You gotta love how well Spanish wines age, and this LAN is a delight for those who like 'em aged: smoky, cedar, spiced-raspberry, balsamic-strawberry, and cinnamon all come out in this 11 year old wine.

Nose: Black berries, cherries and licorice with hints of black currants and tobacco Color: Ruby to Purple hue Palate: Cherries, raspberries with hints of wet stone and some smokiness Finish: Medium body wine with nicely balanced acidity and medium tannins, with high alcohol Thoughts: This wine has aged well and still has lots of flexibility and will be something we keep on our cellar.

I earlier expressed a view that the opinion of the pro reviewers that the back end drink year for this wine was 2013 was incorrect. I changed my back end year to 2015. This was my last bottle. It was fine, but is finally beginning to fade. Drink up.

Youthful, ruby. Intense & lively red fruit with a hint of fresh vanilla on nose and entry. Glyceric mouth-feel. Long finish. New world style. Excellent QPR.

aged beautiful this light red had aromas of dried raspberry, plum, Christmas spice, spiced cherry, and a subtle cedar underlay ... Flavours proved just as exciting: spiced cherry, anise, white peppered plum, a pure pleasure both smells and tastes; the best part: it hardly shows its age.

Fresh red cherry up front going to cedar box and finally to leather. This has held up extraordinarily well. It has thinned some but was still has a great presence.

Deep dark blue-purple. The nose is fruit and oak. The flavor is not complex but is nicely balanced blackberry and plum with oak and a touch of smoke. The finish was fruity and smooth lightly dry tannin. Its a pleasant drinker.

Blah.... My impression on the nose was that this was still worth drinking, however, tasting it resulting in a double take where I had to make sure I has the wine glass in my hand. Taste was dull, as if water-downed 2:1. Drink soon (not expecting much) or pour is my recommendation at this point.

Great PQR. Not over the hill, but the wine is soft with few tannins left. Still lots of fruit alive. Not as earth as many wines from this region......a little more elegant. I disagree with views that 2013 is the last drink year, but would drink up over the next couple of years. Another recent reviewer expressed a very similar opinion.

Not at all past prime, drinking correctly. Decent, if a bit too modern and anonymous. Not my choice of crianza but it was a decent drink and fair value.

The attention to oak is critical here. Savory here, light body on the mid palate, and yes, the oak shows through. Not in a bad way, but it is right there. Tasty wine, if lacking in personality. But clean, well made, straight ahead.

QPR is wonderful on this one. Great little bottle for $8. Nose shows a touch of earthiness and smoke. Tannins are well integrated. This bottle showed a little more oak than others I have had in the past. Flavors of cherry, smoked cedar, chocolate. Lingering finish.

This is a wine traditionally made with Tempranillo and is aged 12 months in oak. It comes from the Rioja region of Spain (the most famous of Spain's regions) and from a prestigious producer of the area - LAN. Now that the preliminaries are out of the way its time to get down to those brass tacks people talk about ... the wine itself. As mentioned in a previous post, I'm doing my typical winter wander through my cellar and picking out old bottles to taste. This wine is only 6 years old - so not the oldest I'll subject my taste-buds to, but it might turn out to be one of the best. This was an absolutely stellar wine that kept getting better and better the more it sat open in the glass. The nose was earthy (at first - this dissipated with an hour in the glass) along with plum, cedar and some strawberry aromas, which seem to struggle to get through, but did eventually make it. That earthy note that was on the nose was no where to be seen on the palate: plum, blackberry, sour cherry, and smoky ... but wait, near the finish it (the earthiness) did pop in to play with some cassis that lingers on. At about the hour-and-a-half mark it hit its stride and showed black cherry and cocoa from mid-palate to finish (and into the long linger). Simply lovely.

An average bottle and this a disappointment for the usually very good LAN. I suspect this was a result of this vintage being best drunk in the 2011 timeframe, though it did improve with some decanting, so it was not a lost cause. Average describes it well- worth drinking this vintage, even now, if the price is right.

Very nice clarity and a light garnet color that looks to be fading slightly toward the rim. The nose is very earthy and woody with a little floral. Nice acidity and a well balanced wine. Medium body with very mellow earthy flavors, some plum and dried cherries. The tannins are there but minimal. This is a very smooth easy drinking wine that is delightful.

