  • Tremendously successful vintage chez Dujac, perfectly ripe with ever light hotness to make it showy. Classic whole cluster, spicy red and cherry fruit, sustained acidity and lightly woody. Echezeaux at grand cru performance. 94-95

  • Dinner at Ming San's (Ming San's): A wonderful wine, just about my favourite in the 1998 Ech / GE flight. The nose was a nice reflection of both maker and terroir, with the shades of whole-cluster stems mixed in with spice and earth and then a gentle perfume of matured cherries and berry fruit. Very alluring indeed. The palate was very complete for an Echezeaux - served blind, I thought it was either a Dujac Clos St Denis or perhaps a CdlR. There was just such a flawless sense of balance and integration in the wine, so that it came across as a beautifully stylish, almost seductive mouthful of pure cherry and berry flavours, with a beautiful sur-mature sweetness to them. On the midpalate and beyond, waft after waft of earth and spice, herbs and flowers, all filled the mouth into a long, full finish. Not the most powerful expression of the vineyard perhaps, but this was a really beautiful wine. It was so nicely put together that it seemed almost easygoing and gulpable, but pay a little attention and it quickly becomes obvious that there is tons going on here. Still so alive too, with lots of juicy acidity chasing up the tail - this was a world away from the rusticity that one sometimes gets with Echezeaux or, indeed, with lesser-1998 Burgundies. Bravo!

  • BORGOGNA 2015; 2/22/2015-3/22/2015: Tasting at the domaine.
