A wonderful nervy Riesling with lemon and lime peel and stony minerality. Really lively acidity. Improved significantly further on day 2 with a 30 seconds finish. Drinks even better on its own tonight without food.

From the traditional label through to the very last drop, this off-dry Kabinett is quintessentially, and exceptionally, Mosel. It's actually hard to believe grapes can do this, or that this can be done with grapes, but this has been so very carefully done, achieving that near-perfect balance of elements. With aromas and flavours of lemon-lime, peach-apricot, apple, acacia honey, and wet slate, it's lush and sweet but also tart and zesty, the acidity and minerality streaking through the rich fruit, a light spritz adding an ethereal quality. One drawback is a lingering sulfur note, but the rest is just so good, including the bittersweet grapefruit pith and zest on the finish, and the incredible length. A bigger drawback, tilting the balance, is that it's just too tart right now, and so I would give this more time, what with its exceptional aging potential, for the acids to settle and for the complete package to shine as one. Still, it is, even now, a fabulous expression of Mosel Riesling and an astonishing value ($22 in Ontario). And it will only get better, from a 91 now to... who knows?

I grabbed this at MacArthur by mistake when I meant to grab the Graacher Himmelreich Kabinett. Not a bad mistake in that I enjoyed this too, but a bummer in that I don't think it's as good as the GHK. A touch lighter weight than than the GHK and not as much depth. Still has really pretty Richter fruit, apricot, peach, and tart green apple. Some slate as well. Somewhat shortish finish -- though as a parenthetical I have to say, I find that to be a really stupid complaint, especially when one is drinking $20 riesling. Still, I see it here all the time. "My $14 rosé is very yummy and has loads of floral tones and minerality, but it has a disappointing finish. 82 points." Seriously? What exactly did you expect, Mr. Parker???
Anyway, enough of my side rant. This is a pleasant wine, but it'll teach me to read more carefully, especially given my crappy German. Scheiβe!

Beautiful golden color. Lovely nose of fruit and petrol. Very fruity on the palate with subtle complexity and excellent length.
