Heater week; 3/26/2023-4/3/2023 (Chicago, IL): A wine from the (imagined) old era of Roulot before the reduction and high-tension acidity wines of now. This is of a much more old-school style, rounded and somewhat fat, with a meyer lemon note throughout. There seems to be a fair bit of botrytis as well, giving this a slight mushroom note. I really do like this more restrained and subdued style of Roulot, even though I'm a big fan of the current wines as well.

Those who know Roulot expect great things from these village lieu-dit wines...and this bottle met/exceeded those expectations. Sensational wine in a really great place right now. Still has the electricity - the acid, the dry mineral, the salinity and bright lemon citrus. But this one has started to mature just a wee bit...as it should for a 14-year-old "village" wine. The development was positive in the sense that it gave this wine a hint of fatness/richness that young Roulot wines tend not to show - yet this bottle still had all that glorious crisp Roulot-ness also. For me, this is utterly fabulous to drink right now. Puts many a 1er Cru Meursault from other producers to shame.

The palate is very pure, crystalline. First there is a lemon zest, enhanced by a touch of wood, all enveloped by a hint of honey. It is not fat like a Meursault can be, but we can distinguish the terroir all the same, because the wine coats the tongue in a very delicate way. The mineral character dominates a perfectly coherent and integrated whole with a very fine acidity which gives a nice energy. Saline finish over a correct length.
Very beautiful, impressive for a “simple” village which just lacks a finish and a more imposing length.