45m of air in bottle. Light ruby color. Nose of dark cherry and wood chips. Similar palate with a touch of chocolate. Firm tannins. Lingering berry and tannin finish. One of our two cellar defenders. Great QPR.

A favorite cellar defender among the family. You can't beat the price at under $12.00 and if you are leaning towards red with a Mediterranean seafood, look no further than Spain for your wine choice. But steer clear from the purple color, alcohol infused fruit bombs that are defining the new era of Spanish wine making. Instead look for classically made Rioja like the LAN. There is plenty of super expensive, age worth Rioja out there, but the LAN is meant to be consumed now.

I have no idea what Rioja's are supposed to be like, so I can only review this as "a red wine in a glass". This is an old world style dry red with pretty good aromas for $10. It's nothing like those fruit bomb spanish reds. 13.5% alc keeps it under control. A bit of that chewy vitamin-c flavor that I commonly find in cheap wine is present, but some of it gets resolved over an hour. I think this is quite good for $10.

nice to see a grocery store wine that can age a bit. Mature notes of cherries, roses, cedar, tar and tea. Not the big punch if fruit and oak in it's youth, with time in the bottle this is smooth and delicious. Nice lil sipper.

Showing much better than my previous bottle. Red cherries with a hint of earth and cedar on the nose. The palate has red fruit with some barnyard, earth and cedar. High acid, moderate tannins and a medium-long acid-driven finish. Nice for $10. Drink now.

Lavender, blackberries, hint of oak and vanilla on the nose. Medium bodied with raspberry, blackberry, hint of earth and tobacco, mild tannins. Well structured and subtle all around. Opened up nicely after 45 mins, balancing out the fruitiness Great value. Drink now trough 2013.

Ruby red color hints at depth and the nose fulfills the promise with plum and fig, spicy white pepper, and dark caramel. It’s a wonderful nose that keeps you coming back for more. The taste is very traditional Rioja, softer than the nose would leave you to believe but nicely balanced. It has a soft fruity start with a very spicy middle that matches the nose then a long subtle growing, surprisingly soft tannic finish. This is a very approachable, very well done wine. This is one of the best Riojas I've had it is available at Harry and David Country Store now. TM

Dinner with Gavin and Annie (Tapas B44, San Francisco): Simple stuff. A pleasant enough quaffing wine, but a bit too young I think. The nose was had a nice mix of sweet cherry and red berry aromas with a touch of smoke, earth and toast. Fresh and bright on the palate, it showed more red cherry flavours bedded down with a layer of slightly funky meat and wet earth notes. Fine tannins added some grip to the package, but I found it just a bit thinnish and unconvincing on finish, where the fruit gave way to little notes of smoke and spice. Not great, but it was pleasant quaffing and I suspect it may fill up a bit with time. Certainly decent value at its price point.

Decent Quality to Price Ratio outcome. It is a lighter Rioja that pairs with lighter fare where you want a red, but not an overpowering one. Appearance as expected, nose and taste are fruit, leather, cherry and certainly oak. Medium finish. More of an everyday red versus a special occasion, there are better Riojas for a little more (such as Marques DeRiscal for $20). This one was a tad bit better than the last, we aerated and that helped.

4/12/12 -- another bottle: faintly oaky nose; earthy more-spice-than-fruit x black tea taste chased by chalky Old World tannins on the finish; overall: I'll stick to my previous assertion that this wine is a decent $10 weeknight choice, which I would pair with pasta tossed with a cream sauce, prosciutto, and parsley
3/24/12 -- another bottle: this time, I pick up a little sweaty socks on the nose; but the same earthy Old World mushroom taste continues to dominate as before. Having found the wine for $10, I am sold on its QPR. This is a decent weeknight pour.
1/21/12 - color: medium-to-deep purple; nose: faint oak-vanilla and pencil shavings -- even after three hours of decanting; taste: medium-bodied mouth feel, tastes more earthy (dried currants, raisins, and a little spice) than fruity, black pepper chalk-tinged finish is backed by yummy medium-length tannins (wine's top feature); overall: mature, self-aware, take-me-for-what-I-am Old World offering which cries out for pairing with Stilton (or similar cheese) and biscuits, OK QPR at $15 (but would be a steal at $10) -- ready to drink now (as of Jan 2012), for old age will soon set in

I guess this has acceptable Rioja typicity and no obvious flaws or taint. The utter lack of depth and distinction seems commensurate with the el cheapo price-tag, and yet still strikes me as a total waste of money. I have another bottle, and am not looking forward to it at all.

