  • Plenty of life in the tank and tannins are still grippy tho not overwhelming. Opened and chose to decant for half an hour. Went great with the pasta pizza and Saltimboca. Looking forward to drinking my remaining bottles over the course of the next 15 years.

  • 1988 and 1990 Brunello di Montalcino night (Lafiandra, Singapore): Pretty good. The nose here was a little funky on first blush, with some meaty, sauvage aromas, maybe wet leaves and leather, all curled around a sweeter core of black cherries and plums, dried earth and mineral, and then a nice touch of lifted wild herbs and peppery spice around the sides. Not bad, but not exactly what I would call alluring. I really liked the palate though - much better than the nose I thought. There was still a nice little grip of slightly powdery tannins and a good bit of balancing acidity running through pleasantly bright flavours of morello cherries and dried strawberrries, these seasoned with a nice bit of flowery herbs, and then a little touch of peppery spice, all trailing away into a decent finish. Not the most complete wine - this lacked a bit intensity past the midpalate, where it was maybe just starting to flag a little. Otherwise though, this was a good, enjoyable Brunello.

  • Spectacular once again! Everything in previous note stands. This is a standout wine! Wow...would love to get my hands on a 1990 Soldera and see what transpires between the two bottles. Left a quarter of the bottle overnight for a full day and it tastes just as perfect if not a little better on day two.

  • As others have noted - these are absolutely singing. One of the best bottles of Brunello I've had. Dried red fruits, tobacco, earthy forest notes. Darker in colour than one would expect given its age. Absolutely blockbuster palate - fully integrated but still so muscular and lively. Plenty of fruit and acidity. Great depth and complexity, finish was good but could have been even better.

Nevertheless - one of those wines that have come out of its 30 year slumber as a winner on all fronts. Great.

I had purchased this from a tasting last year, where it showed favourably against a flight of Italian greats (and even more so if you consider value). I'm going to go ahead and hunt down more of these, if at all possible.

  • Best Brunello I’ve ever had? Quite possibly. Highest score I’ve ever given in CT? Yes, by a few points. This wine was nothing short of spectacular! I recently had a taste of a 1959 Las Cases and a 1975 Biondi Santi. This was better than both. If you like aged wine, this is as good as it gets. Beautiful tertiary notes of dried leaves, forest floor, red fruit, tabacco on the body. Gorgeous depth and looong finish. Every sip was ethereal. Decanted and drank over 5 hours. This was humming right from the start and proceeded to get better as the night wore on. If you can find a bottle and are a wine lover, it’s worth any price. Had with Napolitana pizza and French cheese but just as good without food as we waited in the pizza.

(Ciacci Piccolomini Brunello Pianrosso) This was gorgeous upon opening but quicly went downhill. Super nose of Tuscan funk. Earth, cherries, well water, burnt orange and macerated cherries. Complex, deep palate with tremendous sweet fruit and brilliant structure . . . and then just like that . . poof . . . the wine was gone. This was like a 30 minute transformation from a brilliant wine into a wine that seemed like it suffered from poor storage. Weird.
