials here, though I'm not convinced the oak will ever fully integrate and with premox still an issue, I'm not sure one would want to take the risk. If big, brash and butterscotchy is how you like your Chardonnay, this one's for you. B/B+.

Drinking white Burgundies and Italians at Bluegrass (Bluegrass restaurant, Baltimore): I rated this wine 99 pts and correctly identified as a chevy at the GJE-style white Burgundy vs US chardonnay held in 2008. Recently purchased from the Zachys La Paulee auction. The issue of premox worried me but the color looked great. Rich chevalier fruits, excellent mineral expression, honey, lemon oil, and a hint of limestone. Unctuous palate and rich fruits. It started a bit tight but it really blossomed with time showing the best at the end of the night. It reminds me the 89 version with very ripe rich fruits. Started as 95 pointer improving to 97.

Chardonnay Shootout (Hughes House - Chicago IL): Blind Chardonnay tasting. Lean, muscular and linear, I knew this was Burgundy but thought it was from a leaner area and vintage. Lots of energy. Hard to say if this got lost amongst flashier, showier wines, or that this is shut down or in need of more air. I would have expected more, particularly given that 2005 is a fairly flashy and showy vintage for white Burgundy. Still my #5 wine tonight.

Wineflock - Chardonnay Shootout (My house): Group #9, My #10 - What a shame to see such a potentially great wine lost in this group. Is it just too young or lost in the sea of fruity oaky Cali chards? Pale yellow color with a hint of green. Forward nose of oak and yellow fruit with a hint of mineral. Puckering acidic yellow fruit on the palate with a slightly bitter finish. This did appear to open up in glass and by the end of the evening I was enjoying it quite a bit... Hold for now!

1.5 hours upon opening serving into Zalto Burgundy glass (“Flower” day): Medium orange golden to the eyes.
More yellow fruits and stone fruits like apricots. Lots of white spices.
Good acidity, saline minerality. Persistent finish.
94 points.
2nd round, 3 hours upon opening: more and more youthful fruits from this point.
3rd round, 4 hours upon opening: finally opening up and broader spectrum of fruits now.
4th round, 5 hours upon opening: yellow fruits and much more sweet spices like cinnamon and anise here.
