Screwcap. Faded, tired nose of prune, blackberry, and dry leaves. Palate shows a watery mouthfeel, with faded tannin and dry bitterness. Flavours of prune, blackberry, and bay leaf, with a hint of roast beef. OK to begin with, but there are some unpleasant aged characters creeping in, and it gets really unpleasant and vinegared an hour or so after opening. Possibly a faulty bottle.

Popped and poured. Typical Coonawarra nose of mint and eucalypt. It took a while for the wine to open up and show itself. Still plenty of blackcurrant, dark chocolate, and vanilla on the palate that finishes long and flavoursome. Good balance of fruit, acid and tannin. Has come together quite well. Very enjoyable now with a long decant but will last at least another 10 years in good cellaring conditions. No rush on this one.

(GoodFriday@theChans) [vertical w 1999] light, effortless cassis, red fruit, graphite, coffee grounds, tobacco, cedar shavings, spices and sweet dark fruit. Good acid structure, lively with soft tannins, and yet more cassis, sweet soft silk, and white pepper. Really open, at peak. Brighter than its 99 sibling, lacking its power, certainly more expressive but tad simpler. Excellent!
