  • Ugh, this was just awful. On day 1, oak, oak and more oak. Vanilla, violets and perfume that completely obfuscated any semblance of Hermitage that may have lay underneath. On day 2, a bit more balance as the oak was somewhat more restrained, but this showed no resemblance to syrah, with a generic core of blueberry smoothie fruit. By day 3 this had completely fallen apart and was undrinkable. Hoping this was an off bottle, but I think it is more likely that this is just not my style of wine. Or maybe somebody switched the label with Chapoutier.

  • Splash decant, drank half the bottle over 1.5 hours. To me, this resembled a southern rhone more than a northern Rhone. The profile was large, with anise, spice and black fruit. I wish it was more savory and floral.

  • Can't help but feel I drank this one early. Popped a few hours before drinking but no decant. Deep, almost purple color in glass but light around rim. Very aromatic nose that kept evolving over the night; regular appearances were black fruit, bacon fat, earthy funk. Very little to no black pepper though. Tight tannins felt like they put a hole through the middle of my tongue for first pouring; wine left in the glass 20-30 minutes had less of this tannic impact. Well made wine and I suspect my rating would've gone up had I decanted or been more patient and waited more years.
