  • 2012 Wynns Coonawarra Estate Shiraz Black Label

Popped and poured directly from the wine fridge. Was worried it would be too tight and need decanting but it was great right out of the gate. This wine always shows well with about 10 years of bottle age. On the nose it shows pepper, dark fruits and savoury black olive, textbook profile for a Coonawarra Shiraz. On the palate there is a slightly cool/minty texture with well integrated tannins and acid, followed by smoky blackberry and plum notes, with a slightly spicy/peppery aftertaste that I really enjoyed. This isn't an overly complex wine but it is VERY well made, is outstanding value and probably has a few more years of aging before it gets to an even more interesting place. Wonderful with food too!

  • 2017 Auzias Cabardès Château Auzias Instinct Terrien

I bought a case of this wine based in Decanter's 98 point rating, and the intrigue of a Languedoc Cabernet Franc/Shiraz blend.
Medium ruby, medium intensity nose of black pepper, black fruits and dark plum with some notable sweet/pipe tobacco from the Cab Franc.
On the palate, medium acid, medium tannin. Again plums, cracked black pepper and scorched earth, but these are a tad dull. Some tertiary walnut notes. The finish is perhaps medium with acid lingering.
Decanted for 30 minutes. Somewhat interesting but all in all boring, even at the reasonable price point :( nah....

  • 2014 Voyager Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Medium ruby colour. Nose of bright, red fruit, with a lovely malty undertone. Some saddle leather and a hint of cedar. Medium body with medium acid - this is a baby still. Palate of plum, bramble, some slightly prickly acid (in a good way) but with a small "donut" in the mid palate. This is high quality cab, plush and mid-weight and very nicely balanced. Decanted for 30 mins, clearly would benefit from much longer and/or bottle aging. They just make beautiful wine at Voyager, this is one of them.
