  • 2019 Henri Magnien Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes

The wood is imperceptible on the nose, which features an expansive array of berries wafting from the glass. The palate is fairly elegant and quite plush, with subtle flavors of raspberry, cranberry, and strawberries lifted by exotic spices. A little chewy at present, though approachable with a slightly tart floral finish. Good value and very easy to enjoy today, though it should develop more complexity with further cellaring, and hold for two decades.

Pale colored with a touch of oak, stone fruits, guava, citrus, and a hint of spice. Very fresh and quite saline, though very dry and mouth-watering at present with some bitter minerality. You could easily mistake this as being from Chablis, though the acidity and minerality makes you think of Phalz or Nahe. . Still young, but impressive. Best vintage I’ve had from here. Should continue to develop and drink well for a decade or more.

Upon opening, it smelled like an old wood chest with moth balls. My initial impression was tangy-sweet and herbaceous, like cough syrup. A few days later out of the fridge, dark red fruits and earth scents emerge. The palate became more subtle, with a rich and luxurious texture, almost syrupy, with dark fruit, chocolate covered raisins, toasted toffee, and spice. Giving the bottle time to breathe allowed the wine to develop better overall balance, and greater complexity. Alcohol heat also toned down. I don’t have previous experience with vintage port, but based on this experience, I would certainly give this bottle a very long decant. Not my preferred style of wine, but I have developed some appreciation for it over the last few days. Nonetheless, I can’t deny that the remainder of this bottle will go splendidly with my preferred use for Port consumption; over Dulce de Leche ice cream with brownies and whip cream!
