decanted 1 hour after opening and served 1 hour after decanting. Smoke, grilled meats, nice and fragrant nose. Decent but far, far away from a 100-point wine.

opened for 1½ hours, then decanted 15 minutes prior to serving. More smoke on the nose, and almost a little savory. Good depth on the palate and seemed more clean, and certainly more cool fruit. Appeared younger and more reserved than the 98 Célestins.

Think of something unique. It's not exactly the style of CDP that I like the most. A brutal wine. But there is something special, especially for those looking for a dense experience, with a lot of material, that makes the wine almost chewy. Plenty of fruit, alcohol and tannins. Very good, but unconventional.

Chateauneuf-Du Pape, The 1998 Vintage, A 15 Year Retrospective: Medium ruby red, with a somewhat muted nose with some dark berry fruit and prune competing with a touch of volatile acidity. The palate was quite restrained with dark flavors of soy and Asian spices. Supple texture and long finish made for an outstanding wine but my #7 and group's #7 of 8 in a blind tasting.

Sabon Prestige/Secret Vertical (Restaurant AOC): A bit of a funky nose with nail polish, raisins and aged meat. There is also a little VA sticking out but nothing seems to be wrong with the wine. The palate is simply amazing. Sweet dark plums, varnish, acetone and an extremely long aftertaste. Very powerful palate that just have a great complexity and is continuing to grow as time goes by. A simply superior balance and overall just a hugely impressive wine.

Berlin Offline. Deep purple with prodigious legs. Alcohol prominent on the nose. Intense, concentrated - painfully concentrated, animalistic, chewy and very tannic. Cough linctus, oak (?) and acidity. Massive and beefy; what would you eat with this? It's a meal in itself. Ex

Blind - at Bonneau tasting. Young CdP? A much lighter style than the above wines, but incredibly complex with ripe red and black fruit, bacon fat and some coconut? Also showed lots of fresh dairy. I had no idea from which producer, but a top single vineyard modernist from 1999 or 2000? I gave 94 points – perhaps a little high for a wine with this little weight compared to the Bonneau’s… I was amazed – this was Roger Sabons ‘Secret’ from 1998!!! A wine that was no match to the great vintages from Bonneau, this gave great perspective.

Uncorked.dk does 1998 Chateauneuf-du-Pape (and a few other gems) (Restaurant Premisse, Copenhagen): Dark red with a light rim. Very massive, sweet and intense nose of shoepolish, lavender, bacon, cherries and prunes. Nice intense taste and balance. Roastet bacon and almonds. Great aftertaste. Another sweet spot wine for me! Another treat to taste knowing there is only 1200 bottles around.
