La Paulée de NY Gala Dinner (Pier 60 - NYC): Similar to the 91 tasted earlier but just a bit more muted and less intense. Incredible on its own but the side-by-side showed its not of the same caliber.

La Paulée de New York Gala Dinner (Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers - New York NY): In 91/96/98 vertical. Ripe and sweet black and red cherry with rich baking spice. A very tasty and powerful wine from start-to-finish, but without the same level of Clos de la Roche typicity as the great 1991 tasted just before.

Burgundy dinner at Grace (Grace Chicago): There is definitely a tell tale rhubarb and burnt spice note to the 1998 Leroy's I have had lately. This was quite good, but the fruit just seemed slightly muddled compared to other vintages. I wonder where this will go.

Great Burgundy Dinner (Grace - Chicago IL): Served single blind in flight, this was fairly easy to identify as the 1998. Perfumed and intense aromas, this was most interesting aromatically. Palate was also intense with lots of black fruit and sweet spice, but slightly one-dimensional with modest nuance and an ever-so-slightly jammy finish. Similar to other times I've had this wine.

Dinner at Home with Friends (My House, Chicago IL): Opened about 60-75 minutes before serving, and not decanted. An interesting and pretty mix of red and black berry fruit, wet earth and darker spice on both the nose and palate. Fantastic floral component. I really enjoyed the texture. Medium body and finish with good acidity. Lacking some in structure compared to the 00 Roumier Bonnes Mares in the next glass over. Perhaps that caused us to lose focus on this one a bit. I would certainly be very happy to drink this any time though.

I'm reserving a score until such time as I taste my other bottle of this but, as a huge Leroy fan, this was a tremendous disappointment. Not bad, just a disappointment. Slightly opaque, dark red. Nose of cherries and buttered popcorn but also some moldy blue cheese. The palate is tart, leathery and tannic. Just not showing much and what it is showing isn't all that nice. Let's see what happens with the next bottle.

Clos de la Roche Dinner (Custom House - Chicago IL): Served in single blind Leroy CdlR flight. Very nice but a little disappointing given how incredible we have found most of Leroy 1998s to be showing recently. Mostly red fruit with moderate length. Fragrant in the classic Leroy manner, this was a pretty wine but didn’t show the serious power or fruit depth that I expected. Opened and decanted 2 ½ hours before serving, which in retrospect was a mistake.

Some Champagnes and a few reds (Columbus, OH): Sex in a glass. Incredibly seductive wine - red and black fruits with floral undertones. Full, youthful palate with a great tannic balance. Really good stuff.

Forward, open, fat, sweet, lush and silky, with a purity of fruit and round, spicy, kirsch, earth, cherry and strawberry finish.

50th Birthday Celebration Dinner with Wine (Chez Schmidt - Chicago IL): Very good spice start with lots of black cherry aromas. Still mostly fresh, just hints of emerging sous bois development, but very elegant overall, even if slightly short.

Notes of coffee, caramel and filbert. Kinda lean, but very pretty
