  • Nearly a year since my last bottle, and each time I wait with bated anticipation to see if there is any development. This is particularly pertinent as at the age of 66 I want to have the chance to consume my 2009s whilst still compos mentis. It is finally creeping into its drinking window, but probably still needs another 2 or 3 years to really hit its stride. The nose is glorious, as always, with blackberry and chocolate aromas and umami blasts. Front palate is still a little challenging with unresolved tannin hiding its complexity. Likewise, the palate is still on the harsher side, but its deeply fruited profile is finally pushing through towards the end and on the finish. Everything is still primary, but it is nearly there. Once secondary and tertiary notes develop, I think this could be challenging the 2000 and 2005 for the greatest wine from the estate. Ideally this needs a couple more years, but with sufficient air this can be enjoyable now if you like your wines young. A post script; i saved a small pour for the next day, and it had improved boding well for the future.

  • Nice dark fruited wine offering a lot of pleasure. Well made with a pretty and sleek earthy appeal.

  • Big nose, lots of dark and spicy fruit, tannins still quite evident, so this wine should continue to improve with more time. That said, it is drinking really nicely.

  • Still needing a lot of air to nuture it to life, this is still probably a year or two from its prime drinking window. It possesses a delightfuly deep nose of blackberry and chocolate after some initial umami wafts, with graphite/charcoal notes on the palate. At present the nose is its best feature, with the palate and finish still a little primary. However, the balance is impeccable and once the tannin evolves, this should probably deserve an extra point or two. I would hope that the 2009 vintage as a whole, like the 2003, should show its best at a relatively young age. A post script; this really continued to develop in the glass through the evening and merited another half point. Hence. 94+
