Wow, amazing aromas straight off the bat, beautiful ripeness. So deliciously juicy, weighty and round mouthfeel. Massively outperforms vs expectations.

95 pts

The 1990 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Clos de la Roche is medium (-) dirty garnet in colour with a nose of dense sour cherries, red currants, alongside noticeable development of sweet soil, dirt and earth. There's also an underlying minerality on the nose.
On the palate, a sweet burst of entry of sour cherries and sweet currants - a lot of noticeable fruit purity indeed, despite the developing flavours. Good drive and laser like impeccable focus. There's a wet soil component in the wine that rises up quickly after its primary fruit flavours, creating amazing depth and character. There's a good minerality that strings the wine through to a powerful finish. Lots of power, character and fruit purity in this. Intense stuff yet flamboyant and elegant in style. With acidity still being pretty firm and holding everything together in place, alongside good balance, the wine's definitely holding up extremely well without a doubt.

What a surprise. Wonderfully complete older burg with black and dried red fruit, damp earth, spice and a nice mineral backbone on the nose and palate. A bit tart, which a like, tons of layers and while deep and complex with was light and pretty in the mouth. A long, lingering finish. This makes me want to buy all the Rousseau CDR I can find.

Armand Rousseau Dinner (Paris Club - Chicago, IL): This grew on me with time, which is scary given how amazing it was out of the bottle. It was all about rusticity here. The other Rousseau's were all spectacular, but this had a damp earth component that made it far more sexy and interesting. We all drink Burgundy because I think at our core we're intellectually curious, and this was one of those wine that really made me think. Just incredibly vibrancy and energy on the palate with layers and layers of fruits, spices, and earthy tones. Hard to ask for more.

Nose is sweet, dense, smokey, with hints of cherry and baking spice. Palate shows iron notes, black cherry, and darkish fruit wrapped in earth, but it's so freaking weightless, like the caress of a spring breeze on a sunny day. Pretty, powerful, long and dignified. A rare treat. Hard to accurately describe, really.

Slightly bricking medium dark red colour; barnyard, tart red fruit, mineral, maturing nose; elegant, mineral, , strawberry, dried cherry and iron palate, long finish--------absolutely superb wine,at its peak but should be fine for a number of years yet.

The '90 Rousseau Clos de la Roche was a continuation of my education in Burgundy. A lovely example that could still go for several years. Lifted tart red fruits with a little leather. Paired nicely with a couple of the dishes of the evening.

The nose shows some issues but it has a nice swarthy richness.

Gareth's Burgundy Dinner - Noize (Noizé, London): Developed nose - gently floral, mushroom, forest floor, vestiges of underlying red fruit. Medium bodied, harmonious, lightly figgy, game, spice, soft tannins, balanced acidity, not hugely long. Complete, mature. ****

Correct bottle. Very pretty, round with great balance. Red fruit and mushroom. A bit muddled on the palate.
