  • Moderately translucent pomegranate color with a hint of pale orange bricking towards the rim. The nose is quite restrained and aged yet also beautifully perfumed with fragrant aromas of sour cherries, floral violet tones, some rusty iron, a little bit of marmaladey red fruit, light smoky notes of tar and a hint of dried roses. The wine is medium-bodied, bright and acid-driven with quite ripe and intense flavors of juicy dark fruits, tart red berries, some sour cherries, a little bit of sour cherries, light tobacco tones, a hint of stony minerality and a touch of leather. The wine is quite firm and structured with its high acidity and still rather firm and grippy tannins. The finish is long, dry and lively with complex, fine-tuned flavors of sour cherries, some crowberries, a little bit of perfumed floral tones, light tart red fruit tones of cranberries and lingonberries and a touch of tar.

A beautiful, wonderfully developed and still surprisingly lively vintage of Gattinara that shows a lot of structure and complexity. Overall the wine feels a bit less open and slightly more subdued than the previous time (December 2013), but it's a beautiful and harmonious effort all the same. Very lovely example of aged Nebbiolo. Recommended.

  • Moderately translucent and slightly hazy cherry red color with a hint of orange bricking towards the rim. Lovely, complex and layered nose with attractive, fragrant aromas of barnyard funk, cherry marmalade, tar, some perfumed rose aromatics, a little iron and hints of leather. With some air, the wine develops a sweeter, slightly syrupy or caramel undertone. The palate is light-to-medium-bodied with bright, racy acidity. There are dry, developed and quite intense flavors of sour cherry, tart lingonberry, some cranberry, a little tar, hints of stony minerality and a touch of leather. The wine turns even drier towards the tightly wound and slightly tannic finish, which is dominated by tart lingonberry, sour cherry and cranberry-driven red fruit character along with hints of dried herbs, some fragrant floral nuances and smoky tar.

At 35 years of age, this Nebbiolo is only starting to show some developed character, but is obviously far from going downhill – probably the wine is peaking now, or still on its way up. The age has mellowed some of its tannins, but its acidity is high as ever, giving the wine a rather light, bright and focused appearance. Wonderful structure, balance and depth with still a little bit of room for development. The wine is drinking nicely now, but will keep for some decades more.

  • A vibrant nose of somewhat aged dark cherry character, dusty wood notes, meat, menthol lift, salt liquorice and slight chocolate.
Medium bodied dark cherry to bright raspberry palate with pretty tannic grip and refreshing acidity. Cooling menthol breeze, liquorice and graphite. Lengthy.
Very nice stuff in a pleasently dry style. Has plenty of years left though many might find it too mature already.

  • I was a tad worried about this bottle as a friend with way more knowledge of Italian wines had told me not to expect much. Of course, this was after I'd sourced it as a birthyear gift for a friend... We popped and poured out tiny sips to see what was going on... Well, bongiorno, someone was still alive, if a tad shy and grumpy about being woken up. We both looked at each other in wonder, there was a spike of sweet fruit there that promised more, so we let the bottle sit open for about 90 minutes while I finished cooking the roast duck. With the food plated, we poured and swirled and sniffed in anticipation. Had it gotten better? Did it drop off the cliff? The wine was super light, both in color and density, with classic older Nebbiolo profiles of flowery roses, some tar, and earthy red fruits, all on an extremely light frame (almost watery). This still had some nice acidity to it, and held up nicely to the roast duck. Lovely, in a very elegant and ethereal manner of speaking, with a rather mid-length finish.
