  • Friday Night Double Blind Tasting $50+ (Bin 75 Alpharetta, GA): Aged chocolate core of crimson with lar orange red rim; saddle leather on the nose, fennel seed, sour cherry, balsamic, orange zest, tobacco; savory palate, good mid palate weight, late dry tannins, touch of cherry liqueur, on the higher end of the ripeness scale, cedar; very nice and in a good spot; called Riserva level Barolo.

  • Fontanafredda 160th Anniversary Vertical Collection 1982–2010 (Riga, Latvia): 🏅 Rating 89/100 (3,9⭐)

    Fontanafredda 160th Anniversary Collection.

Vanilla dominant. Very straightforward and one dimensional wine. Tannins are present and granular. Overall impression of a hot dry year with overripe fruits. It has Barolo typicity into it, but the wine is just not great.

Barolo Riserva is produced only from estate owned vineyards, mostly from Serralunga d'Alba.

  • My wine of the night at a tasting of 16 wines contributed by 9 serious wine drinkers to enjoy together. Hugely structured by tannin and acidity, but with the beginnings of a more rounded and integrated taste. Also, a rich black cherry fruit and more caressing texture are starting to poke through the curtain of tannin. Overall, a darkly colored and more concentrated and powerful Barolo, that merits continued storage for 10 more years and could easily be enjoyed for 20 more years.

  • Dark, somewhat translucent cherry red color. A little bit restrained nose with light aromas of wizened red cherries, some sweeter strawberry tones, a little bit of plummy fruit, light oaky tones of toasted wood and mocha and a sweet, lifted hint of VA. The wine is juicy, ripe and medium-to-moderately full-bodied on the palate with succulent flavors of fresh dark berries, some sweet black cherries, a little bit of sweet oak spice, light pipe tobacco tones and a hint of balsamic VA. Overall the wine is quite sweet-toned and exhibiting some warm vintage character, but still coming across as pretty structured with the moderately high acidity and quite ample and grippy tannins. The finish is moderately tannic and grippy with rich, sweet-toned flavors of ripe dark berries, some black cherry tones, a little bit of succulent blackberry character, light plummy tones, a hint of earthy spice and a touch of sour cherry bitterness.

A nice, balanced and harmonious Barolo with quite a bit of life and structure left. Even at 15 years of age the wine shows surprisingly little sense of evolution, coming across as surprisingly young and vibrant with no noticeable tertiary character. Most likely the wine is never going to lose its ripe, sweet-toned fruit character, but the oakier tones still linger around and perhaps some further cellaring might help them to integrate further with the fruit. Overall this feels like a well-made, tasty and balanced Barolo that is quite accessible right now despite its rather firm structure and although drinking very nicely now, the wine will most likely to continue to develop for years more. No hurry whatsoever with this wine.

  • Very nice but a little hot, a little VA, vintage winding down maybe and some muted fruit. The 1998 la villa fontanafredda was much better. Still, good alongside tagliatelle with mushroom-beef ragu
