Gorgeous mature nose with loads of sweet fruit and cedar. Medium-plus acid, low tannin, light-medium body at this point. Perfect cork, negligible evaporative loss, great condition overall. Good, easy mature claret. No bells and whistles. Tonight, that was what I wanted. Still very bright, but probably worth drinking up. Best 15-30 minutes after opening. Nose 91, palate 88. $35/375 ml.

Deep cherry red with some pink at the rim. Almost pinot-like in its aromatics and flavor profile. High-pitched palate with austere cedar-tinged finish. Enjoyed although the fruit pretty much disappeared after an hour in the glass. Pop and pour is the way to go with any remaining bottles.

Monday, April 07, 2003 MR’s comments: nice mature Bordeaux, probably a little on the downhill side, which, in my experience is fairly normal for the 1986 Right Bank. Didn’t really take notes here, as I was still wowed by the Barboursville, but a pretty good wine that should be consumed. BEB comments: Dark in the center with brick on the edge. Nose of dusty rose, plum, cedar. Nothing very focused however. Flavors track the nose but decidedly faded with a short cedar finish. Not bad, but not a ’Wow’ wine either; nothing elegant or classic about it. With osso buco at Che Ross.
