Any bottle of Romanee Conti that says "Appellation Controlee" on the label before 1936 is a fake. The AOC wasn't around until 1936. The 1915 that is pictured is FAKE

Wow, a perfect bottle of this wine! Quite faded on the edges but a good ruby color at the core. Has an incredible old nose of soft cherries, horse leathers and crushed Autumn leaves. On the palate, it is so open and giving with flavors of sweet, dank cherries and old forest decay. It is soft and subtle but with a great side of the tongue intensity. Not as complex or intense as younger Burgundy but it is sooo smooth and silky at this stage. The finish has a bit of a burnt wood character. Fascinating to taste this. Beau Rivage, Geneva 6/14.

bought from two German brothers who had inherited their father’s cellar) Excellent bottles – DRC only made 606 bottles of 1923 Dark, brownish red with clean, light nose with leather, forest and cherry. This wine was easy and gorgeous. Elegant, long and expanding on the finish, it almost explodes in your mouth while being smooth as silk at the same time. 98 points

The 1923 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti was actually a Vandermeulen bottling and created a healthy discussion at the table. It was clearly the odd wine out of the two brackets and had a spirity thing going on as if it had been subject to some fortification. It had real freshness and was sweet and earthy, breathing up to show some dried flower and sous bois in the glass. Not sure if this was a fake but it certainly tasted like it has had something added to the wine after it left the Domaine?

Vandermeulen bottling. Almost certainly a fake although not a bad wine. Substantial oxydative notes, spice, dark fruit, some sweetness. As the oxydative notes receded, the other notes emerged, but the wine remained blocked.
