Very 1993 with a burliness and grittiness to the fruit that improved with more and more air to reveal nice meaty black cherry and well-integrated earth. Powerful Grand Cru concentration. I suspect this needs even more time to fully hit it's stride. Upside from here.

While many 93 Burgs have been under rated, this one was disappointing. Cherry nose but not a lot of depth. Acid palate was not balanced with enough fruit. Maybe this was the beginning of what became the 1996 disaster for Ponsot.

Burghound Symposium Asia - 1993 vintage dinner (Shanghai): This wine wasn't bad but compared to the two other Ponsots CSD/CDR and also the very strong peer group it fell off. Cloudy, dark garnet. Rich and ripe palate, sour cherry, good acidity but the tannins produce a drying finish. Probably picked too late, extracted too much.

Casual Champagne/ Burgundy Dinner Post Auction (Smyth - Chicago IL): Black fruit with lots of earth, slightly dirty. One person thought it corked, but I found it consistent with the earthy (maybe bretty, almost moldy) character from some older Ponsot that never fully came together. So sad, in contrast to the 1990 in the next glass.

(Ponsot Griotte-Chambertin) The only wine not decanted - and didn't it show, Medium-plus ruby with a trace of amber at the rim. For around 15 minutes this wine had absolutely no perceptible smell - eventually a beautiful pure redcurrant and griotte nose came through, all the while increasing in intensity. Perfect acidity and slightly rasping tannins which subsided with time. There is understated red fruit of medium concentration that lingers well but not much more that I can add. Unfortunately this wine was 'sacrificed' - doesn't seem to have the class or the concentration of the wines above or '93 Drouhin wine, but it is closed tight shut so I'll reserve judgement for another day. Requires at least 2 hours in a decanter or better still 3-5 more years somewhere cold and dark - still I've got two more chances of getting this right!

Soy sauce, earthy and graphite. Fruit has faded. Compare to the glorious 93 Ponsot CDLR, this is from another mother.
