Festival of Phil (Phil's place, Putney, Sydney): From Coravin. Leather, black hued fruit, sweet spice, black pepper underpin and a little black tea. Juicy, black fruits, sweet and savoury spice, woody, chalky textured tannins are persistent, slight alcohol warmth. Nice.

This bottle was much better balanced compared to the February 2022 bottle. American oak maturation to the forefront combined with ripe black fruits and ginseng; medium-plus bodied, mouth-filling and richly dark-fruited on the midpalate with subnotes of leather and soy. There’s sufficient acidity to meet the intensity of the fruit. Unsure what further ageing will do - suspect that the wine will just soften. 14% ABV, suspect the true ABV is a bit higher.

A raspy and jarring acidity has overtaken this one, and is out of balance with the wine. While this bottle had perfect cellaring history, professionally cellared for over 20 years, unsure if this is a representative bottle...will hold judgment for now and try another bottle later.

Still a beautiful example of Grampians, Victoria Shiraz. Lovely nose full of fruit and spice. Lovely mouthfeel, still plenty of red fruit and a little dark. Just enough acidity to deliver a long finish, tannins completely integrated. Hard to believe it’s 23 years old ....most have surely lost it by that age. Well done Seppelt!!!!!

Beautiful complex bouquet translates to a wonderful compote of dark fruit and leather on the palate. Silky fully integrated fine tannins frame the structure of this well balanced wine that continues to show earthy power into its 20s. Really lovely wine that is drinking brilliantly now and for a few years more.

GMs - Kevin Farewell #2 @ Encasa: Menthol, spice, raspberry, tobacco, leather, earth and plum. Really well composed on the palate, there is fine tannin structure and the earthy elements work really well with the cool red fruit profile. These seem to be consistently excellent and I hope to try a few more bottles in future.

A typical Wednesday evening in Sydney: Spice, red cherry, tobacco, plum and graphite on the nose. There is a good reason that I love these wines and a big part of that is the palate, it has superb balance with vervacious energy from bright red fruits and spice to give it another dimension. Still has great structure and the persistence is also very good. Love it.

Grampians Shiraz Verticals - Seppelt and Mount Langi Ghiran Tasting (Sydney, Australia): I last tried this wine 7 years ago and I loved it, thinking that 3-5 years would be a good time to come back to it. On this occasion it was just as good and possibly even a touch better. The nose is intense but at the same time it is quite pretty; there is red cherry, plum, some smoky meat and graphite. The palate has a core of bold fruit, but there is the structure and drive to keep it from ever feeling like a burden. Especially good persistence and length to it. A very different wine to the 1995 Seppelt Shiraz, but just as interesting and even has potential to improve. A friend mentioned he has had some bottle variation with this wine, this bottle was right on song though.

Good cork, last red of the night so attentions were not really on the wine, but no complaints! Not much point holding any longer, god to go now, some bottles will be better than others!

Little bit of sediment on decanting as expected, rich nose, although perhaps a touch muted. A taste happily revealed vibrant fruit with just a slight hint of oxidisation so it was back into the rinsed bottle and off to the restaurant. Over the meal it was most enjoyable, rich damson plums, hints of pepper and spice along with an aged depth that I love. But it wasn't a perfect bottle, I've had better, perhaps 90% of its potential. So pleased I still have a few left, it'll just keep on going this wine. I've had other bottles of this that I would rate a 96, but this wasn't quite up there.

Deep youthful colour, but there was some complexity on the nose suggesting that it had a bit more age to it. Earth, mushroom, violets, rosewood, a hint of black pepper and cassis. Tannin structure is present on the palate but showing good integration with the other components. An excellent wine that should be drinking at its peak in around 3-5 years and should live on for some time after that.
Deep purple in color, with meaty notes, plums, brown sugar and a hint of menthol on the nose. Plums, cherries, pepper, coffee, black licorice and smoke on the complex palate. This one seems to shut down after a couple of hours. Needs more time (90+).