PnVnD let air for 2hrs. Crisp garnet not saturated with a sanguine (always wanted to use that descriptor) rim. Earthy tobacco plum and slightly meaty nose. Medium(-) weight with green tea and cherry pit tannins. Dried cherry leather meat and plum flavors with a whiff of earth and tobacco. Lingering dried cherry and tobacco finish. Very dry very elegant and very complex for the price and age. Would buy again and would love to try with some grilled lamb.

Not the most complex wine, but probably the best QPR I have tasted at $9.20/bottle (case purchase). Definitely get the black cherry and pepper flavors with a decent dose of tannins to back it up. A couple hours of slow-ox in the bottle or decanter bring out the flavors. Great match for a weeknight dinner of grilled flank steak and risotto.

Modest nose with mostly red fruits like dark cherry, a whiff of toastiness, but even the nose lets you know this is not a "big" wine. On the palate is has a great texture and consistency, it is smooth but has a gravely minerality to it as well. I was surprised at the modest tannic structure as well, it borders on elegant. At $10 this is beyond excellent QPR, good luck finding more of it though. The finish is very nice, medium-long and gives nice finish of toastiness and spice. Paired with rice and chicken with a dark homemade sauce. Popped and poured through vinturi, decant not absolutely necessary but a little time in the glass brought out more fruit flavor.

Notes consistent with last bottle. Gave this one a longer decant and the bright cherry flavor really came out. Definitely lacks the complexity of a Reserva, but demonstrates the pure fruit/vanilla profile of a great Crianza. Makes for a excellent pairing with food or even as a value-priced cocktail wine.

Appearance: Bright and clear, medium (+) intensity ruby with paler rims and legs Nose: Clean, medium intensity and youthful aromas of plum, black cherry, raspberry, strawberry, sweet spice and cedar. Palate: Dry, medium (-) acidity, medium (-) tannin of soft and fine-grained texture. Medium alcohol and medium body, with medium (-) intensity flavors of blackberry, raspberry, strawberry, plum and toast. Medium (-) length. Conclusion: Good quality Rioja with a straightforward and easy-to-drink style. Ample of fruit on the nose but rather simple, with reasonable intensity. Light in acidity and tannin, the palate is also quite simple without much intensity. The length is rather fairly short. Ready to drink now and not intend for further ageing.

I was looking for a lighter red wine to go with a rub-crusted/planked grilled salmon filet and thought this would fill the bill. It sort of did. I like Rioja/Tempranillos and this one had a little chocolate and spice to it, but nothing too complex. We got what we paid for it. Not a lot of depth or complexity, but hey consider the price ($10). Not a top shelf wine, but good everyday red with lighter fare.

Such a delicious bottle of wine. This wine drinks way way above its price range of $10, yes I said $10. OK, so this is gonna be a little off the wall but the second I stuck my nose in this wine, I got butterscotch; hey call me crazy, but I did. We also got dark cherries tapped with a little oak. On the palate this baby was long and pretty. It actually gave off some interesting earthy tones as well as red fruit, but certainly not overpowering. Drink it over and over!!!!!!

This wine is an AMAZING value. Bright ruby in color, fading toward the edges to a light pink. There's a hint of gold/orange hue in this wine. The nose for me had heavy suggestions of tobacco and spice, with very muted berry scents. On the palate the texture is light and acidic. The alcohol definitely comes through, but it's balanced with earthy flavors and light fruit. This wine is drinking extremely well right now and I would not age it more than another year or so.

After the initial open, the wine was dry and had earthy tones. Decanted for two hours. It opened up with deep berry and earthy flavors. It was smooth, less dry, and fruity, including tastes of dark cherry, currant and black pepper. Aroma of pepper was present as well. Definitely would drink again.

