  • Cork was very suspect, soft and squishy and smelled like balsamic vinegar but the juice in the bottle was actually quite solid. Nose is very Burgundy; earthy, almost manure-y, baking spices, wet leaves, a hint of berry fruit (blackberry?) in the background. The palate is great; medium body, ripe cherries, cranberries, river stones, a vague violet note. Good balance, electric minerality, long finish. It is a bit sweeter and darker than you might expect from Volnay but not at all cloying or heavy. Really good stuff despite the seeping cork. Better-stored bottles might need more time or a good decant....

  • Very sweet, almost a candied surmaturite, clean berry fruit, decent length. Very good, but not what I am looking for in Burgundy.

  • Pleasant, and the oak (much too prominent on release) has integrated almost completely. A hint of green/tobacco on the nose, and a tiny bit stemmy but plenty of ripe fruit flavors as well make this relatively balanced, but perhaps a bit too dense (almost Bordeaux-like). Sweet fruited finish....Overall very pleasant wine, but not a huge amount of complexity.

  • This is not the usual Burg. The heat of the vintage certainly showed in the wine, though not in a bad way. Voluptious and sexy, with strong nose of blueberries and ripe plums, well integrated tannins, oak and earthiness. Nice complexity and flavours. Enjoyable now and well made. Just not the typical Burgundian - may even pass off as a Rhone! Well, it was delicious and certainly worked for me. But purists, better look elsewhere.

  • Volnay Elegance (The Universal @ Duxton): Started out leafy and stemy. Tobacco leaves, sausages, airy roses and some cigarette ash. Interestingly, I smelt hot margarine too. Relatively sweet with spome ripe black berries. A bit simple but it did open up considerably more during the last few drops so maybe it needed some time. A pity I drank too quickly.
