  • Drinking very well now, at opening a slight dryness that disappeared fast. Plums, bold body, smooth and mature.

  • Dark ruby red.
    Full-on nose: mulberry, cigar box.
Medium full body with several levels: cigar tobacco, damson, herbs (thyme); smooth and 'a pointe'.
    Good length

  • Dracks över tre dagar. En hel del fällning. Tät blåröd färg. Inga tydliga tecken på ålder. Doft av mogna blå bär och varm jordgubbssylt. Tydliga fattoner, lakrits och choklad. Torkade kryddor. Lagerblad? Balanserad till frisk syra. Medelfylligt till fylligt. Medellång smak. Bittert slut och något eldigt. Nja.

  • A dark glowing red, decanted from a regular 750ml for 2 hours. Exploratory small glass promising. Nice aromatics, hints of grenache herbal qualities without really showing off, slightly subdued on the PnP. On the palate good dark fruit, a swish released a smidgeon of mint but no more. With the meal - a Moroccan lamb tagine - this had perked up, and was exactly what I expected of a decent Chateauneuf but without being compelling in any way. I drank it of course, but there was no wow factor. Am I asking too much? Probably. Decidedly middle of the road, correct and everything there, but with a lack of weight somehow, an underlying restraint that I cannot call thin but which prevents the wine from being truly engaging. Drink it, don't think it, move along. So in that sense it felt flat, especially as I know what a "blow your socks off" 2012 Chateauneuf can achieve.

I bought this to make up the numbers and get free delivery. I got my maths wrong, ended up under the threshold and got charged. To add insult to injury the four wines I really wanted didn't show up and thus I paid a 20% premium to get this single bottle delivered. Not an auspicious start. The reason I chose this is twofold; to get a sense of how the allegedly magnificent 2016 Mont-Redon might taste, and to compare this to the sensual Giraud 2012 'Tradition'.

So it fell short, showing neither hints of magnificence nor being anywhere close to the Giraud. That is not to say it was awful, far from it, a perfectly pleasant bottle of wine, and for £21 (I paid £26...) with so much bottle age it has to be seen as decent value. Not every bottle can have that je ne sais quoi element, in fact most do not, so this goes into my deep back catalogue of good without being memorable. Solid, but no more.