Nose: Black berries, cherries and licorice with hints of black currants and tobacco Color: Ruby to Purple hue Palate: Cherries, rasberries with hints of wet stone and some smokiness Finish: Medium body wine with nicely blanced acidity and medium tannins, with high alcohol Thoughts: It was used with Thanksgiving meal and paried quite well with the Turkey. It really showed it stuff when paired with the chorizo-corn bread stuffing that went with the meal. This wine has lots of fexibility and will be something we keep on our cellar.
For 10 bucks, this is a nice food wine. Not partically fruity or acidic or tannic or anything. But very pleasant, a little rustic, a little bit of fruit, and nice to drink with a cheeseburger.

Clear pale ruby intensity with lighter watery rim and think tears. Clean, pronounced nose of earth, black cherries, black currants, sweet spice, red meat, sweet tobacco. This wine is developing. Dry, medium - acidity and medium tannins, medium body and high alcohol. Flavor intensity is medium but does develop on the tongue. Bright red fruit of cherries, raspberries, and tart cranberry hit you first, followed by earthy sensations of wet stone and finally oak, cedar, and some charred wood. The flavor component are all there, but the fruit and the earth flavors seem to be fighting for domination in your mouth. Medium finish. Good. Can drink now and not intended for aging.

Drank this right after a LAN Rioja Reserva. To me, they were quite similar. No decant but splash poor throught a Houdini in-bottle aerator. The Crianza was a little lighter in color, like a dark cherry red. The nose was very similar too, dark fruit with some spice, herbs and earthy notes. On the palate, black cherry, spice, and some earth, like dusty leaves.. The finish was a little shorter for this wine. Good stuff, good QPR..

I like it! I think this is a great time to drink this wine. In the half bottle at least. Half bottles tend to mature faster, given the slightly higher ratio of oxygen to wine. Balanced, with moderated tannic acids, to my palate at least. Very good, and a good value too (84.5).

Glossy ruby red with a lovely nose, full of blackcurrant, cedar and spice. The palate is a little more modern in style than I enjoy, packed with juicy blackcurrant fruit and sweet vanilla oak. Still very young and quite primary, I'd keep these for a while yet if you have any.

Really a fine expression on Temprinillo at this price point, and a stunning deal readily accessible.Dark Crimson red in the glass, dark with only partial light passing. Leather, tobacco box, and asian spices in a meat sack. The graphite, cherry cordial, and root beer trends to anise. This has some really nice secondary flavors, and the tannins are very fine. Good balance of acidity, and very food friendly.

Elderberries, surprisingly boozy, a little loam in the nose. Also a bit metallic, copper. Cherry pit, margarita, earth, quite dry for the apparent red fruit. To start, my judgement may not be the best since I am finding that my palette does not like the temperanillo in general. I pick up a sharp nail polish and tobacco flavor with an highly acidic finish. If you find that you enjoy this type of grape, then you should probably ignore my opinion. This wine came highly recommended to me, so I must not have the preference for this type of wine.

It’s number 44 on The Wine Spectator’s Top 100 wines of 2010. They also gave it 90 points.
It’s 100% Tempranillo
The color is a dark Harvard crimson.
The body is light, and it’s about 60% opaque. (That means I can see through it.)
I smell Spain. I also smell red currants, bacon or prosciutto, and some spices (spicy spices). (My girlfriend gets uncooked sausage on the nose.)
As soon as it touched my tongue, I felt delight. I felt delight as it glided across my tongue and down into my belly. The finish, however, was a little chalky. It’s drier than expected. I definitely taste the red currants, and they are chewy. (My girlfriend gets cooked sausage.)
This would go good with meat or Chinese food.
It’s loosening up. It juicy-ing up. It’s Tempranillo-ing up. This is getting better. Let’s say 89 as a Tempranillo, and 90 as a wine, if that makes sense. I mean, what I’m trying to say is, “You gotta drink this wine sideways, at an angle, but straight into the mouth. Kinda like you do with a cigarette when you don’t want the drag or smoke to interfere with your view of the person you are talking with or have the smoke get in the way.”

The nose was somewhat muted and un-impressive and had me wondering what all the hype was about. The pallette started with nice sour cherry, touch of earthiness, but through the mid and to the finish is where this really sings, as it just keeps attacking with cherry, chocalate, and a touch of cinnamon. The finish just seems to linger forever. Great value.

