8% ABV. Amber gold. Lemon, apricot, lemon peel, orange peel, Earl Grey tea, honey, toffee, caramel, beeswax, honey, earth, and more Earl Grey tea, and more earth, with good acidity, and very good length of the lightly smoky finish. Light botrytis character. Oily texture. Earthier than most. This may sound awkward, but the earthiness is quite intriguing. Very caramelly after being open for a week. Drink or hold.

The bottle was in good condition. The wine was medium gold in colour and offered apricot, honey, beeswax and ethereal notes on the nose. On the palate the wine showed canned apricot, cane sugar, honey, beeswax, green tea, black tea leave and ethereal notes, with lively acidity and very good length. The wine was slightly sugary at first, but pulled itself together nicely after a few minutes and became integrated and well-balanced. A very good Spätlese.

German Tasting with Scott Larsen of Maverick Wine Company (Gibby's Wine Den, Geneva, IL): Deep golden straw color. Aromas of butterscotch, pear and petrol. Medium-bodied, with a rich texture and flavors of tropical fruit, pineapple and sweet tea. More advanced than I would have expected; perhaps not a pristine bottle. $42.95.
