  • 2022 Baron Herzog Chardonnay Special Reserve Kosher

Chardonnay grapes sourced from Russian River, Sonoma county, 18 months (not sure how as it was tasted less than 18 months from the 2022 harvest) in French and American oak, 14.5% ABV, mevushal.
Appearance was deep gold with minimal viscosity. the nose was high intensity, tropical sweet nose, yellow apple, pineapple, guava, tons of lemon curd, honeydew melon, sweet honeysuckle, hazelnut, pie crust, fresh cream, vanilla. On the palate it was medium bodied, almost oily mouthfeel, rich fleshy fruit and tart, racy acidity. Flavors dance around on the palate, lemon zest, lime, melon, apricot, tertiary notes of butter, saline, smoke, and flint, tons of oak, toast, nutmeg, crème brûlée and vanilla. Long acidic finish builds into crashing wave of buttery toast and lime peel. Fun wine, well balanced fruit and oak, excellent food wine. 91-92.

  • 2014 Château Soutard Kosher

Right bank Bordeaux from the heart of saint emilion, heavy clay and limestone soil, 63% merlot, 28% CF, 8% CS, and 1% Malbec, 13.5% ABV, not mevushal.
Appearance was a deep black core with purple tint at the edges, medium viscosity.
Nose was high intensity, restrained black fruit hiding behind the heavy floral, tobacco and spice notes. Blackberries, black plums, violets, eucalyptus, white pepper, tilled earth, tobacco leaf, some leather, cedar, cigar box and incense.
On the palate it was medium to full bodied, it starts off silky smooth and light at the front of the mouth but gives way to very muscular yet velvety tannins, concentrated rich earthy fruits, and plus acidity. Black cherry, plum, blueberry, a hint of black olive, bay leaf, loamy dirt, anise, tobacco, smoke, dark roasted coffee, baking chocolate, and vanilla. Tannins are the star of the finish - gripping mouth coating cacao with some ripe red cherries giving way to silky dutch cocoa lasts for an eternity on the palate.
Seem incredibly youthful after nearly a decade. With the fantastic prominent tannins and still concentrated fruit, seems like all the ingredients are here for this to continue going for years to come. 92-93.

  • 2019 Doubleback Cabernet Sauvignon Kosher

Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from Walla Walla Valley, Washington, 14.4% ABV, not mevushal. Appearance was deep dark and very opaque royal, with moderate to heavy viscosity. Nose was of high intensity and really nice, tight yet incredibly floral upon opening, eventually opening up and giving way to dark fruit and spices. Blackberry, black raspberry, cherry, and strawberry jam, floral notes of roses, violets and potpourri, sweet anise, graphite, mint, oregano, fresh cream, leather, cedar, baking spices and vanilla. Palate was incredibly polished and sophisticated, quite effeminate for a cabernet yet still racy. Juicy yet balanced fruit with understated firm tannins and moderate acidity, all coming together harmoniously. Juicy black currants, black cherry, black plum, a hint of juicy red strawberries, blackberry bramble, loamy dirt, white pepper, toffee, umami, tobacco leaf and cocoa. Finish is long and layered and silky smooth, blackberries and dusty cocoa. Drinking beautifully now, with time to breathe, but should age gracefully for years to come. On par quality-wise (albeit different in style) with some of the top kosher Bordeaux and the Gen9. 94-95.
