  • shared this with uncle marty, aunt betty, vicki, leslie and pat at benito's trattoria in chester, new jersey. served with dessert course. i had been holding on to this bottle to share with uncle marty in honor of dr. lamm. unfortunately, the proper occasion never arose until now. at this point, the wine was oxidized to the extent that fruit characteristics were signiicantly masked. color was golden. the only consolation was a hint of honey in an otherwise dry wine. i don't believe my storage conditions were hurtful to the wine. so, a word of caution to members holding onto this wine; unless you enjoy your white wine maderized, plan to make salad dressing.

  • Redolent of ripe apricots and tulips, but with good minerality and even earthiness, this was an unexpectedly satisfying Gruener. I was in general surprised by the level of ripeness in this-it almost reminded me of a dry Vouvray (not a bad thing, I guess.) I'm still used to associating Gruener with the super tart, zingy stuff I've quaffed in inordinate quantities in the Heuriger around Vienna, usually "aufg'spritzt" with soda water. Really enjoyed this, and will look for more!

  • Very crisp funny nose. The taste is a little thin and slightly off. Wonder if this will be better later after its open for awhile.

  • Hirsch was founded in 1878 and has a very good reputation. The winery is run by Josef Hirsch and his son Johannes. They own 20 hectares of vineyards in the Kamptal region of Austria. 60% planted to GruVe and 40% to Riesling. Excellent vineyard practices like the use of natural fertilizers (Keith Scott would be interested to learn they use composted goat muck), densely planted vines (5,000 vines per hectare), strict canopy management, hand picking and a vigorous selection (up to 4 passes through the vineyard) result in top quality wines. Using top vineyard sites and matching the grape to the soil also helps. The Lamm vineyard and its loess soils are a good match for GruVe and the grapes used for this wine come from old vines.

Tasted from magnum. Only 900 cases were made of this wine. Light yellow color. It is ripe with concentrated notes of peach, creamy fruit, spice and some minerality. It has a compact structure and was aged in stainless steel to preserve its fresh and lively character which show through. Very nice full lush finish. Although this wine was outstanding now, you can feel comfortable holding it for another 5+ years (especially if it is in magnum) 91 points.
