Devin's Surprise Birthday Party (Q4 - Vancouver, BC): This was quite advanced. Salty butterscotch and oxidized red apples. The palate was a tad fresher than the nose kicking off some salty lemon juice, lime zest, and oak spice, but with underlying caramel beneath it all. Too bad. NR

Burgundy 2012 Day 4: Dinner with Fabrice & Friends (Fabrice Amiot's, Santenay): From a magnum, this was a pretty good wine that is just entering its drinking window. I liked the nose here, with its notes of honeyed musk and flowers, some sweet apples and lemon aromas and a nice touch of chalk in the background. There was a quiet sense of itensity on that bouquet. The palate was nice too, showing a soft mellowed roundness wed to fresh 2004 acidity that gave its flavours of sweet apples, pears and honey a nice purity to them. A good long finish rounded the wine off, with a touch of bittersweet lemon zest and green almonds mingling amidst some warm spice. Pretty good, and about the right time to start drinking, at least in a magnum format. It should be even better from a 750ml with a smidgen of more maturity.

Opened and served right away. Light golden yellow in colour. Beautiful nose of white flowers, yellow and citrus fruits with a good dose of toasty oak and hints of salinity. The oak treatment is quite obvious but it's not overbearing. There's good weight in the mouth with rich and intense flavours with a persistent and minerally finish. Palate has enough acidity to keep the rich and weighty mouthfeel still feeling fresh. After my last bottle was premoxed I was worried but this bottle is drinking beautifully and showing as I would expect it to. Ill drink my remaining bottles over the next 2-3 years. Excellent.

(Amiot Guy Chassagne-Montrachet Les Vergers) Medium-pale yellow. The nose is broad and deep, a faint backgound of cream and bread, but no overt oak. Lovely intense and complex palate of rippling acidity and citrussy fruit - lovely extension of width on the mid-palate before slowly dying into the finish. Super and from such a youngster - this is a definite re-buy!