Fantastic value fro price. $10!!. Have had 2 bottles on 2 different occasions. Both wonderfull. 89-90 points. Comprable to the reserva and not too far behind the gran reserva to be honest. Tasting notes: somewhat thin but balanced. Needs 1 hr of decanting. Dark fruit mostly plum. Some tart cherries late. Fair nose. Good flavor and mouth feel.

Sparkling rose purple color in the glass. A violet nose complemented with leather and soft pepper flavors. A thin but long finish. A faint metallic note on the finish -- not unpleasant but noticeable, especially without food. Full but not overly lush or dominated by forward fruit -- rather restrained. A wine best not to be overly analytical about.

Color: Medium Ruby. Clear. Nose: Lovely floral nose, then blueberries and sour cherries. Some scorched funky earth that tended to fade into the background after 30 minutes in the glass. On the palate: Smooth and moderate red fruit on the initial attack, fresh yet soft acidity in the midpalate with some nice tobacco and leather over a little pepper. The finish is simple and smooth with some acidity, very soft tannins, and some latent spice and black fruit. Overall a nice, food-friendly mild wine. Solid.

Nose of blueberries, plums, vanilla, and a touch of broccoli funk. Nice acidity, restrained purple fruit flavors that improve with an hour or two in the glass, decent tannins, and a pretty good fruity finish. Overrated, perhaps, a bit lighter than expected (as mentioned in other notes), but still pretty nice and a great qpr. Definitely not a pop and pour.

This wine smelled and tasted like a 10 dollar wine. I dont enjoy just drinking any wine. I want it to taste good. On the nose I got a hint of cherries and could definitely get the alcohol. On the palate even though it was easy to drink, it was disjointed and awkward. The metallic/alcoholic bitter finish didn't help either. Finish was short and unimpressive. There was some fruit but the wine overall was thin. Very one dimensional and average bottle of wine. No way close to 90 points.. PERIOD!

Dark Ruby colored. I picked up dark fruit, licorice and spice on the nose. On the palate I picked up ripe cherries, nice acidity. Very smooth, with well integrated soft tannins - uncommon at this price point. Medium finish. Very nice! Great QPR...will buy more!

Nose is slightly porty, with licorice powdery vanilla and fairly strong fruits for the crianza level. On the dense and modern side, roundish fruits, fairly well done for its level, with a slightly tangy quality to the fruit. 86-87.

Color: Ruby to Purple hue
Palate: Cherries, raspberries with hints of wet stone and some smokiness
Finish: Medium body wine with nicely balanced acidity and medium tannins, with high alcohol
Thoughts: This wine has aged well and still has lots of flexibility and will be something we keep on our cellar.

aged beautiful this light red had aromas of dried raspberry, plum, Christmas spice, spiced cherry, and a subtle cedar underlay ... Flavours proved just as exciting: spiced cherry, anise, white peppered plum, a pure pleasure both smells and tastes; the best part: it hardly shows its age.

Great PQR. Not over the hill, but the wine is soft with few tannins left. Still lots of fruit alive. Not as earth as many wines from this region......a little more elegant.

Nice friut - not too big. good. taste: in the first sip a lot of succulent sweet cherries but later some subtle vanilla custard notes appear on the palette. Quite short finish. Correct in every aspect but no personality. Good price though.

Appearance: Bright and clear, medium (+) intensity ruby with paler rims and legs
Nose: Clean, medium intensity and youthful aromas of plum, black cherry, raspberry, strawberry, sweet spice and cedar.

Thoughts: It was used with Thanksgiving meal and paried quite well with the Turkey. It really showed it stuff when paired with the chorizo-corn bread stuffing that went with the meal. This wine has lots of fexibility and will be something we keep on our cellar.

Leather, tobacco box, and asian spices in a meat sack. The graphite, cherry cordial, and root beer trends to anise. This has some really nice secondary flavors, and the tannins are very fine. Elegant for a Crianza. Silky mouthfeel and a notable floral bouquet. Bright cherry fruit but tannins were still a bit tight. Really nice structure underlying the fruit here. I plan to open the next bottle I purchased in a couple of years.

Love this wine. Very floral, aromatic nose. Lots of delicious red fruit on the palate, with cranberry, cherry and pomagranete front and center, but also just a touch of oak and finally pine needle and earthy minerality. Medium bodied and nicely balanced. Would recommend.

PERIOD!
