Leafy herbal notes are dominant. The wine is not bad, but a bit of a disappointment compared to prior vintages. It might benefit from another year or two of age.

As a few others have noted, this is a bit tannic and heavy right now, quite different than the professional reviews suggest (but consistent with another 2019 St. Estephe I’ve tried in this price range). The fruit is there but it’s underwhelming, and leans more to plum than cassis.
I expect this will improve with age, but right now I don’t find it very enjoyable. Maybe the pros got it wrong?
P.S. It’s interesting that this wine contains 3% Petit Verdot, which Robert Parker once described as providing “the hard tannic backbone that is otherwise absent as a result of a high concentration of Merlot.” (Bordeaux, A Consumer’s Guide, 4th Ed.)

A extremely tannic and alcoholic wine, much more so than the 2016, which is lithe and supple in comparison. The label states the alcohol is between 14.5% and 16%, and I would bet it’s at least 15.5%. This may be enjoyable in five years and very good in ten years, but right now it is neither. Tasted two bottles with same results.
