  • Pale lemon yellow color. Somewhat reticent, nuanced nose with very autolytic aromas of toasted bred, some delicate nuttiness and a hint of toffee. The wine is dry and equally autolytic on the palate with complex flavors of roasted walnuts, biscuits warm from the oven, bruised apple, some creaminess, a little bit of ripe citrus fruits, a hint of sweet baking spices and a touch of sweet baked apple. Tine has quite a bit of weight and power, emphasized in part by the rather moderate acidity and rather light and gentle - yet persistent - mousse. The finish is quite long and a bit earthy with quite pronounced chalky minerality and flavors of ripe citrus fruits, a little bit of herbal greenness and autolytic complexity of roasted nuts, toasted bread and a little bit of yeast.

This wine really took me by surprise, as I wasn't looking for such an autolytic powerhouse. There's a lot of autolytic complexity here - up to the point of it dominating over the fruit - making the wine feel really savory, complex and muscular. However, structure-wise the wine isn't as impressive, so most likely there's no point cellaring the wine for a long time. There's no hurry though - most likely this will keep for at least 15-20 years after the vintage. There's just no real point in aging the wine much further, seeing how autolytic it is now! Wonderful stuff, but most likely showing very little development potential.

  • Visit to Mailly Champagne (Mailly, France): Nose of ripe apple and some apple compote. Palate of yellow apple, noticeable minerality, and good acidity. Rather young, 89(+) p.
