  • NSG night at Duomo: Stark difference from the 1st flight in terms of age with a 20-30 year disparity. Bouquet threw off aromatic spices, manuka honey, orange peel, dried flowers and plums. Palate threw forth grilled mushrooms, ripe cherries, smoke with earthy undertones and minerality. Felt that the fruit was drying out here, tannins pretty grippy and seems like it is overtaking the fruit. We decided that because the wine was still pretty tight, we would give it a quick decant but I think all that did was to accentuate the tannic edge of the wine.

  • Wine Dinner: Mugneret Gibourg Vertical (Zazie's, San Francisco): Aromatic, floral spices, elegant, aromatic; palate is light bodied, mature red fruits, some savory notes, high acidity, lovely balance; medium-plus finish. Really lovely. 92-93
On retaste the aromatics had faded but the palate may have fleshed out a bit. 92.

  • Nice Burgundy! Still some life left in it.

  • Decanted off of its sediment. Proper aged burg color, but with a clear edge.

Nose was good from the get go, with dark red fruit, but more dominated by a woodsy tertiary note, and a bit of mustiness, which blew off. It continued to improve through the night.

The palate, on the other hand, started off tight, with a dominant cough syrup flavor. That too subsided, and though the wine maintains a Nuits-iron core, it has an elegance that says Vosne.

This was outstanding, and the reason we age burgs. I opened my last bottle six or eight years ago. That was quite hard-edged. This was much better, resolved, and really drinking well. It was quite reasonably priced back in the day. Wish I had more than one bottle remaining. Great today, but I don’t think there’s any hurry to drink up.

As with most great bottles, the last sip was the best.

  • Starts out with some leather and iron that quickly turns into fragrant red berries with a fully resolved palate. Escpecially the taste is good. Mature and ready to drink now. Much better than previous bottle 2-3 years ago.

Burgundy-Report

(Mugneret Dr Georges Nuits St.Georges Les Chaignots) Medium ruby red, still cherry red at the rim. The nose has reticent but very pure cherry. Gorgeously smooth palate with a very sneaky, creamy red fruit length. The acidity is fine and the tannins are first class. Not many words to describe a super Nuits - but I made another order!
