Modest nose of rich, super ripe blackberries and lavender. Full-bodied, this is round on the palate and shows maturity, but no signs of advanced age. Quite delicious on its on and with Chinese takeout! The palate is loaded with sweet blackberry syrup, black cherry, laurel and Asian spices. This is delicious and has really improved since my last bottle. Drink now-2028 93

Dark red, almost brown colour. On the nose: cherries, plum, leather. On the palate: cacao, dark red cherries, spiciness/pepper. A little bit of heat, gives it just that little kick. Great length. A modern C9dP, but something I enjoy quite a lot. At a great drinking spot at the moment, cannot imagine this getting a better.

Fabulous (Grenache-based) nose, and fairly light on its feet considering the 15.5 degrees. Definitely a long finish, although a tad short at the end. We have one more bottle in the cellar (and fortunately many more of the same vintage Chaupin) and I’m thinking we should drink this relatively soon.
Crimson in color. 15.5% ABV. Predominantly Grenache with Syrah and Mourvedre as well. Sensational nose of sweet red fruits, garrigue and licorice. Medium to full bodied with tremendous acidity. Rich, concentrated and well balanced. Cherry cordial, kirsch liqueur, iron and roasted herbs on the palate. Exceptional length on the finish. Definitely modern in style but if that is your thing you will adore this wine. Best over the next 2-4 years.

Decanted 1.5 hours. Notes from 3rd day. Dark garnet, suspended sediment. Dark cherry compote nose. Palate follows nose with black cherry compote bittering alongside a sweet core. Medium bodied, fine tannins on medium length final.
Well balanced and not the over the top high alcohol rendition of CdP that I often find with Domain Janasse bottlings. Still, the basic flavours here are a stewed brew of dark fruit - I don't find the delineation of flavour and complexity I typically find in a good Bordeaux or Burgundy.

The color is very dark. The wine is very full-bodied, very fruity, very alcoholic and jammy. The aromas óf ripe dark fruits are impressive. The aftertaste is long. As a whole, and compared to some other CdP's, I find this wine a bit one-dimensional and heavy, but it is very enjoyable and big wine anyway. In my opinion, this wine is in a good drinking spot now.

Janasse is one of the best Rhone wineries, with consistent high quality across the entire line, and impressive offerings at all price levels. This is their baseline Chateauneuf du Pape and the first bottle of the 2009 we have opened. Opaque colored, very aromatic, deliciously fruity, refreshing acidity, smooth and drying tannin, with a long and lingering finish. Highly enjoyable now with no need to drink up soon.

Brought back from Paris in 2011 and has been sitting in the cellar since. Decanted for an hour before tasting. Incredible. Complex, Perfumed, and Rich. Bright in the glass without a hint of bricking. Surprising for the amount of time in the cellar and the sediment at the bottom of the bottle. Drank over two days. Would love to have another bottle in 5 and 10 years.
Purple color and rather muddy. Very subdued nose. On the palate, plenty of dark fruits, but quite peppery and dry. This bottle was lacking the balance and purity I typically experience with a Janasse CNP.

Boasting a dense ink-like purple core the 2009 Domaine de la Janasse is an intense Chateauneuf du Pape packed with fragrant aromas of black currant, ripe plums and toasted caramel. It is full bodied and extremely rich, delivering a generous 15.5% alcohol content and an unctuous and satiny texture. The wine coats the palate with full-on flavours of dark berries, chocolate and Kirsch, and leaves a long and velvety finish. A superb effort at its peak now and for the next decade.

No notes, but a very well made and rich wine with plenty of dark, and some red fruit, choclate and herbs on the nose. On the palate its fullbodied and packed with dark berrys, smooth tannins and supporting acid that gives it some depth and good finish. There is over 15 % of alcohol, and you can tell! A very good wine, but just not my type. To a moose casserole.

A dense, almost syrup-like fruitiness is greeting you on the nose. The full-bodied taste is dense, very fruity and almost syrupy, offering flavors of ripe blackberries and other ripe dark berries. There are some flavors of vanilla, tar, menthol and smoke as well.
This is a great, but a clearly fruit-driven Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine. Whether you love this or not, is a question of personal preference. There is no question as such about the high quality of this wine, but in my opinion, there are even more subtle, multidimensional and interesting Châteauneuf-du-Papes than this one.
A great CDP from Janasse. No need to wait on these as it showed notes of dark berries, kirsch and earth over veins of minerality. Great intensity and mouthfeel. Based on this showing, I'll drink my other bottle within the next year.

