  • Tasted side by side with the rest of the 2020 Burlotto lineup.

The ‘20 Monvigliero is a stunning wine, and may be drinking better on release than any of at least the past 3 vintages in my opinion. I think the lighter vintage in 2020 has caused the wine to really show off the herbal, meaty, savory notes of Monvigliero, which I found really attractive. I would not hesitate to open a bottle today. I find it hard to believe the wine will get better than it showed now.

The nose was intensely perfumed with really sweet red strawberry fruit, iron / raw meat, red florals, leather, a hint of olive, and a complex mix of herbal and spice tones. On the palate, the ‘20 is medium in body and quite approachable, with finely grained tannin that is barely perceptible, a beautiful sense of sweetness, and high acidity. Similar to the nose, red strawberry fruit with a candy like sweetness, red florals, iron, and sweet spice flow across the palate, with smoke and herbal tones lingering on the finish.

  • Gaja Vertical Celebration: PnP for an hour. Didn't take many notes on this. As is always with my experience with this wine, it is suave and juicy, boasting an undeniable charm. The palate offers typical strawberry notes and sweeter red fruit tones, yet it also possesses a sneaky concentration of dark red fruit, delicate spices, and herbaceous minty notes. While it may lack the vibrancy I appreciate in the '19, '17, or '16 vintages, I am truly splitting hairs at this point – this could simply be a reflection of my personal preference. Fabio's consistency in crafting the exceptional Monvigliero Cru across recent challenging vintages is a testament to his skill. 94-95

  • The wine is almost intimidating to look at - the luminous garnet colour, the edge of orange in a wine so young. Soaring perfume of all the delicate spices, orange peel, lemon zest, cloves and sandalwood. The fruit is stunning. But the structure melts into perfect sphericity and heartbreaking textural sublimity. A near-perfect wine. I don't give a 98 lightly!

Fabio Alessandria, the winemaker, says the 2020s aren't for the really long haul as much as the 2019s. He thinks they are more aromatic and fresher and would drink them at 5-10 years. He sees "wild strawberries" in them.
