  • Opened to celebrate the life of Nelson Mandela. Less evolved than that bottle we opened three months ago; where that one was obviously at peak, and gloriously so, on first pour, this one would have benefited from a two hour decant. Old school, masculine style with big black cherry fruit that's more savory than sweet, pencil shavings, blood, chocolate and, toward the very last, mint. Ample tannins, will hold or continue to improve for years.

  • There could be no better time in the life of this wine to open a bottle. It's lusciously middle-aged: secondary development is delivering complex, leathery notes in a very traditional, Bordeauxish framework, and yet the cab sauv fruit is base is warmly sweet and identifiable. This bottle is right now doing what South Africa does best, perfectly straddling the median beween old and new worlds.