I don't know what the fuss is all about. I find this wine rather weak compared to the other offerings from Janasse especially the Terre d'Argile which can be had for $18-25. Nose has over ripe plums, moss, and mud. In the mouth plums and cherries dominates with hints of fresh flowers and vanilla to follow. Tannins are velvety. Finishes moderately long.
It's hard to fault this wine but it's not as fruit forward as the Terre d'Argile at half the price and not as complex as the Vielles Vignes with the crazy RP99 and 100 point scores. In a blind tasting I would have guess it's the least expensive of the 3 offerings and peg it the $20 wine. All the more reason to drink what you like and not pay attention to the label, price, or scores.
This bottle is showing nicely. Good nose, very floral and intense. Tannins have soften quite a fair bit since last tasted few months ago. Fresh acidity level, seems to be higher than previous bottle, very lively. Probably has higher acidity than a lot of 2009 CDP. Good balance and structure for a basic CDP. Sipping this wine with Van Morrison and Pee Wee Ellis playing Tupelo Honey at the background, both are beautiful and lively. 93-94 pts.

I first tried a bottle of Janasse on our visit to Avignon in 2011. It was sublime, so we went directly to the domaine the next day and bought a few bottles to bring home. Opened this one for Easter family dinner (my in laws dont drink much so more for me) and enjoyed it with charcoal grilled leg of lamb. This wine has lost some of its "fruit bomb" effect that I noticed when I first tried it 18 months ago. Some more subtle garrigue notes are emerging behind the fruit, but this wine is still a Parker score chaser with big bold plum and dark cherries as predominate tastes. Aside from Beaucastel, this is my favorite CNdP wine.

Gorgeous nose. Floral and intense. Notes of underbrush, forest floor and dark berry. Initially with some heat at finish but become negligible by the end of the meal. Tannins are still noticeable, not as gracious as Senechaux or Clos St Jean 2009. For a straight CDP, this has very good structure and length, bigger than Clos St Jean and Senechaux. will last longer. Good acidity level. Better on the nose than on the palate. Approachable now unlike Janasse Chaupin and VV 2009 which are entering dumb phase soon. 91-93 pts.

Had high hopes for this one after being massively impressed with the Janasse CdR. The CdP bottle I tasted however is quite disappointing as it's marred with a bitter/off aftertaste. A booming 15.5% abv. Not impressed.
Enjoyed this while on vacation near Avignon in August 2011. Wonderfully forward fruit, full body, well balanced acidity. I promptly visited the Domaine and bought several bottles (including the higher end cuvees - Chaupin and Vielles Vignes) to take home. I plan to drink another one in a year or so and keep the rest (especially the Vielle Vignes) to enjoy later in life.

The wine looks Ruby colored. The legs are Slow. It smells like Raisin, Red Currant, and Black currant (cassis). Quite frankly a real bad example of overextraction, super high alcohol jumping out of the glass, and 2 pounds in your moth! What a badly done job for a wine of name. I love Ch du Pape and this was my first try with Janasse. Not any more.
Decanted and poured, this showed forward, rich and dense fruit on the palate and bouquet. There is a enough tannin and acidity on the finish to keep everything balanced. This drink well now with decanting and may improve with additional bottle age.

Lots of deep tones, but more raw and edgy. Lots of kirsch, ganache, licorice, and floral top notes complete the nose on this youngster. The palate, while not exactly brutal, is quite brawny. Lots of tannin nestled in a thicket full of bramble, damson, blueberry, bacon and mesquite. This needs a bit of time in bottle still, and could stand a few hours on air if consumed now. I love what the Sabon’s have done with their 2009 harvest. I'm placing this smack in the middle of their 2009 hierarchy, the VV leading the pack and Chaupin a very tight third.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape: 2009 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Tradition Rouge—CdP typique. Very ripe and rich but not a lot of individual character. I would expect a similar profile from many producers in this vintage.

Except for the taste of alcohol, it is a nice wine, but the alcohol lowers the score.

Nice violet and graphite nose with some earth and mineral. On the palate very round and pleasing. Nicely made and not too modern.
