Bottle 1362/1982. A subtle whiff of reduction greets, it’s an immensely dense wine at first compared to the open knit and fruit driven Reignots but it is so with a tightly knitted mineral web that lends it some immense freshness, a hint of freshly ground coffee bean and cut at the same time. Soaring cinnamon with more coaxing, majestic and ethereal. It’s an immense achievement of a wine and this being my third encounter showed much like the first time (rated 98) while a second bottle which was also absolutely delightful was more dark, salty and caramel (rated 96). Louis Michel made some astounding 08s and this bottle just goes further to cement this. They are also in a nice spot although I always feel Eche needs more time than Reignots for example but they always drink well “young” too chez CLB. Drink now - 2040. 97+

During an evening where we also had a Reignots 08 (which to me pipped this Eche on this occasion). My second time with this wine and it didn't quite reach the same dizzying heights I experienced with a bottle earlier this year which was almost off the charts (rated 98). This bottle was excellent but showed different: quite brooding at first with lots of blueberry, on the nose a lot of salted caramel, some sous bois, very deep and packed and stacked and muscular (especially compared with the airy open and mesmerizing Reignots 08). Got better and better with air.

Comte Liger Belair does it - again! The line-up over a lovely dinner at Bibendum was great with Leflaive Chevalier 08, DRC GE 06 and Roumier Charmes 02 and we decided to pull the cork of the CLB together with the DRC to put those two great domaines up next to each other. When the cork of CLB was pulled the genie came out of the bottle immediately. SOARING cinnamon, baking spice. Such a genius wine that immediately revealed itself, yet it held for the next 3 hours we savoured the bottle and if anything just became finer, more mineral. A total beauty and to it did slightly dwarf the DRC GE 06 - which of course in its own right was also beautiful, but side by side just had a difficult standing next to this ever intoxicating elixir grafted my the Vicomte. Lucky enough to have drunk Suchots, Reignots and Romanee 08 this year as well I would rank this Eche a tiny notch above the Reignots even in this vintage. Both are exceptional though and drinking really really well. Sadly my only bottle of Eche 08.

Winos' excellent adventure in France; 6/22/2017-6/27/2017 (All over France): Perhaps due to the vintage and vineyard, the nose is decidedly red. Beautiful mature nose, which is a bit surprising, displaying bright red fruits, raspberry, strawberry and rhubarb tart, spicy spices, noticeable sous bois, grilled shiitake, a hint of oak a la sesame and tree bark. Nicely integrated harmonious palate, beautifully layered succulent red fruits, bright acidity, strong presence of mineral and a long decadent red fruit driven finish. This has already reached its youthful peak and drinking beautifully.

very nice and open. The wood is now integrated in the wine which offers plenty of fruit and backbone. red berries and fleshy and dairy notes. drink now or soon.

A little bit cooked, in terms of slightly stewed quality, higher acidity and lack of purity. That being said, I actually enjoyed the brutishness and slight bitterness here, which stood apart from the other Liger-Belair wines.

En helt underbar Echezeaux med massor av ren elegant frukt, rosor, mineral och viss kryddighet. Underbar koncentration och struktur med långt fint avslut.

Wines Tasted at HDH Auction; 12/10/2015-12/12/2015 (Tru Restaurant - Chicago IL): Popped, decanted and poured. Tasted over the next hours. Aromatic start much like the Clos du Château, but with greater intensity, great floral notes and a hint more new oak. Lots of red cherry and berry flavors with same spice intensity. Seamless from start-to-finish, very long, very well textured. Not close to its peak drinking window yet, this has lots of upside from here.

The wine sadly did not open up. The nose had some red fruit and oak but also a bit alcoholic. The wine was very tight throughout the night. The floralness of belair was totally missing tonight. Perhaps bottle variation.

A superb array of raspberries, blackberries, roses, rhubarb and spice on the nose and palate. Super bright and forward. A bit modern. Great balance and acidity. Full blown. Leroy fireworks with DRC precision.
Fascinating combination of the breadth of the 2006 Echezeaux with the lift of the 2007 Echezeaux. Lovely wine! The excess acidity has melted into the structure.

Masterclass - Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair with Louis Michel Liger-Belair (St-Regis Hotel, Singapore): Alcohol :: 13.5% A shy kid. This too display lots of alluring spices, very deep but this is still very tight and reserved, with good sense of harmony. Larger scale with perfectly ripe dark and red fruits, rounded spiciness, polished, refine and elegance that differentiate itself from all the Echezeaux that I had previously, which all has this rustiness. Classy, remarkably fresh with stunning depth and complexity, everything remained super focus and razor sharp precision. Complex long finish. Delicious! Very calm and warmth, a Zen wine. I’m fan now!

Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Masterclass (St. Regis Hotel, Singapore): Absolutely superb. This was the single best Echezeaux I have ever had, and by some distance the best wine in a weekend choked full of impressive pinots. Of all the five great glasses in the flight, this had the most complex, intriguing nose. Not quite as expressive as the pair of Vosne 1er Crus, maybe not even as expressive as the pair of village wines, but there was a whole lot more going on. Subtle scents of earth, gentle spices, dark cherries, touches of dark fruit, a hint of toast, some flowers, a bit of wild bramble - so much to pick apart as they wafted out of the glass in a deeply integrated melange. Lovely stuff. The palate had such really elegance for an Echezeaux. Like the nose, it was superbly integrated, very harmonious, with beautifully detailed red fruits - strawberry, cherries, raspberries... woah, piercingly pure here, and just super yummy. It still had some of the broad shoulders of its terroir and reservoirs of depth in its fruit expression. Yet on a whole, the wine was more toned and supple than muscular, more about finesse and elegance than the brute force one sometimes gets in top examples of Echezeaux. Here, the pitch perfect acidity was woven so wonderfully into the body of the wine, the super fine velvety tannins provided such classy structure, and the whole package just came together so well that it was a juicy, succulent and incredibly focused whole. So complete. Of all the wines, this was the one where the fruit completely stood up to the 100% new oak, almost absorbing any nuance of it. This wine was one of those at the very top echelon of Burgundies that are almost impossible to pick apart - a brilliant, brilliant wine.

Louis Michel Liger-Belair presents Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair (St. Regis, Singapore): The nose is supremely perfumed with a little high-toned floral notes commonly found in Chambolle plus it is seductive in a feminine manner. As opposed to the Petit Monts and Reignots, the Echezeaux is less minerality driven but more spicy and darker fruited. There is so much stuffing here yet so precisely restrained that you feel that this wine will literally explode in your mouth anytime. The purity does remind me of the Henri Jayer Echezeaux I tasted before. Classy yet not showy. An aristocratic wine rather than nouveau riche. As compared to the Reignots, this is also a zen wine but stylistically different. A qualitative choice.
