I found this single bottle languishing in my mother in law’s cellar, so I brought it along to dinner at a French bistro. My first Quintessa, so I can’t speak to how this wine compares to better vintages. This was a tasty Bordeaux blend with a classic Rutherford mouthfeel, rich black fruits, black cherries layered with cedar, Asian spices, chalk, and some dark chocolate.
Quintessa is consistently a reminder and pinnacle of a Napa production that continues to create blends that show uniqueness and distinction. The ‘17 vintage shows immense elegance and sophistication in a year where the region suffered ferocious fires and extreme warmth. The vintage is a show of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Merlot, 3% Carmenere and 1% Petit Verdot aged 22 months in 76% new French oak barrels.
Decanted for 40 minutes: the nose starts profound and powerful. The glass follows with tasting notes of fig, black currant, black berry, palo santo wood, incense, cocoa, cola, dark jelly, and a grainy-earth profile. What takes this to the next level is the oily palate, deep purple coloration, and subtly that’s offered throughout. This is a production that mellows its immense notes with light tannins for an unreal, smooth finish. Keep your drinking window to 4-5 hours, this is meant to be enjoyed within the next 5-6 years, and is absolutely perfect right now with a little air.

Quality Napa cab enjoyed over a fantastic dinner. I have 2 more bottles that I’ll save for a meal with friends given how well the bottle was received.
