  • TN: Van Volxem Wiltinger Gottesfuss Riesling Alte Reben (Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer), AP 12 05, Euros 28.80/750 ml, Weinhaus Porn, Bernkastel, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany.

Nice cork. Highly refractive amber-gold, with glass-coating body; throws orange-flower scents into the air as it's opened.

Very deep nose, starting with some petrol that is soon imperceptible, and moving on to pear, funky mango, and a sort of frizzante orange note. With more air it blossoms into a minty terpene garden.

Not bone-dry, but very balanced and singing in perfect-pitch harmony, with plenty of skin tang and juicy acidity, orange, tangerine, and lime peel and white tannins. Caressing mouthfeel. Great length and density on the finish. Evident old-vines integration from this very special ultra-steep 125 year-old pre-phylloxera vineyard, one of the few Saar Erste Lagen that are actually on the river. Drink now.

Wonderful savory match for the Japanese pork, chicken, and seafood dishes we were eating at Sakai, Troy, OH.

This bottling was the one that made a believer out of many critics, showing the very top of Roman Niewodniczansky's hard work and passion. Bravo! (93 pts.)

48 hours in, nose includes rosewater, funk, redcurrant, wet stones, and a hint of medicinal chlorine, with good palate energy, juiciness, and a neat smoked-walnut finish. Harmony and integration still there. This gives me hope for further development in cellar for a few years. Give it another point, perhaps, based on this. A truly unique profile for a Saar Rielsing.
